Stability analysis of Beck's column over a fractional-order hereditary foundation

2018

This paper considers the case of Beck's column resting on a hereditary bed of independent springpots. The springpot possesses an intermediate rheological behaviour among linear spring and linear dashpot. It is defined by means of couple ( C β ,  β ) that characterize the material of the element and is ruled by a Caputo's fractional derivative. In this paper, we investigate the critical load of the column under the action of a follower load by means of a novel complex transform that allows to use the Routh–Hurwitz theorem in the complex half-plane for the stability analysis.

Habitat preferences of edible dormouse, Glis glis italicus: implications for the management of arboreal mammals in Mediterranean forests

2015

Research on arboreal mammals living in Mediterranean forests is poor. Molecular research assessed the existence of an evolutionary significant unit in the edible dormouse populations living in south Italy, Sicily and Sardinia, and we decided to investigate the environmental factors capable of explaining its occurrence and abundance in Sicily, for a better management of these populations. We assessed the species habitat preferences by setting 25 large and 25 small nestboxes in five sample areas along an altitudinal gradient of the Madonie Range, and recorded habitat variables, food availability, and demographic data for two years. To obtain synthetic descriptors of the dormice habitat requir…

A methodological comparison of head-cut based gully erosion susceptibility models

2020

Abstract A GIS-based hybrid approach for gully erosion susceptibility mapping (GESM) in the Biarjamand watershed in Iran is presented. A database comprised of 15 geo-environmental factors (GEFs) was compiled and used to predict the spatial distribution of 358 gully locations; 70% (251) of which were extracted for training and 30% (107) for validation. A Dempster-Shafer (DS) statistical model was employed to map susceptibility. Next, the results of four kernels (binary logistic, reg logistic, binary logitraw, and reg linear) of a boosted regression tree (BRT) model were combined to increase the efficiency and accuracy of the mapping. Area under receiver operating characteristics (AUROC), tru…

Wenker, Georg (1852–1911)

2006

Georg Wenker (1852–1911) was the founder of a) dialect cartography and b) of the ‘indirect method’ in dialectology. From the very beginning (1877), his maps were empirically based on some 40 Standard German sentences, the so-called 40 ‘Wenker sentences,’ composed under prestructural aspects with regard to the historical grammar and, consequently, to the structural approach to dialects in the Kleiner Deutscher Sprachatlas (see Veith et al., 1984–1999). Their translation into local dialects was done by public school children assisted; their teachers assisted them and wrote the translations down (‘indirect method’). This method of exploring was different from the direct method used, e.g., for …

Fringed Life Satisfaction? A Life-Course Perspective on the Impact of International Migration on Subjective Well-Being

2018

This chapter investigates the role of personal life events in changing levels of life satisfaction and tries to contrast migrants to native population in this respect. Marriage, divorce, separation, widowhood, and having children are considered as potential triggers for differential transformations of migrant lives as compared to non-migrant. The main assumption relies on the increased uncertainty and destandardization of migrant life course, given their spatial mobility that disrupts stages of traditional life cycle. The findings from the panel data obtained from German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP; Germany), collected during more than three decades, reveal higher sensitivity of migrants to…

Network for blood pressure research in children and adolescents (COST Action CA 19115)

2021

High blood pressure is a clearly established modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular and renal disease. Although most of its adverse effects develop in adulthood, it has become clear that high BP is a lifelong problem that can manifest early in life. While few would dispute the importance of taking effective steps to identify and manage this condition in middle-aged and elderly individuals, relatively little attention has been paid to the problem of high BP in children and adolescents. Therefore, the development of actions focused on early childhood, childhood and adolescence and the investigation of the underlying causes of this epidemic are of utmost importance. There is a pressing need …

Gender, exercise, and health: A life-course cross-sectional study.

2020

The purpose of this study is to explore relationships between the practice of exercise, gender, and health, from adolescence to old age, testing the magnitude of gender differences throughout the life cycle in the practice of exercise of Spanish people. A cross-sectional study with 4,575 women and 4,334 men, aged 13-85 years, was conducted. The participants were assessed on the weekly hours they dedicated to the practice of exercise, masculine/instrumental and feminine/expressive traits, mental health symptomatology, and self-rated health). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed in the age groups of adolescence, late adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood, and older age…

Promoting influenza prevention for elderly people in Hong Kong using health action process approach: study protocol.

2018

People 65 years or older are at greater risk of serious complications from the seasonal influenza compared with young. To promote elderly people’s behavioral compliance toward influenza prevention, the aim of the current project is to develop, implement, and evaluate a theory-based low-administration-cost intervention building on a leading psychological theory, the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA). The target group is Hong Kong Chinese elderly people aged 65 or older who rarely or never adopt any preventive actions. This project will be conducted in three phases over 24 months. In phase 1, intervention program will be developed building on the HAPA theoretical framework which comprises…

Dietary Patterns and Cognitive Decline: key features for prevention

2019

The decline in cognitive function is generally the result of the complex interaction of several factors. First of all, age, but also demographic, educational, genetic, socio-economic, and environmental determinants, including nutrition. Cognitive decline and dementia prevalence are increasing, and they are projected to continue increasing in the next decades due to the aging of the world population. Currently, there are no effective pharmacological treatments for these devastating and disabling conditions, which emphasize the key role of preventive strategies. There is compelling evidence of the role of diet and lifestyle on cognitive function. Therefore, dietary/ nutritional approaches th…
