Food tray sealing fault detection using hyperspectral imaging and PCANet

2020

Abstract Food trays are very common in shops and supermarkets. Fresh food packaged in trays must be correctly sealed to protect the internal atmosphere and avoid contamination or deterioration. Due to the speed of production, it is not possible to have human quality inspection. Thus, automatic fault detection is a must to reach high production volume. This work describes a deep neural network based on Principal Component Analysis Network (PCANet) for food tray sealing fault detection. The input data come from hyperspectral cameras, showing more characteristics than regular industrial cameras or the human eye as they capture the spectral properties for each pixel. The proposed classification…

Automatic Acoustic Target Detecting and Tracking on the Azimuth Recording Diagram with Image Processing Methods

2019

International audience; Passive acoustic target detection has been a hot research topic for a few decades. Azimuth recording diagram is one of the most promising techniques to estimate the arrival direction of the interested signal by visualizing the sound wave information. However, this method is challenged by the random ambient noise, resulting in low reliability and short effective distance. This paper presents a real-time postprocessing framework for passive acoustic target detection modalities by using a sonar array, in which image processing methods are used to automate the target detecting and tracking on the azimuth recording diagram. The simulation results demonstrate that the prop…

Candida blood stream infections observed between 2011 and 2016 in a large Italian University Hospital: A time-based retrospective analysis on epidemi…

2019

Candida bloodstream infection (BSI) represents a growing infective problem frequently associated to biofilm production due to the utilization of intravascular devices. Candida species distribution (n = 612 strains), their biofilm production and hospital antifungal drug consumption were evaluated in different wards of a tertiary care academic hospital in Italy during the years 2011–2016. In the considered time window, an increasing number of Candida BSI (p = 0.005) and of biofilm producing strains were observed (p<0.0001). Although C. albicans was the species more frequently isolated in BSI with a major biofilm production, an increased involvement of non-albicans species was reported, partic…

Dynamics and predicted drug response of a gene network linking dedifferentiation with β-catenin dysfunction in hepatocellular carcinoma

2019

Background & Aims Alterations of individual genes variably affect the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Thus, we aimed to characterize the function of tumor-promoting genes in the context of gene regulatory networks (GRNs). Methods Using data from The Cancer Genome Atlas, from the LIRI-JP (Liver Cancer – RIKEN, JP project), and from our transcriptomic, transfection and mouse transgenic experiments, we identify a GRN which functionally links LIN28B-dependent dedifferentiation with dysfunction of β-catenin (CTNNB1). We further generated and validated a quantitative mathematical model of the GRN using human cell lines and in vivo expression data. Results We found that LIN28B and C…

The transcriptome of mouse central nervous system myelin

2016

AbstractRapid nerve conduction in the CNS is facilitated by insulation of axons with myelin, a specialized oligodendroglial compartment distant from the cell body. Myelin is turned over and adapted throughout life; however, the molecular and cellular basis of myelin dynamics remains elusive. Here we performed a comprehensive transcriptome analysis (RNA-seq) of myelin biochemically purified from mouse brains at various ages and find a surprisingly large pool of transcripts enriched in myelin. Further computational analysis showed that the myelin transcriptome is closely related to the myelin proteome but clearly distinct from the transcriptomes of oligodendrocytes and brain tissues, suggesti…

Principal components analysis: theory and application to gene expression data analysis

2018

Advances in computational power have enabled research to generate significant amounts of data related to complex biological problems. Consequently, applying appropriate data analysis techniques has become paramount to tackle this complexity. However, theoretical understanding of statistical methods is necessary to ensure that the correct method is used and that sound inferences are made based on the analysis. In this article, we elaborate on the theory behind principal components analysis (PCA), which has become a favoured multivariate statistical tool in the field of omics-data analysis. We discuss the necessary prerequisites and steps to produce statistically valid results and provide gui…

Chemometric Study on Alkaline Pre-treatments of Wood Chips Prior to Pulping

2016

Alkaline pre-treatments were performed for the production of organics-containing effluents from silver/white birch (Betula pendula/pubescens) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) chips prior to chemical pulping. Pre-treatment conditions were varied with respect to time (from 30 min to 120 min), temperature (130 °C and 150 °C), and alkali charge (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8% of NaOH on oven-dried wood). The analytical data (total content, weight average molar mass, and molar mass distribution) on dissolved lignin were subjected to principal component analysis to examine the relationship between molar mass and molar mass distributions in lignin removed from different wood species under varying alkaline…

Maternal DNA lineages at the gate of Europe in the 10th century AD

2018

Given the paucity of archaeogenetic data available for medieval European populations in comparison to other historical periods, the genetic landscape of this age appears as a puzzle of dispersed, small, known pieces. In particular, Southeastern Europe has been scarcely investigated to date. In this paper, we report the study of mitochondrial DNA in 10th century AD human samples from Capidava necropolis, located in Dobruja (Southeastern Romania, Southeastern Europe). This geographical region is particularly interesting because of the extensive population flux following diverse migration routes, and the complex interactions between distinct population groups during the medieval period. We suc…

Preselection statistics and Random Forest classification identify population informative single nucleotide polymorphisms in cosmopolitan and autochth…

2018

Commercial single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays have been recently developed for several species and can be used to identify informative markers to differentiate breeds or populations for several downstream applications. To identify the most discriminating genetic markers among thousands of genotyped SNPs, a few statistical approaches have been proposed. In this work, we compared several methods of SNPs preselection (Delta, F st and principal component analyses (PCA)) in addition to Random Forest classifications to analyse SNP data from six dairy cattle breeds, including cosmopolitan (Holstein, Brown and Simmental) and autochthonous Italian breeds raised in two different regions and …

Motivators, barriers and strategies of weight management: A cross-sectional study among Finnish adults.

2018

Abstract Background Weight management (WM) is an ongoing global challenge. The purpose of this study was to analyze motivators, barriers, and strategies of WM among Finnish adults. Methods Data were collected in the ‘KULUMA’ (Consumers at the Weight Management Market) project among 667 community-dwelling adults in Eastern and Central Finland (Kuopio and Jyvaskyla). The self-reported questionnaire collected background information and responses to motivators, barriers, and strategy items. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to extract components of motivators, barriers, and strategies of WM, along with K-means clustering to categorize the participants. Results About 55% of the respond…
