Photon emission in neutral current interactions with nucleons and nuclei

We report on our study of photon emission induced by Enu ~ 1 GeV (anti)neutrino neutral current interactions with nucleons and nuclei. This process is an important background for nu_e appearance oscillation experiments. At the relevant energies, the reaction is dominated by the excitation of the Delta (1232) resonance but there are also non-resonant contributions that, close to threshold, are fully determined by the effective chiral Lagrangian of strong interactions. We have obtained differential and integrated cross section for the (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering and compare them with previous results. Critical point Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation

We study Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation with the renormalisation group improved potential in the case when loop corrections generate a feature similar to an inflection point. Assuming that there is a threshold correction for the Higgs quartic coupling $\lambda$ and the top Yukawa coupling $y_t$, we scan the three-dimensional parameter space formed by the two jumps and the non-minimal coupling $\xi$. The spectral index $n_s$ can take any value in the observationally allowed range. The lower limit for the running is $\alpha_s>-3.5\times10^{-3}$, and $\alpha_s$ can be as large as the observational upper limit. Running of the running is small. Neutral current photon emission reactions with nucleons and nuclei are studied. These processes are important backgrounds for nu_mu to nu_e (bar(nu)_mu to bar(nu)_e) appearance oscillation experiments where electromagnetic showers instigated by electrons (positrons) and photons are not distinguishable. s-wave pion-nucleus optical potential

We calculate the s-wave part of the pion-nucleus optical potential using a unitarized chiral approach that has been previously used to simultaneously describe pionic hydrogen and deuterium data as well as low energy pi N scattering in the vacuum. This energy dependent model allows for additional isoscalar parts in the potential from multiple rescattering. We consider Pauli blocking and pion polarization in an asymmetric nuclear matter environment. Also, higher order corrections of the pi N amplitude are included. The model can accommodate the repulsion required by phenomenological fits, though the theoretical uncertainties are bigger than previously thought. At the same time, we also find a…

Inclusive quasielastic neutrino reactions inC12andO16at intermediate energies

Inclusive quasielastic neutrino (antineutrino) reactions on [sup 12]C and [sup 16]O at intermediate energies (50[lt][ital E][lt]400 MeV) are studied to investigate the effects of the nuclear medium on the total cross section and the energy spectrum of the outgoing leptons. The calculations are done in the local density approximation and various nuclear effects like Pauli blocking, Fermi motion, and strong-interaction renormalizations due to the presence of nucleons are taken into account. The corrections due to Coulomb effects are included which have been hitherto neglected in inclusive reactions. Acute Type Refinements of Tetrahedral Partitions of Polyhedral Domains

We present a new technique to perform refinements on acute type tetrahedral partitions of a polyhedral domain, provided that the center of the circumscribed sphere around each tetrahedron belongs to the tetrahedron. The resulting family of partitions is of acute type; thus, all the tetrahedra satisfy the maximum angle condition. Both these properties are highly desirable in finite element analysis.

A physical approach to the connection between fractal geometry and fractional calculus

Our goal is to prove the existence of a connection between fractal geometries and fractional calculus. We show that such a connection exists and has to be sought in the physical origins of the power laws ruling the evolution of most of the natural phenomena, and that are the characteristic feature of fractional differential operators. We show, with the aid of a relevant example, that a power law comes up every time we deal with physical phenomena occurring on a underlying fractal geometry. The order of the power law depends on the anomalous dimension of the geometry, and on the mathematical model used to describe the physics. Semipredictable dynamical systems

A new class of deterministic dynamical systems, termed semipredictable dynamical systems, is presented. The spatiotemporal evolution of these systems have both predictable and unpredictable traits, as found in natural complex systems. We prove a general result: The dynamics of any deterministic nonlinear cellular automaton (CA) with $p$ possible dynamical states can be decomposed at each instant of time in a superposition of $N$ layers involving $p_{0}$, $p_{1}$,... $p_{N-1}$ dynamical states each, where the $p_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$, $k \in [0, N-1]$ are divisors of $p$. On the numerical solution of axisymmetric domain optimization problems by dual finite element method

Shape optimization of an axisymmetric three-dimensional domain with an elliptic boundary value state problem is solved. Since the cost functional is given in terms of the cogradient of the solution, a dual finite element method based on the minimum of complementary energy principle is used. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
