Reducing Electric and Thermal Energy Needs in Buildings by Using Innovative Envelope Materials

2018

The life style of building occupants is continuously arising towards conditions that are more comfortable involving, on turn, the growing of the electric energy consumptions for climatization purposes. This calls for the improvement of the efficiencies of equipment along with environmental performance of building materials. Laboratory analyses of samples of mixed materials, utilizing tomato stems harvested in Sicily and Cataluna, have been conducted Thermal conductance and mechanical properties have been detected for different rates of bio-component and inert materials. First results of the thermal properties seem to situate such bio-composites among the insulating building materials, for a…

Which food for whom?

2015

From lack of food to food excess there are numerous different forms of malnutrition, caused by many determining factors. Improving the nutritional condition of populations therefore is a key task of public health care on a planetary level. It is also an economic challenge. The development of an agro-industrial system over the last sixty years has no doubt contributed to make foods safer, but it has also contributed to the consumption of products which are too fat and too sweet. As a consequence the innovation of healthier foods that are affordable has now become an important challenge. This challenge requires developing a new food engineering approach, notably improving the understanding of…

The nature of the chlorination reaction in [1-C6H5-1-CB9H9]- boron clusters.

2010

Preferential chlorination sites resulting from sequential radical substitution reactions in carborane anions have been studied combining experimental and computational methods. Results have been obtained experimentally by mixing the substrate with incremental ratios of N-chlorosuccinimide and analysing the resulting samples by negative MALDI-TOF-MS. The theoretical results have been obtained calculating the 2a-NPA charges on the starting material and computing the most energetically favourable reaction pathway.

Functional characterization of two human olfactory receptors expressed in the baculovirus Sf9 insect cell system

2005

Olfactory receptors (ORs) are the largest member of the G-protein-coupled receptors which mediate early olfactory perception in discriminating among thousands of odorant molecules. Assigning odorous ligands to ORs is a prerequisite to gaining an understanding of the mechanisms of odorant recognition. The functional expression of ORs represents a critical step in addressing this issue. Due to limitations in heterologous expression, very few mammal ORs have been characterized, and so far only one is from human origin. Consequently, OR function still remains poorly understood, especially in humans, whose genome encodes a restricted chemosensory repertoire compared with most mammal species. In …

A software for the integrated design of wastewater treatment plants

1998

Abstract A software package has been developed for automated design of wastewater treatment plants. A user-friendly environment has been implemented to facilitate design tasks, allowing rapid evaluation of different alternatives as well as performing sensitivity analyses. Flexible treatment plant configurations can be established with preliminary, primary, biological and tertiary wastewater treatments, and sludge treatment units. A generalized steady-state model developed for biological processes is also included. The design process includes treatment units sizing, plant layout, hydraulic profile calculation and equipment assignment. The system capabilities for designing new plants and upgr…

Development of a modular room-temperature hydride storage system for vehicular applications

2016

The subject of this paper concerns the development of a vehicular hydrogen tank system, using a commercial interstitial metal hydride as storage material. The design of the tank was intended to feed a fuel cell in a light prototype vehicle, and the chosen hydride material, Hydralloy C5 by GfE, was expected to be able to absorb and desorb hydrogen in a range of pressure suitable for this purpose. A systematic analysis of the material in laboratory scale allows an extrapolation of the thermodynamic and reaction kinetics data. The following development of the modular tank was done according to the requirements of the prototype vehicle propulsion system and led to promising intermediate results…

Characterization of micromixing in a Continuous Oscillatory Baffled Reactor

2018

International audience; Micromixing is the limiting step in the progress of fast reactions and fast crystallization processes. Micromixing performance of a Nitech© glass COBR has been characterized using the competing parallel iodide-iodate test reactions. Macromixing length was also qualitatively determined by visualization of a tracer. The results show that an increase in the amplitude to baffle space ratio and a decrease of oscillation frequency improves mixing performance.

ESP for small scale wood combustion

2009

In this paper new ESP technology developed for fine particle processes are presented. The ESP is based on diffusion charging of particles using sonic jet charger. The ESP concept has been tested using a commercial 20kW wood pellet burner. The removal efficiency was measured to be 80% for submicron particles.

Fabric evolution and the related swelling behaviour of a sand/bentonite mixture upon hydro-chemo-mechanical loadings

2015

This experimental study investigates the swelling behaviour of an 80/20 sand/bentonite mixture and the associated fabric evolution under different hydro-chemo-mechanical loadings. Free and confined swelling tests are performed on specimens compacted to different dry densities and wetted with different pore fluids. Controlled suction confined swelling tests are performed to determine the suction–swelling pressure relationship for two different densities. An extensive microstructural characterisation is performed to relate the observed swelling behaviour to the evolution of the different pore networks during wetting. Based on the microstructural analysis, an expression is proposed to determi…

Distillation and stripping pilot plants for the JUNO neutrino detector: Design, operations and reliability

2019

Abstract This paper describes the design, construction principles and operations of the distillation and stripping pilot plants tested at the Daya Bay Neutrino Laboratory, with the perspective to adapt these processes, system cleanliness and leak-tightness standards to the final full scale plants to be used for the purification of the liquid scintillator of the JUNO neutrino detector. The main goal of these plants is to remove radio impurities from the liquid scintillator while increasing its optical attenuation length. Purification of liquid scintillator will be performed with a system combining alumina oxide, distillation, water extraction and steam (or N 2 gas) stripping. Such a combined…
