Genetic analysis of reaction time variability: room for improvement?

2013

Background. Increased reaction time variability (RTV) on cognitive tasks requiring a speeded response is characteristic of several psychiatric disorders. In attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the association with RT is strong phenotypically and genetically, yet high RTV is not a stable impairment but shows ADHD-sensitive improvement under certain conditions, such as those with rewards. The state regulation theory proposed that the RTV difference score, which captures change from baseline to a rewarded or fast condition, specifically measures ‘state regulation’. By contrast, the interpretation of RTV baseline (slow, unrewarded) scores is debated. We aimed to investigate directl…

The association among interpersonal problems, binge behaviors, and self-esteem, in the assessment of obese individuals

2011

Abstract Objectives Although disordered eating has been assumed to be associated with interpersonal problems, there is a lack of research regarding the relationship between interpersonal problems and obesity. This study explored associations among self-esteem, binge behaviors, and interpersonal problems in obese individuals, by contrasting obese persons with overweight persons, and to investigate whether body mass index (BMI), binge behaviors, and self-esteem predict interpersonal problems in obese individuals. Methods A group of nonobese overweight people (n = 65; BMI range, 25-29.9 kg/m 2 ) and a group of obese people (n = 78; BMI >35 kg/m 2 ) were selected from 224 people attending a men…

Psychological distress of children with early-onset type 1 diabetes and their mothers' well-being

2015

Aim Few studies have focused on the psychological adjustment of pre-adolescent children with type 1 diabetes. This study examined psychosocial functioning in nine- and 10-year-old children with early-onset type 1 diabetes, and their mothers, and associations between psychosocial functioning and diabetes management. Methods The mothers of 63 children with early-onset diabetes and 86 healthy children evaluated their own psychosocial functioning, and their child's, with standardised rating scales. We used general linear models to analyse the children's behaviour problems and the mothers' well-being. Associations between the children's behaviour problems, diabetes-related measures and the mothe…

Scores on test of gross motor development of children with dysphasia: a pilot study.

2003

The purpose of this preliminary investigation was to assess the gross motor skill and trainability of children with dysphasia using the Test of Gross Motor Development. 27 children from 7 to 12 years ( M = 9.6 yr., SD=1.3) from four different classes in one special school participated. The gross motor skill scores of a sample of children with dysphasia, their trainability of the gross motor skills, and the intrarater reliability of the test were examined. Based on the videotaped performances the intrarater reliability was .93 to .97 for total scores, but lower for individual test items. Mean motor skill scores of these children with dysphasia were interpreted as ‘poor’ relative to those of…

Indoor air problems and the perceived social climate in schools: A multilevel structural equation analysis

2018

Indoor air problems in schools appear to influence learning outcomes and absence rates. However, previous research has not investigated whether indoor air problems influence the social climate of schools. Therefore, we studied whether indoor air problems observed in schools associate with students' perceptions of the teacher-student relationship and class spirit. The nationwide sample of Finnish schools (N = 194 schools/27153 students) was analyzed using multilevel structural equation modeling. Data on the schools' social climate collected from students were merged with independently collected data on observed indoor air problems from school principals. We found that the teacher-student rel…

A Monge-Kantorovich mass transport problem for a discrete distance

2011

This paper is concerned with a Monge-Kantorovich mass transport problem in which in the transport cost we replace the Euclidean distance with a discrete distance. We fix the length of a step and the distance that measures the cost of the transport depends of the number of steps that is needed to transport the involved mass from its origin to its destination. For this problem we construct special Kantorovich potentials, and optimal transport plans via a nonlocal version of the PDE formulation given by Evans and Gangbo for the classical case with the Euclidean distance. We also study how these problems, when rescaling the step distance, approximate the classical problem. In particular we obta…

Mass transport problems obtained as limits of p-Laplacian type problems with spatial dependence

2014

Abstract. We consider the following problem: given a bounded convex domain Ω ⊂ ℝ N ${\Omega \subset \mathbb {R}^N}$ we consider the limit as p → ∞ of solutions to - div ( b p - p | D u | p - 2 D u ) = f + - f - ${- \operatorname{div} (b_{p}^{-p} |Du|^{p-2} Du)=f_+ - f_-}$ in Ω and b p - p | D u | p - 2 ∂ u ∂ η = 0 ${ b_{p}^{-p} |Du|^{p-2} \frac{\partial u}{\partial \eta }=0}$ on ∂ Ω ${\partial \Omega }$ . Under appropriate assumptions on the coefficients bp that in particular verify that lim p → ∞ b p = b ${ \lim _{p\rightarrow \infty } b_p = b }$ uniformly in Ω ¯ ${\overline{\Omega }}$ , we prove that there is a uniform limit of u p j ${u_{p_j}}$ (along a sequence p j → ∞ ${p_j \rightarrow…

Nonlocal Third Order Boundary Value Problems with Solutions that Change Sign

2014

We investigate the existence and the number of solutions for a third order boundary value problem with nonlocal boundary conditions in connection with the oscillatory behavior of solutions. The combination of the shooting method and scaling method is used in the proofs of our main results. Examples are included to illustrate the results.

A branch-and-cut algorithm for the Orienteering Arc Routing Problem

2016

[EN] In arc routing problems, customers are located on arcs, and routes of minimum cost have to be identified. In the Orienteering Arc Routing Problem (OARP),in addition to a set of regular customers that have to be serviced, a set of potential customers is available. From this latter set, customers have to be chosen on the basis of an associated profit. The objective is to find a route servicing the customers which maximize the total profit collected while satisfying a given time limit on the route. In this paper, we describe large families of facet-inducing inequalities for the OARP and present a branch-and-cut algorithm for its solution. The exact algorithm embeds a procedure which builds…
