A nested virtualization tool for information technology practical education

2016

Background A common problem of some information technology courses is the difficulty of providing practical exercises. Although different approaches have been followed to solve this problem, it is still an open issue, specially in security and computer network courses. Results This paper proposes NETinVM, a tool based on nested virtualization that includes a fully functional lab, comprising several computers and networks, in a single virtual machine. It also analyzes and evaluates how it has been used in different teaching environments. Conclusions The results show that this tool makes it possible to perform demos, labs and practical exercises, greatly appreciated by the students, that woul…

Problem-based learning for anesthesia resident operating room crisis management training.

2018

Background Senior anesthesia residents must acquire competency in crisis management for operating room (OR) emergencies. We conducted problem based learning (PBL) OR emergency scenarios for anesthesia residents, focused on emergencies in ‘Airway’, ‘Circulation’, ‘Central venous catheter’, and ‘Pain management complications’. Non-technical skills are an integral component of team-based OR emergency management. Methods Prior to integrated OR emergency clinical and non-technical skills PBL training, participating 35 anesthesia residents completed two 5-point scale surveys regarding frequency of emergency experiences in the operating room, and self-confidence for anesthesia-related crisis manag…

Effectiveness of a videoconference training course on implementing pharmacy services

2009

Objective The aim of this research was to assess the effects of a series of four training courses comprised of 13 synchronous videoconferences on the implementation of cognitive services in Spanish community pharmacies. Setting A phone survey to continuing training course attendants. Methods A random sample of 225 pharmacists registered in a 2004 videoconference course was selected. The phone-survey questionnaire included quality perception elements rated on a 5-point Likert scale, and a series of questions used to identify position in the Rogers 5-step innovation-decision model. An algorithm was used to translate the questions into Rogers' categories. To discover determinants of attendants…

Students' and teachers' experiences of a problem-based learning method in health promotion in a Finnish polytechnic

2003

Objective This study explored students' and their teachers' experiences of a problem-based learning method (PBL) and its manifestation in health promotion education. Design The study was based on a more extensive follow-up research project that investigated the teaching and learning of health promotion in two polytechnics of health care from 1997 to 2000. Settings A Finnish polytechnic of health care and nursing within a larger multidisciplinary educational institution. Method The data consisted of interviews with nine student nurses and ten teachers, conducted in 1999 and 2000. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis. Results During the first year when the polytechnic star…

Problem-based learning versus lectures : comparison of academic results and time devoted by teachers in a course on Dentistry in Special Patients

2008

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching-learning technique centred on the complete development of the student. It has been successfully implemented in several universities, notably in the health sciences. The process of creating the European Higher Education Area, initiated in Bologna, encourages European universities to use new methodologies in the teaching-learning process, including PBL. Our objectives were to analyze the results obtained by using PBL with fifth-year Dentistry students. We made a comparison of academic results between students receiving lectures and PBL participants, and assessment of differences between them in the time devoted to tasks by students and teachers. PBL …

Using Prototyping in Authentic Learning of Human-Centred Design of Mobile Apps

2017

Recent advances in mobile technology have seen a sharp increase in the number of mobile applications across various application domains. The challenge remains that many software development teams may lack appropriate competences to design usable and human-centred interactive systems. This can negatively affect the usability and the user experience. In this article, we present how to learn the human-centred design process using an authentic learning approach. Students need to investigate, discuss, construct new knowledge and apply theoretical concepts to address real world problems. The main purpose of authentic learning as a pedagogical approach is to position the subject of study into a re…

A first experience with Problem-based learning in a course of Psychometrics

2019

The aim of this study was to to describe students’ perceptions on problem-based learning (PBL) when applied in a course of Psychometrics. 34 students participated in the course. Activities were conducted in groups of three students during two sessions of two hours each, and included the traditional steps in the PBL tutorial process. Participants were surveyed on their perceptions on PBL, acquisition of competences in PBL vs Traditional learning, and will to use PBL methodology in the future. Results pointed that students’ perceived PBL could help them to improve group work and problem resolution. Students preferred PBL methodology to acquire responsibility for learning, work with groups and…

An ADOxx Based Environment for Problem Based Learning in Manufacturing Systems Design

2019

The Problem Based Learning (PBL) as student centred approach and learning-by-doing method is suited for the modern higher education. However, the first contact with the method can be overwhelming for the students, in the absence of prior domain knowledge. The preparation of the learning material can be time and resource consuming for the teacher. The goal of the research was the implementation of an environment that should enhance the learning experience for the student and reduce the implementation burden for the teacher. The environment is based on the ADOxx platform and allows the collaboration of the learner teams and the teacher-learner interaction on three levels. The Metamodeling lev…

Comparing three experiential learning methods and their effect on medical students' attitudes to learning communication skills.

2012

Background: Despite numerous studies exploring medical students’ attitudes to communication skills learning (CSL), there are apparently no studies comparing different experiential learning methods and their influence on students’ attitudes. Aims: We compared medical students’ attitudes to learning communication skills before and after a communication course in the data as a whole, by gender and when divided into three groups using different methods. Method: Second-year medical students (n ¼ 129) were randomly assigned to three groups. In group A (n ¼ 42) the theatre in education method, in group B (n ¼ 44) simulated patients and in group C (n ¼ 43) role-play were used. The data were gathere…
