Models of Event Driven Systems

2016

This paper provides the business process modeling approach based on usage of Domain Specific Languages (DSL). The proposed approach allows us to create executable information systems’ models and extends the concept of Event Driven Architecture (EDA) with the business process execution description. It lets us apply principles of the Model Driven Development (MDD) in order to create the information system which complies with the model. The proposed approach provides a set of advantages in information systems development, use and maintenance: bridges the gap between business and IT, an exact specification, which is easily to implement into information system, up-to-date documentation etc. The …

Commercial and financial policies in family firms: The small business growth management flight simulator

2000

An interactive learning environment (ILE) was built to reproduce the budgeting process of a small family-owned entrepreneurial firm and to capture how current decisions affect business growth in a longer time horizon. The ILE matches the accounting-related perspective through which spreadsheet-based budgets are drawn up, with the system dynamics (SD) view. Such a goal has been pursued through a connection of traditional Excel spreadsheets with POWERSIM SD models. Playing the SMALL BUSINESS GROWTH MANAGEMENT FLIGHT SIMULATOR allows one to learn how (a) to draw up a budget based on an SD perspective, (b) long-term goals may be affected by current decisions, (c) business/family survival and gr…

Business Process Models and Information System Usability

2015

Abstract The paper describes the use of business process models for effective managing of information system execution processes and transparent representation of execution statuses. Contrary to traditional approaches where business process models are used only in the initial stages of information system development, the proposed approach suggests direct utilization of business process models during the use of information systems. Information system usability can be improved by using new means of representation, and business process models can serve as an efficient way to visualize execution processes in information systems.

An integrated modelling and remote sensing approach for hydrological study in arid and semi-arid regions: the SUDMED Program

2008

International audience; Recent efforts have been concentrated in the development of models to understand and predict the impact of environmental changes on hydrological cycle and water resources in arid and semi-arid regions. In this context, remote sensing data have been widely used to initialize, to force, or to control the simulations of these models. However, for several reasons, including the difficulty in establishing relationships between observational and model variables, the potential offered by satellite data has not been fully used. As a matter of fact, a few hydrological studies that use remote sensing data emanating from different sources (sensors, platforms) have been performe…

Innovating business processes in public administrations: towards a systemic approach

2020

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to study the credit collection process in public administrations in order to develop a conceptual model which goes beyond the traditional logic of linearity, adopting system thinking approaches.Design/methodology/approachThis study analyses the case of an Italian local government-owned enterprise. Data collection through semi-structured interviews and document analysis has enabled the development of propositions, the identification of systemic variables, and the development of an explanatory modeling process based on the system dynamics approach.FindingsThis paper shows that public administrations can effectively involve external actors, especially citize…

Batch fermentation process: Modelling and direct sensitivity analysis

2009

Based on a nonlinear model, this article realizes an investigation of dynamic behaviour of a batch fermentation process using direct sensitivity analysis (DSA). The used nonlinear mathematical model has a good qualitative and quantitative description of the alcoholic fermentation process. This model has been discussed and validated by authors in other studies. The DSA of dynamic model was used to calculate the matrix of the sensitivity functions in order to determine the influence of the small deviations of initial state, control inputs, and parameters from the ideal nominal values on the state trajectory and system output in time. Process optimization and advanced control strategies can be…

Asynchronous Runtime Verification of Business Processes

2015

The authors propose a runtime verification mechanism for business processes. This mechanism allows verifying the correctness of business process execution and it runs in parallel with the base processes affecting them insignificantly. The authors have identified the case where the use of business process runtime verification is helpful and applicable. The verification mechanism monitors the business process execution and verifies compliance with the base process description. The verification mechanism prototype was developed and tested in real business processes, as well as limits of runtime verification overhead were evaluated.

Generation of User Interfaces from Business Process Model Notation (BPMN)

2019

Business Process Model Notation focuses on functional processes; so, the design of the interface generally depends on the subjective experience of the analyst. This thesis proposes a new method to generate interfaces from BPMN models. The idea is to identify rules from BPMN to interfaces in existing real projects. We have analyzed 7 Bizagi projects to generalize a list of rules. It has been done considering five BPMN patterns. Apart from BPMN primitives, there are rules that depend on elements of Class Diagrams to know how to generate the interfaces. When the rules have several alternatives to generate the interfaces, we need an unambiguous semantics to specify which alternative we are goin…

Graphical modeling and query language for hospitals

2013

Abstract Background So far there has been little evidence that implementation of the health information technologies (HIT) is leading to health care cost savings. One of the reasons for this lack of impact by the HIT likely lies in the complexity of the business process ownership in the hospitals. The goal of our research is to develop a business model-based method for hospital use which would allow doctors to retrieve directly the ad-hoc information from various hospital databases. Methods We have developed a special domain-specific process modelling language called the MedMod. Formally, we define the MedMod language as a profile on UML Class diagrams, but we also demonstrate it on example…

Collaborative EA Information Elicitation Method : The IEM for Business Architecture

2015

This study contributes to the enterprise architecture (EA) methodologies by suggesting a method for eliciting architecture requirements: gathering both the current architecture information, and the development needs and requirements for the business architecture (BA) dimension in EA planning. Most of all EA dimensions, the developing of the BA requires collaboration with various non-IT stakeholders. It presents thus challenges to the IT department, or the consultancy involved in EA related efforts. The contribution of the various stakeholder groups as informants is, however, crucial to well founded EA design decisions. The suggested method takes related IS development fields as starting poi…
