An Easy-to-Use AR Authoring Tool for Industrial Applications

2013

Augmented Reality (AR) applications have been emerged last years as a valuable tool for saving significant costs in maintenance and process control tasks in industry. This trend has been stimulated by the appearance of authoring tools that allow the fast and easy development of AR applications. However, most of current AR authoring tools are actually programming interfaces that are exclusively suitable for programmers, and they do not provide advanced visual effects such as occlusion or object collision detection.

Investigation of precipitate in an austenitic ODS steel containing a carbon-rich process control agent

2018

This work has been carried out within the framework of the German Helmholtz Association and has received funding from the topic “Materials Research for the Future Energy Supply”. The work of M. Parish and Rainer Ziegler is gratefully acknowledged. Thanks are also due to the team of the chemical laboratory at the KIT for performing the chemical analysis. The help of the beamline staff at ELETTRA (project 20140052 ) synchrotron radiation facility is acknowledged. We acknowledge support by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and Open Access Publishing Fund of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Noninvasive monitoring of polymer curing reactions by dielectrometry

2011

A microwave sensor system for the noninvasive monitoring of the curing process of a thermoset material placed inside a metallic mold is described. The microwave sensor is designed as an open-ended coaxial resonator with a curved surface adapted to the mold inner shape. The analysis of the microwave resonator comprises a recently developed method for deembedding the effect of coupling network in overcoupled resonators, so the range of permitted measurements encompass both low and high dielectric losses of polymeric materials. Results show that noninvasive, continuous monitoring of the microwave dielectric properties of the thermoset material can be performed in real time, allowing one to che…

Managing IT implementation in virtual enterprises

1996

Konferansebidrag fra Engineering and Technology Management 1996 Vancouver. IEMC 1996 The paper presents a framework of factors influencing information technology (IT) implementation in virtual enterprises. The framework is based on previous research on IT implementation, and field studies conducted in virtual enterprises. The aim is to increase the understanding of the implementation process in this organizational context, and the framework is intended as a basis for developing strategies for successful management of this process

Assessment of process stability and capability in a manufacturing organization: a case study

2021

Quality is considered asthe principal factor that determines the long-termsuccess or failure of any organization. Organizations perform quality control by monitoring process output using Statistical Quality Control, performed as part of the production process (Statistical Process Control, SPC) or as a final quality control check (Acceptance Sampling).SPC is a major quality management statistical tool and its instruments (control charts and capability analysis) are applied to virtually any type of organization (manufacturing, services or transactions - for example, those involving data, communications, software, or movement of materials). The aim of this paper is to present a case study, rea…

Coupling electrodialysis desalination with photovoltaic and wind energy systems for energy storage: Dynamic simulations and control strategy

2020

Abstract The presence of desalination systems in polygeneration facilities is usually limited by important difficulties in operating under non-stationary regimes typical of renewable energy sources. Reverse osmosis, namely the most common desalination technology, is characterised by slow dynamics that rarely adapts to the power fluctuations of renewables. Therefore, the possibility of using electrodialysis coupled with a hybrid photovoltaic/wind energy source was investigated in this work. In particular, the combination of photovoltaic and wind energy is very attractive in order to achieve a more stable energy production, while electrodialysis is claimed to be a more flexible process compar…

Rotating magnetic fields as a means to control the hydrodynamics and heat transfer in single crystal growth processes

1999

The paper discusses a possibility to use different types of rotating magnetic fields (RMF) and combinations of these to control the hydrodynamics and heat/mass transfer in the processes of bulk semiconductor single crystal growth. Some factors contributing to the efficiency of RMF and their influence on different technologies are analyzed. Their specific practical application is illustrated by some examples.

A Knowledge-Based System for the Automatic Generation of Plant Shutdown and Startup Schedules

1988

Abstract When the shutdown of a plant, or part of it, has been decided as consequence of a major fault, the generation of a safe shutdown schedule may be, for large and complex plants, a very difficult and delicate task. The same problem may be found when the plant must be restarted after the fault has been repaired, for the generation of a start-up schedule. The use of a knowledge-based system appears to be a suitable answer to this problem, allowing a high level of safety and a very fast generation process. The paper examines the process knowledge that needs to be included in such a knowledge-based system and proposes some knowledge representation forms that appear suitable for the task t…

Distributed Scrum when Turning into Maintenance : A Single Case Study

2015

Global software development using agile methods is commonplace in software industry nowadays. Scrum, as the agile development management framework, can be distributed in many ways, especially concerning how the key roles are presented in different sites. We describe here a single case study of a distributed Scrum, mainly for maintenance of the already constructed web portal. Using a qualitative method, both working well and challenging parts of the software work, as experienced by the project stakeholders, are revealed and discussed.
