Low Complexity Image Compression using Pruned 8-point DCT Approximation in Wireless Visual Sensor Networks

2017

International audience; Since the transmission of the uncompressed image in the context of wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs) consumes less energy than transmitting the compressed image, developing energy-aware compression algorithms are mandatory to extend the camera node's lifetime and thereby the whole network lifetime. The present paper studies a low-complexity image compression algorithm in the context of WVSNs. This algorithm consists of applying a pruning approach on a DCT approximation transform. The scheme is investigated in terms of computation cycles, processing time, energy consumption and image quality. Experimental works are conducted using the Atmel Atmega128 processor o…

Higher learning for happiness? The non-economic benefits of higher education

2015

International audience; This project examines the impact of higher education on wellbeing in Canada and internationally using the capability approach. The focus is theoretical and empirical: The conceptual conclusions and statistical results are compared to those of human capital and utilitarian approaches, and the implications for higher education research in Canada are explored.

Collaboration and Decision Making in Crisis Situations

2016

[EN] Emergencies are critical situations that demand immediate action to avoid adverse consequences to life and property. Recent events around the world highlight the importance of the theme. A key challenge in Emergency Management is decision-making under time pressure, with an overload of unconfirmed, uncertain and conflicting information, including the management of many people, with distinct and possibly fluid roles, in different places. Collaboration in these settings is an interesting element, since emergency response generally involves multiple agencies and the public, which, having different views, protocols and priorities, must act in concert to handle the situation. In addition, a…

Predictive Value of Basal Serum Progesterone for Successful IVF in Endometriosis Patients: The Need for a Personalized Approach

2022

The data regarding the role of progesterone (P4) in reproductive events of endometriosis patients are limited. This prospective study aimed to examine the predictive value of basal P4 serum levels for successful in vitro fertilization (IVF) in patients with primary infertility and endometriosis. The study included 73 patients divided according to endometriosis treatment (surgery vs. control—no treatment). The general data, basal hormonal status, and pregnancy rates were determined for every patient. Clinical pregnancy was achieved in 40.3% of patients, and more often in patients treated for endometriosis before IVF. The regression analysis showed that higher basal P4 serum levels were assoc…

Modeling the influence of alternative forest management scenarios on wood production and carbon storage: A case study in the Mediterranean region

2016

Forest ecosystems are fundamental for the terrestrial biosphere as they deliver multiple essential ecosystem services (ES). In environmental management, understanding ES distribution and interactions and assessing the economic value of forest ES represent future challenges. In this study, we developed a spatially explicit method based on a multi-scale approach (MiMoSe-Multiscale Mapping of ecosystem services) to assess the current and future potential of a given forest area to provide ES. To do this we modified and improved the InVEST model in order to adapt input data and simulations to the context of Mediterranean forest ecosystems. Specifically, we integrated a GIS-based model, scenario …

Inclusion of immigrant children

2018

The Middle East and sub‐Saharan African countries have been suffering by wars during last few years and therefore Europe meets new challenges that are caused by new waves of refugees, which are crossing the boarders of Europe every day. Majority of migrants is consisting of young or more than young people, forced to abandon their own homes, their own cities, their own schools. Although this could look like talking about individual dramas, abandoning schools and depriving a whole generation of education means, really, prejudicing the future of the whole society and prejudicing the future of the countries of origin, which would be deprived of potential future productive and managerial classes…

Multilevel Methodology Approach for the Construction of Real Estate Monthly Index Numbers

2015

AbstractIn this paper, we evaluate price indices and hedonic price indices for Italian real estate data using multilevel models. The methodology is based on a random coefficient panel data model. We propose a Laspeyres-type price index and hedonic prices indexes based on some characteristics of the sold properties. The multilevel hierarchical analysis has the advantage of allowing the appraisal analysis for groups, and identified in the same sample data the hierarchical structures of market segmentation according to the parameters of the real estate segment. It allows getting a lot of regression functions as the number of groups identified. Obviously, this depends on the sample size and the…

Headspace Volatile Composition of the Flowers of Caralluma europaea N.E.Br. (Apocynaceae)

2009

The volatile constituents of the flowers of Caralluma (Apteranthes) europaea (Guss.) N.E. Br. (Apocynaceae - Asclepiadoideae) from Lampedusa Island were analyzed by headspace method. The analyses allowed the identification and quantification of 41 compounds. The main components were, among the monoterpenoids, terpinolene (23.3%), a-terpinene (19.1%) and linalool (18.4%), whereas, among the carbonylic compounds the major constituents were heptanal (2.0%), octanoic acid (2.4%) and hexanoic acid (1.7%). It is worth to mention the presence of a nitrogen containing compound, indole (0.8%) and of a sulphur containing compound, dimethylsulphide (t). The compounds found in the flowers of C. europea…

The gender gap in the diagnostic-therapeutic journey of the infertile couple

2021

Medical procreation impairs both the biological and psychological lives of couples. However, male and female attitudes to infertility are different and require a different approach during the IVF journey. Thus, the gender impact assessment (GIA) method was used to analyse original studies present in the literature. We found some gender-related differences and, subsequently, possible outcomes of intervention to improve healthy reproduction management and prevent infertility. In particular, it became apparent that there was the need for an in-depth male infertility assessment and a gender-specific follow-up.
