Regional and experiential differences in surgeon preference for the treatment of cervical facet injuries: a case study survey with the AO Spine Cervi…
2021
Abstract Purpose The management of cervical facet dislocation injuries remains controversial. The main purpose of this investigation was to identify whether a surgeon’s geographic location or years in practice influences their preferred management of traumatic cervical facet dislocation injuries. Methods A survey was sent to 272 AO Spine members across all geographic regions and with a variety of practice experience. The survey included clinical case scenarios of cervical facet dislocation injuries and asked responders to select preferences among various diagnostic and management options. Results A total of 189 complete responses were received. Over 50% of responding surgeons in each region…
Channel Tracking Guidewire and Technique for Retrograde Approach
2020
Evaluation of the collateral circulation is critical for determining the feasibility of the retrograde approach. When assessing collateral channels it is of paramount importance to take time and review the previous angiogram carefully, for multiple potential collateral pathways, as the predominant collateral may change over time prior to the procedure. Careful review of collaterals prior to the procedure can reduce contrast and radiation dose as well as the duration of the procedure.Retrograde access to the distal vessel can be achieved via septal collaterals, epicardial collaterals (atrial channel), or (patent or occluded) coronary bypass grafts. Generally septals are used more often 65–70…
Retention of aroma compounds in starch matrices: competitions between aroma compounds toward amylose and amylopectin
2002
International audience; The retention of three aroma compounds-isoamyl acetate, ethyl hexanoate, and linalool--from starch-containing model food matrices was measured by headspace analysis, under equilibrium conditions. We studied systems containing standard or waxy corn starch with one or two aroma compounds. The three studied aroma compounds interact differently: ethyl hexanoate and linalool form complexes with amylose, and isoamyl acetate cannot. However, in systems containing one aroma compound, we observed with both starches a significant retention of the three molecules. These results indicate that amylopectin could play a role in the retention of aroma. In systems containing two arom…
The Uniqueness of Teaching and Learning Chemistry
2009
Unfortunately, the current perception of Chemistry held by many students and the general public alike appears to be in stark contrast to its true nature. Although chemistry is ubiquitous in all aspects of our daily lives it continues to be perceived as highly theoretical and of little relevance. A clearer understanding of the fundamental Nature of Chemistry will be needed if students are to recognize its true importance and character. It is not possible to fully understand, and as a consequence accept on an intuitive basis, the 'mystery' and fascinations arising from the transformation of matter, without first adopting a convincing sub-microscopic view, able to connect observed macroscopic …
Diritti dei bambini, diritti delle famiglie. Promuovere e formare le “capacità” genitoriali
2020
The paper focuses on the reasons for the link between children's rights and family rights, in order to highlight that parenting educational competences are challenging risk factor in contexts of poverty and always decisive factor for the actual promotion of the rights of children and adolescents. More precisely, firstly the passages of of the Convention in which the necessity of the family is argued as primary context of children's rights. Secondly, it will be problematized the very idea of children's rights in the light of the "capability approach". On this basis, it will be asked whether, from a pedagogical point of view, the family can, as a whole, be the holder of a right to education…
Diritti per l’educazione. Contesti e orientamenti pedagogici
2020
The book focuses on the Convention on the Right of child as the result of a slow historical, cultural and in particular pedagogical path of progressive discovery of the specific dignity of childhood and adolescence. It is argue that, even if nowadays, more than thirty years after the drafting of the Convention, the attention to the intrinsic dignity of boys and girls, may seem indisputable and obvious, however such an attention is an achievement for a small part of the world and, also woth regard to the so-called advanced society, one might wonder to what extent and in what contexts, the twentieth century was the century of children and what is really, in the century we are living, the care…
An integrated approach based on Life Cycle Assessment and Thermoeconomics: Application to a water-cooled chiller for an air conditioning plant
2018
Abstract A large number of methods for energy systems analysis were developed in the last decades, aimed at acquiring an in-depth understanding of plant performances and enabling analysts to identify optimal design and operating conditions. In this work an integrated approach based on Life Cycle Assessment and Thermoeconomics is proposed as a method for assessing the exergo-environmental profile of energy systems. The procedure combines the capabilities of these two techniques, to account simultaneously for aspects related to thermodynamics of energy conversion processes and to the overall impacts along the plant life cycle related to other phases, i.e. from raw material extraction to the d…
Analyzing Regional Geographic Challenges: The Resilience of Chinese Vineyards to Land Degradation Using a Societal and Biophysical Approach
2021
Land degradation, especially soil erosion, is a societal issue that affects vineyards worldwide, but there are no current investigations that inform specifically about soil erosion rates in Chinese vineyards. In this review, we analyze this problem and the need to avoid irreversible damage to soil and their use from a regional point of view. Information about soil erosion in vineyards has often failed to reach farmers, and we can affirm that to this time, soil erosion in Chinese vineyards has been more of a scientific hypothesis than an agronomic or environmental concern. Two hypotheses can be presented to justify this review: (i) there are no official and scientific investigations on viney…
Searching for a hidden charm h(1) state in the X(4660) -> eta h(1) and X(4660) -> eta D*(D)over-bar* decays
2013
We explore the possibility of experimentally detecting a predicted h(1) inverted right perpendicular I-G(J(PC)) = 0(-)(1(+-))inverted left perpendicular state of hidden charm made out from the D*(D) over bar* interaction. The method consists in measuring the decay of X(4660) into eta D*(D) over bar* and determining the binding energy with respect to the D*(D) over bar* threshold from the shape of the D*(D) over bar* invariant mass distribution. A complementary method consists in looking at the inclusive X(4660) -> eta X decay and searching for a peak in the X invariant mass distribution. We make calculations to determine the partial decay width of X(4660) -> eta h(1) from the measured X(466…
Behavior of Flavor Compounds in Model Food Systems: a Thermodynamic Study
2003
Physicochemical parameters, such as hydrophobicity, water solubility, and volatility, of four flavor compounds (ethyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, ethyl hexanoate, and 2-pentanone) were determined. The amount of flavor compounds released from different model matrices (mineral water, purified triolein, an oil-in-water emulsion, a carbohydrate matrix, and a complex matrix containing lipids and carbohydrates) into the gaseous phase was determined at thermodynamic equilibrium, at 37 degrees C, by static headspace gas chromatography. The degree of interaction between the flavor compounds and the matrix components was shown by measuring the percentage retention using the water matrix as the reference…
