Funerary practices or food delicatessen? Human remains with anthropic marks from the Western Mediterranean Mesolithic

2017

Abstract The identification of unarticulated human remains with anthropic marks in archaeological contexts normally involves solving two issues: a general one associated with the analysis and description of the anthropic manipulation marks, and another with regard to the interpretation of their purpose. In this paper we present new evidence of anthropophagic behaviour amongst hunter-gatherer groups of the Mediterranean Mesolithic. A total of 30 human remains with anthropic manipulation marks have been found in the Mesolithic layers of Coves de Santa Maira (Castell de Castells, Alicante, Spain), dating from ca. 10.2–9 cal ky BP. We describe the different marks identified on both human and fa…

Discrete-lattice theory for Frenkel-defect aggregation in irradiated ionic solids

1998

Institut fu ¨r Physikalische und Theoretische Chemie, Technische Universitat Braunschweig, D-38106 Braunschweig, Germany~Received 11 September 1997; revised manuscript received 6 April 1998!A microscopic theory of diffusion-controlled aggregation of radiation Frenkel defects—called in ionic solidsH and F centers—is presented. This is based on a discrete-lattice formalism for the single defect densities~concentrations! and the coupled joint densities of similar and dissimilar defects treated in terms of a modifiedKirkwood superposition approximation. The kinetics of defect aggregation is studied in detail; the cooperativecharacter of this process for both types of complementary defects is sho…

Mode superposition methods in dynamic analysis of classically and non-classically damped linear systems

1986

Mode-superposition analysis is an efficient tool for the evaluation of the response of linear systems subjected to dynamic agencies. Two well-known mode-superposition methods are available in the literature, the mode-displacement method and the mode-acceleration method. Within this frame a method is proposed called a dynamic correction method which evaluates the structural response as the sum of a pseudostatic response, which is the particular solution of the differential equations, and a dynamic correction evaluated using a reduced number of natural modes. The greater accuracy of the proposed method with respect to the other methods is evidenced through extensive numerical tests, for class…

Development of a module of stacks of air-breathing microbial fuel cells to light-up a strip of LEDs

2018

Abstract This work focuses on scaling-up of the microbial fuel cells technology according to the principle of miniaturization and multiplication. Seven stacks of 16 mini-MFCs (electrodic area of 0.866 cm2) were built up leading to a big module of 112 MFCs. The electrical connection among the MFCs in the stacks and among the stacks into the modules was optimized in order to implement this technology. Results show that 1 MFC generates 1.22 mW while the optimization of the electric connection in order to achieve the maximum power results in 6.62 mW compared to the theoretical 182 mW, indicating the existence of large energy losses in the system. However, to light a LED there is not a threshold…

La retirada de Estados Unidos del Plan de Acción Integral Conjunto y la reimposición de sanciones a Irán: aspectos jurídicos y políticos

2019

This paper examines some issues raised by the United States withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) related to Iran’s nuclear program. The JCPOA is a nonbinding document, there has been some debate about the effect of the subsequent U.N. Security Council resolution endorsing the document on its legal status and on the US faculty of unilaterally withdrawing from the plan of action. Iran brought a case before the International Court of Justice questioning the legality of the reintroduction of U.S sanctions, the Court could eventually address the issue in later phases. This paper concludes that U.S withdrawal is legal from an international law perspective. Security Counc…

Price-Time Priority and Pro Rata Matching in an Order Book Model of Financial Markets

2011

Using our recently introduced order book model of financial markets we analyzed two different matching principles for order allocation — price-time priority and pro rata matching. Price-time priority uses the submission timestamp which prioritizes orders in the book with the same price. The order which was entered earliest at a given price limit gets executed first. Pro rata matching is used for products with low intraday volatility of best bid and best ask price. Pro rata matching ensures constant access for orders of all sizes. We demonstrate how a multiagent-based model of financial market can be used to study microscopic aspects of order books.

Is ex‐ante ex‐post analysis irrelevant to Keynes's theory of employment?

2004

Ex‐ante ex‐post analysis has become a standard tool in macroeconomics. Yet Keynes dismissed it. We argue that Keynes's dismissal of ex‐ante ex‐post analysis is not an oddity but an indication of the originality of his theory of employment compared to standard macroeconomics. First, the principle of effective demand does not amount to a process that determines employment and income at the point of intersection of the traditionally defined ex ante supply and demand functions. Second, the finance motive allowed Keynes to confirm the identity of aggregate supply and demand already asserted in The General Theory. This latter conclusion is puzzling, however, since the principle of effective deman…
