Biogeography and diversity of South Atlantic Cretaceous echinoids: implications for circulation patterns

Abstract This survey of echinoid species living on the African and South American margins of the South Atlantic Ocean in Cretaceous times is based on a review of published species and abundant unpublished material. The synthetic approach is used to ascertain how the South Atlantic was colonised by echinoids from the time it first opened in the Early Cretaceous until communications were established with the North Atlantic and Mediterranean–Tethys in the Late Cretaceous. High-resolution micropalaeontological and chemostratigraphic records for the Hauterivian–Aptian succession outcropping at Calabianca (NW Sicily) provide new insight into the palaeoclimatic and palaeoceanographic evolution of the Tethys Ocean. Calcareous nannofossil and planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy together with δ13C chemostratigraphy allowed the identification of a hiatus in the Barremian and a major one including most of the Upper Aptian, the entire Lower Albian and part of the Middle Albian. Abstract A long-term test at a laboratory scale with a closed system (a coral reef aquarium) has been carried out to study the potentialities of photocatalytic ozonation and photocatalysis for the removal of noxious organic compounds in recirculating systems (aquaria and recirculating aquaculture systems) working with a minimum make up of new water. Attention has been focused not only on the depuration capabilities but also on possible negative phenomena, some of which could become apparent only at long times. Abstract The gas chromatography of mixtures of n -alkyl acetates (CH 3 COOR, R = C 1 —C 8 ) and methyl esters of aliphatic n -carboxylic acids (R′COOCH 3 , R′ = C 1 —C 8 ) and certain of their monochlorinated derivatives has been studied on Carbowax 20M and SE-30 glass capillary columns under the same operating conditions. The separation of the isomeric monochlorinated esters was complete on Carbowax 20M, whereas on SE-30 the peaks of 6- and 7-chlorooctyl acetates and methyl (ω − 1)- and (ω − 2)-chlorooctanoates and -nonanoates partly overlapped. The complete separation of the mixtures could not be achieved, however, on Carbowax 20M, in spite of the use of various operating conditions. The …

Photocatalytic oxidation of phenol on TiO2 powders. A Fourier transform infrared study

Abstract In the present paper a detailed investigation of a well known photoreaction, i.e. phenol photodegradation in the presence of TiO2, has been carried out. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) technique has been used to characterize the catalyst surface and to follow the photoprocess by “in situ” measurements in a gas—solid regime, simulating the aqueous liquid—solid regime in which this photodegradation reaction has been usually carried out. Molecular simulation studies of water physisorption in zeolites

We report a series of Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations of water adsorption in NaY and NaX faujasite, as well as in silicalite-1. Computed adsorption isotherms and heats of adsorption were in good agreement with the available experiments. The existence of cyclic water hexamers in NaX located in the 12-ring windows, recently disclosed by neutron diffraction experiments (Hunger et al., J. Phys. Chem. B, 2006, 110, 342-353) was reproduced in our simulations. Interestingly enough, such cyclic hexamer clusters were also observed in the case of NaY, in which no stabilizing cation is present in the 12-ring window. Spectral studies of zinc octacarboxyphthalocyanine aggregation

The association of zinc octacarboxyphthalocyanine, was studied using UV–vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy; the effects of dye concentration, pH and solvents on spectra were discussed. Calculations showed that the dye dimerized in aqueous solutions ranging from 5.0 × 10−7 to 5.0 × 10−5 mol/dm3, at 25 °C. The dimerization constant of 106 dm3/mol and the spectral Q band shift of 1185 cm−1 imparted by dimerization indicated strong π–π interactions between phthalocyanine molecules. Origin of peak asymmetry and the effect of temperature on solute retention in enantiomer separations on imprinted chiral stationary phases

Abstract In enantiomer separations of d - and l -phenylalanine anlilide ( d,l -PA) on l -PA-imprinted chiral stationary phases (CSPs), the use of an aqueous buffer-organic solvent mixture as mobile phase resulted in improved column efficiency compared with what has previously been observed using mobile phases containing acetic acid as modifier. The dependence of the chromatographic parameters on flow-rate and sample load was studied. A strong dependence of the asymmetry factor ( A s ) of the l -form on sample load and a weak dependence on flow-rate indicate that the non-linear adsorption isotherm is the main reason for the broad peaks observed in this system. The electrochemical properties of Y zeolite-associated MnIII(salen)N3 (salen = trans-(R,R)-1,2-bis(salicyldeneamino)cyclohexane) has been investigated using polymer film electrodes immersed into neutral aqueous solutions. Zeolite Y-associated Mn(III)−salen complexes are reduced in one-electron reversible process at −0.25 V versus SCE.
