The forager's dilemma: food sharing and food defense as risk-sensitive foraging options.
2003
Although many variants of the hawk-dove game predict the frequency at which group foraging animals should compete aggressively, none of them can explain why a large number of group foraging animals share food clumps without any overt aggression. One reason for this shortcoming is that hawk-dove games typically consider only a single contest, while most group foraging situations involve opponents that interact repeatedly over discovered food clumps. The present iterated hawk-dove game predicts that in situations that are analogous to a prisoner's dilemma, animals should share the resources without aggression, provided that the number of simultaneously available food clumps is sufficiently la…
Las razones para perdonar. Concepciones populares o teorías implícitas
2007
Data gathered on adolescents and adults from general population, living in Buenos Aires City and its suburban area, as well as on prison inmates and theology students (N: 1715) are presented. Participants answered an open question: Is important for you to be able to forgive? Yes. No. Why? Subjects mostly admit that to forgive is important for them. For theology students forgiveness is a central theme of Christian thinking. A religious dimension is also present among prison inmates who are the only group that relates to forgive with loving someone. For younger people forgiveness allows to have a second chance after making something wrong and facilitates feelings of inner peace. Men show a t…
Fragilità e situazioni carcerarie tra circuiti, sezioni protette e diritti negati
2023
A look at the functions of the prison through the lens of fragility allows us to highlight the limits of the current penitentiary system, inviting the interpreter to reflect on possible solutions to contain its known neg…
Crescere in IPM.
Prisoner's dilemma in an RNA virus
1999
The evolution of competitive interactions among viruses1 was studied in the RNA phage φ6 at high and low multiplicities of infection (that is, at high and low ratios of infecting phage to host cells). At high multiplicities, many phage infect and reproduce in the same host cell, whereas at low multiplicities the viruses reproduce mainly as clones. An unexpected result of this study1 was that phage grown at high rates of co-infection increased in fitness initially, but then evolved lowered fitness. Here we show that the fitness of the high-multiplicity phage relative to their ancestors generates a pay-off matrix conforming to the prisoner's dilemma strategy of game theory2,3. In this strateg…
Health related quality of life and physical activity in prison: a multicenter observational study in Italy.
2017
Background Inmates have a poorer health status than the general population. The physical activity is well know that improve the wellness of the people. This multicentric cross-sectional study aimed to assess the relationship between Quality of Life (QoL) and physical activity levels among Italian prisoners. Methods Inmates from eight prisons compiled a questionnaire. The Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) was used to measure inmates' weekly physical activity levels (MATwk). Their QoL was measured using two components of Short Form with 12 items (SF12): MCS (mental score) and PCS (physical score). Results A total of 636 questionnaires were compiled. High level of MET was significantly (P <…
Pastāvošā stāvokļa analīze Eirāzijas cietuma kapelānu profesionālo vajadzību noteikšanai
2020
Resocialisation program “Miriam” as a Christian subculture group in female prison
2016
The paper aims to study the similarities and differences between small or informal groups in prison subculture and re-socialization program “Miriam”, which is created as a different cultural space in female prison. The dominating norms in the small groups in prison subculture the values, artefact, leader, table culture, and a sense of space and time strengthens the convicted person's criminal identity. Under the program “Miriam”, which also has elements of prisoner small group subculture, women are offered to learn about different cultural and artistic values together with fundamental Christianity values by program leaders – well-known people from Art and Culture area. With this kind of app…
Intellectual Life and Literature at Solovki 1923-1930: The Paris of the Northern Concentration Camps
2018
In 1923, the Soviet state decided to create a prison camp on the Solovki archipelago, the site of a former monastery. It became the laboratory of the Gulag, where the techniques of labour-camp exploitation were developed. Prisoners died by the hundreds both within the walls of the monastery and in the frozen forests beyond. Yet the camp's activities in cultural re-education were surprisingly extensive. With the connivance of part of the administration, Solovki became a unique cultural citadel, where the values of a dying intelligentsia were reflected in the works and words of the prisoners, who numbered not only poets and actors but also figures such as the revered Russian scholar Dmitrii L…
