Exporting and innovation performance: analysis of the Annual Small Business Survey in the UK
2011
This paper analyses the determinants of the export propensity of UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) based on the 2004 Annual Small Business Survey. Particular emphasis is placed upon the relationship between innovation activities (distinguishing product from process innovation) and export performance. In general the data suggest that some 17 per cent of firms within this group sell outside the UK. Businesses that export are also characterized by high levels of innovation activity (43 per cent of exporters innovate in products, 27 per cent innovate in process and 21 per cent innovate in both). When considering product and process innovation independently we find that both impact p…
Cloud Based Business Processes Orchestration
2014
Abstract As the value concept of the cloud is evolving from a cost-saving mechanism into a growth instrument, more and more organizations are turning to the cloud in an attempt to redesign their core business processes. The opportunity for process innovation is vast, and it will take the disciplined approach of BPM, with the computing understanding and accessibility of the cloud, to make the most of what lies ahead. With the popularity of cloud computing, Platform-as-a Service (PaaS) becomes one of the core technical enablers of enterprises to change the delivery of services to both customers and internal organizations. An application in an enterprise needs to take into account various spec…
How different policy instruments affect green product innovation : A differentiated perspective
2018
Based on representative firm-level data for the three countries Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, we investigate the effects of energy-related regulations, taxes, voluntary agreements, and subsidies on the creation of green energy products, and analyze through which channels policy affects green product innovation and which factors mediate the observed effects. Policy may affect green product innovation by directly stimulating the supply of green products/services, or more indirectly by stimulating the demand for green products/services. Our data set allows us to distinguish between the two channels, which improves our understanding of the frequently observed positive net effect of policie…
The Escazú Agreement and the Regional Approach to Rio Principle 10: Process, Innovation, and Shortcomings
2019
Abstract The adoption in 2018 of the Escazú Agreement by the countries of the Latin American and Caribbean region marks the second regional legal instrument aimed at the implementation of Principle 10 of the 1992 Rio Declaration, joining the Aarhus Convention of the pan-European region. The international community has settled upon the regional level as the appropriate means for implementing standards related to access to information, public participation, and access to justice in environmental matters. The appropriateness of the regional level is demonstrated by the differences and innovations found in the Escazú Agreement, in its scope and definitions, background principles, burden of proo…
Are quality management practices enough to improve process innovation?
2015
The popularity of quality management as a system for continuous improvement has not been accompanied by deep theoretical understanding of its effects on process innovation. In this work, the resource-based view serves as the basis for the construction of a model designed to explain the effects of quality management practices (QMP) on process innovation performance and the mediating role of dynamic capabilities in this relationship. The empirical data were analysed using the structural equation modelling technique by examining 6 competing models that represent full, partial mediation and non-mediation relationships on a sample of 550 Spanish industrial companies. The findings indicate that t…
