Exact stationary solution for a class of non-linear systems driven by a non-normal delta-correlated process

1995

In this paper the exact stationary solution in terms of probability density function for a restricted class of non-linear systems under both external and parametric non-normal delta-correlated processes is presented. This class has been obtained by imposing a given probability distribution and finding the corresponding dynamical system which satisfies the modified Fokker-Planck equation. The effectiveness of the results has been verified by means of a Monte Carlo simulation.

High redshift galaxies in the ALHAMBRA survey

2015

Context. Most observational results on the high redshift restframe UV-bright galaxies are based on samples pinpointed using the so called dropout technique or Ly-alpha selection. However, the availability of multifilter data allows now replacing the dropout selections by direct methods based on photometric redshifts. In this paper we present the methodology to select and study the population of high redshift galaxies in the ALHAMBRA survey data. Aims. Our aim is to develop a less biased methodology than the traditional dropout technique to study the high redshift galaxies in ALHAMBRA and other multifilter data. Thanks to the wide area ALHAMBRA covers, we especially aim at contributing in th…

The Probability Law for Generic Density Operators

2020

In this chapter, the probability law of the non-null eigenstates of a generic density operator—studied in the previous chapter—is determined, by showing that given the composite system and the subsystem being considered, a mapping arises which associates a universal probability distribution to the non-null eigenstates of the generic density operator. We thus recover the Born statistical interpretation without having assumed it as a postulate.

A study on the degree of relationship between two individuals.

2000

The paper studies the likely degree of relationship between two individuals who could possibly be half sibs. The possible common ancestor was dead, which further complicated the problem. The model used was devised by Thompson [in Rao and Chakraborty (eds): Handbook of Statistics, North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1991] and establishes a correspondence between the possible degree of relationship and certain feasible probability distributions on the number of identical by descent genes. Two statistical approaches are considered: the classical one, in which the maximum likelihood estimation for the parameters of Thompson’s model are obtained, and the Bayesian one, in which the test of the hypothesis o…

Limit Analysis of Structures with Stochastic Strength Variations∗

1972

Abstract On the basis of a probabilistic fomulation of the fundamental theorems of “limit analysis,” a procedure is developed which allows, with a very limited amount of computing work, the determination of a domain containing the probability distribution curve of the collapse load factor of any structure that satisfies the usual conditions for validity of the limit analysis, but has randomly distributed limit strengths. Further improvements of the bounds thus obtained can be achieved by the equivalent of either the equilibrium or the kinematic methods of limit analysis.

Listwise Collaborative Filtering

2015

Recently, ranking-oriented collaborative filtering (CF) algorithms have achieved great success in recommender systems. They obtained state-of-the-art performances by estimating a preference ranking of items for each user rather than estimating the absolute ratings on unrated items (as conventional rating-oriented CF algorithms do). In this paper, we propose a new ranking-oriented CF algorithm, called ListCF. Following the memory-based CF framework, ListCF directly predicts a total order of items for each user based on similar users' probability distributions over permutations of the items, and thus differs from previous ranking-oriented memory-based CF algorithms that focus on predicting th…

No-Forcing and No-Matching Theorems for Classical Probability Applied to Quantum Mechanics

2013

Correlations of spins in a system of entangled particles are inconsistent with Kolmogorov's probability theory (KPT), provided the system is assumed to be non-contextual. In the Alice-Bob EPR paradigm, non-contextuality means that the identity of Alice's spin (i.e., the probability space on which it is defined as a random variable) is determined only by the axis \alphai chosen by Alice, irrespective of Bob's axis \betaj (and vice versa). Here, we study contextual KPT models, with two properties: (1) Alice's and Bob's spins are identified as Aij and Bij, even though their distributions are determined by, respectively, \alphai alone and \betaj alone, in accordance with the no-signaling requir…

Evolved factor method for service life prediction of building components

2013

Key issues in the production process associated with construction are the implementation of quality and sustainability principles. Indeed, it is increasingly important in the maintenance of quality levels provided by materials, components and building structures, especially after the recent Regulation (EU) No. 305/2011. This document introduced the seventh requirement for the sustainable use of natural resources, guaranteeing the durability of construction products, thus being planned. The international standard for the assessment of durability of building materials and components is the ISO 15686 - Buildings and constructed assets - Service life planning, providing the definition of the Re…

Analysis, Modeling and Simulation of Complex Regional Clusters Activities, Using Arena Simulation Software

2014

Process modelling is the concise description of the total variation in one quantity, y, by partitioning it into a deterministic component given by a mathematical function of one or more other quantities, x1, x2... plus a random component that follows a particular probability distribution. The models are material or immaterial systems, which represent other systems, so that it may be possible to manipulate the built structures and their states. The main elements of a simulation are: attributes (describe and differentiate entities), variables (system characteristics), resources (whose capacity can be variable), tails (seen in case of unavailability of resources) and statistical accumulators (…

Deriving Reference Decisions

1998

To solve a statistical decision problem from a Bayesian viewpoint, the decision maker must specify a probability distribution on the parameter space, his prior distribution. In order to analyze the influence of this prior distribution on the solution of the problem, Bernardo (1981) proposed to compare the results with those that one would obtain by using that prior distribution which maximizes the useful experimental information, thus introducing the concept of reference decision. This definition is too involved for most of the problems usually found in practice. Here we analyze situations in which it is possible to simplify the definition of the reference decision, and we provide condition…
