Kinetic experiments on the binding of metyrapone to liver microsomes
1969
Kinetic experiments on the inhibition of oxidative microsomal O- and N-demethylations by metyrapone (2-methyl-1, 2-bis(3-pyridyl)-l-propanone, Su 4885) were carried out using mouse liver microsomes as the enzyme source. The model substrates were p-nitroanisole and N-monomethyl-p-nitroaniline. It was shown that the inhibition is competitive. The K i for metyrapone is 0.42 × 10−4 M and for the reduced metabolite of metyrapone 1.15×10−4 M. Their spectral dissooiation constants as determined from difference spectra have almost the same values. From this it is concluded that the degree of inhibition is correlated to the amount of metyrapone bound to cytochrome P-450. Metyrapone does not seem to …
A taxonomic survey of lactic acid bacteria isolated from wheat (Triticum durum) kernels and non-conventional flours
2007
In order to explore the correspondence between raw material- and mature sourdough-lactic acid bacterial (LAB) communities, 59 Italian wheat (Triticum durum) grain samples, one bran and six non-conventional flour samples were analyzed through a culture-dependent approach. The highest cell count by an agar medium specific for LAB was 2.16 log CFU/g. From about 2300 presumptive LAB (Gram-positive and catalase-negative) colonies collected, a total of 356 isolates were subjected to identification by a genetic polyphasic strategy consisting of RAPD-PCR analysis, partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing, species-specific and multiplex PCRs. The isolates were recognized as 137 strains belonging to Aerococc…
s-wave charmed baryon resonances from a coupled-channel approach with heavy quark symmetry
2009
We study charmed baryon resonances which are generated dynamically within a unitary meson-baryon coupled channel model that treats the heavy pseudoscalar and vector mesons on equal footing as required by heavy-quark symmetry. It is an extension of recent SU(4) models with t-channel vector meson exchanges to a SU(8) spin-flavor scheme, but differs considerably from the SU(4) approach in how the strong breaking of the flavor symmetry is implemented. Some of our dynamically generated states can be readily assigned to recently observed baryon resonances, while others do not have a straightforward identification and require the compilation of more data as well as an extension of the model to d-w…
Properties of D and D-* mesons in the nuclear medium
2009
We study the properties of D and D-* mesons in nuclear matter within a simultaneous self-consistent coupled-channel unitary approach that implements heavy-quark symmetry. The in-medium solution accounts for Pauli blocking effects and for the D and D-* self-energies in a self-consistent manner. We pay special attention to renormalization of the intermediate propagators in the medium beyond the usual cutoff scheme. We analyze the behavior in the nuclear medium of the rich spectrum of dynamically generated baryonic resonances in the C=1 and S=0 sector and their influence on the self-energy and, hence, the spectral function of D and D-* mesons. The D meson quasiparticle peak mixes with Sigma(c)…
Towards Low-Cost Pavement Condition Health Monitoring and Analysis Using Deep Learning
2020
Governments are faced with countless challenges to maintain conditions of road networks. This is due to financial and physical resource deficiencies of road authorities. Therefore, low-cost automated systems are sought after to alleviate these issues and deliver adequate road conditions for citizens. There have been several attempts at creating such systems and integrating them within Pavement management systems. This paper utilizes replicable deep learning techniques to carry out hotspot analyses on urban road networks highlighting important pavement distress types and associated severities. Following this, analyses were performed illustrating how the hotspot analysis can be carried out to…
Data Augmentation Approach in Bayesian Modelling of Presence-only Data
2011
Abstract Ecologists are interested in prediction of potential distribution of species in suitable areas, essential for planning conservation and management strategies. Unfortunately, often the only available information in such studies is the true presence of the species at few locations of the study area and the associated environmental covariates over the entire area, referred as presence-only data. We propose a Bayesian approach to estimate logistic linear regressions adapted to presence-only data through the introduction of a random approximation of the correction factor in the adjusted logistic model that allows us to overcome the need to know a priori the prevalence of the species.
Quantitative approaches for evaluating the influence of films using the IMDb database
2016
[EN] Why do films certain remain influential throughout film history? The purpose of this paper is to attempt to answer this question. To do so, we adopt some quantitative approaches that facilitate an objective interpretation of the data. The data source we have chosen for this study is the Internet Online Movie Database (IMDb), and in particular, one of its sections called "Connections", which lists references made to a film in subsequent movies and references made in the film itself to previous ones. The extraction and analysis of these networks of citations allows us to draw some conclusions about the most influential movies in film history, identifying their distinguishing features, an…
An author keyword analysis for mapping Sport Sciences
2018
[EN] Scientific production has increased exponentially in recent years. It is necessary to find methodological strategies for understanding holistic or macro views of the major research trends developed in specific fields. Data mining is a useful technique to address this task. In particular, our study presents a global analysis of the information generated during last decades in the Sport Sciences Category (SSC) included in the Web of Science database. An analysis of the frequency of appearance and the dynamics of the Author Keywords (AKs) has been made for the last thirty years. Likewise, the network of co-occurrences established between words and the survival time of new words that have …
The foundations of decision theory: An intuitive, operational approach with mathematical extensions
1985
A new axiomatic basis for the foundations of decision theory is introduced and its mathematical development outlined. The system combines direct intuitive operational appeal with considerable structural flexibility in the resulting mathematical framework.
