Some New Symbolic Algorithms for the Computation of Generalized Asymptotes

2022

We present symbolic algorithms for computing the g-asymptotes, or generalized asymptotes, of a plane algebraic curve, C, implicitly or parametrically defined. The g-asymptotes generalize the classical concept of asymptotes of a plane algebraic curve. Both notions have been previously studied for analyzing the geometry and topology of a curve at infinity points, as well as to detect the symmetries that can occur in coordinates far from the origin. Thus, based on this research, and in order to solve practical problems in the fields of science and engineering, we present the pseudocodes and implementations of algorithms based on the Puiseux series expansion to construct the g-asymptotes of a p…

Implications of Theories of Language for Information Systems

1985

This article demonstrates how language views can be adopted into an information systems context. We distinguish here between five language views: denotational, generative, cognitive, behavioristic, and interactionist. These views differ in their assumptions about he origin of linguistic behavior, the primary functions of language, elements of language, and the nature of linguistic knowledge. Information system development approaches can be characterized by their underlying language views. This explains great differences in development methods and research. Thus, language views have implications and should be chosen continency for a given information system context.

Systemic Approaches for Business Innovation and Sustainability. Editorial Note to the Special Section for the 2nd BS Lab Symposium-Rome 2014

2014

Our times are characterized by intense transformations in the competitive logics of markets and, broadly speaking, of business systems. Business scenarios today are typified by dynamism, connectivity, nonlinearity, and emergent properties—i n other words by ‘complexity’ (Dominici,2012). The systemic approach has been pivotal to open new lenses and understandings of the inner dynamics of complex systems. In recent times, we have witnessed a paradigm shift in the managerial approach from the whole/part model to the systemice nvironmental approach. This shift generated the epistemological frame of the systemic approach to social sciences in the fields of sociology, management and economics (Pita…

Warm Experts 2.0

2019

This chapter focuses on family roles in digital families, drawing upon, and updating for the present day, the concept of the warm expert. First, the impact of information and communication technologies on family roles is investigated, based on qualitative research material collected from Finland, Italy and Slovenia in 2014 and 2015. After that the analysis looks at how family roles and responsibilities can change over the human life course. Three types of warm experts are identified, with their characteristics described and discussed. Lastly, the argument is made that intimately knowing the other family members is an essential quality of those acting in the role of warm experts, and that wh…

Semantic retrieval: an approach to representing, searching and summarising text documents

2011

Nowadays, the internet is the major source of information for millions of people. There are many search tools available on the net but finding appropriate text information is still difficult. The retrieval efficiency of the presently used systems cannot be significantly improved: ‘bag of words’ interpretation causes losing semantics of texts. We applied the functional approach to represent English text documents. It allows taking into account semantic relations between words when indexing documents and use ordinary English sentences as queries to a search engine. The proposed retrieval mechanisms return only highly relevant documents. They make it possible to generate content-aware summarie…

Hybrid magnetic superconductors formed by TaS2 layers and spin crossover complexes.

2013

The restacking of charged TaS2 nanosheets with molecular counterparts has so far allowed for the combination of superconductivity with a manifold of other molecule-intrinsic properties. Yet, a hybrid compound that blends superconductivity with spin crossover switching has still not been reported. Here we continue to exploit the solid-state/molecule-based hybrid approach for the synthesis of a layered TaS2-based material that hosts Fe(2+) complexes with a spin switching behavior. The chemical design and synthetic aspects of the exfoliation/restacking approach are discussed, highlighting how the material can be conveniently obtained in the form of highly oriented easy-to-handle flakes. An experience of elicited inquiry elucidating the electron transport in semiconductor crystals

2016

In this study we report the results of an inquiry-driven learning path experienced by a sample of 10 electronic engineering students, engaged to investigate the electron transport in semiconductors. The undergraduates were first instructed by following a lecture-based class on condensed matter physics and then involved into an inquiry based path of simulative explorations. The students were invited by two instructors to explore the electron dynamics in a semiconductor bulk by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The students, working in group, had to design their own procedure of exploration, as expected in a traditional guided inquiry. But they experienced several difficulties on planning and…

Combining Hexanoic Acid Plant Priming with Bacillus thuringiensis Insecticidal Activity against Colorado Potato Beetle

2013

Interaction between insect herbivores and host plants can be modulated by endogenous and exogenous compounds present in the source of food and might be successfully exploited in Colorado potato beetle (CPB) pest management. Feeding tests with CPB larvae reared on three solanaceous plants (potato, eggplant and tomato) resulted in variable larval growth rates and differential susceptibility to Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Aa toxin as a function of the host plant. An inverse correlation with toxicity was observed in Cry3Aa proteolytic patterns generated by CPB midgut brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMV) from Solanaceae-fed larvae, being the toxin most extensively proteolyzed on potato, followed…

Sociocultural Factors and Female Entrepreneurship in the Innovative Service Sector in Catalonia: A Qualitative Analysis

2013

The purpose of this chapter is to analyse the main sociocultural factors and their impact on female entrepreneurship in the innovative service sector in Catalonia (Spain) and to establish differences to male initiatives using the institutional approach as a theoretical framework. Based on a comparative case study, the principal findings suggest that social networks, role models, entrepreneurial attitudes and family context are important determinants of female entrepreneurship. Family context is, in particular, a crucial factor, which might have a larger impact on women than men. The research contributes both theoretically, with the creation of knowledge in less researched areas such as fema…
