First observational evidence for the CO2-driven origin of Stromboli's major explosions
2011
Abstract. We report on the first detection of CO2 flux precursors of the till now unforecastable "major" explosions that intermittently occur at Stromboli volcano (Italy). An automated survey of the crater plume emissions in the period 2006–2010, during which 12 such explosions happened, demonstrated that these events are systematically preceded by a brief phase of increasing CO2/SO2 weight ratio (up to >40) and CO2 flux (>1300 t d−1) with respect to the time-averaged values of 3.7 and ~500 t d−1 typical for standard Stromboli's activity. These signals are best explained by the accumulation of CO2-rich gas at a discontinuity of the plumbing system (decreasing CO2 emission at the surfa…
Acid-Base Properties of 2:1 Clays. I. Modeling the Role of Electrostatics
2010
We present a theoretical investigation of the titratable charge of clays with various structural charge (sigma(b)): pyrophyllite (sigma(b) = 0 e x nm(-2)), montmorillonite (sigma(b) = -0.7 e x nm(-2)) and illite (sigma(b) = -1.2 e x nm(-2)). The calculations were carried out using a Monte Carlo method in the Grand Canonical ensemble and in the framework of the primitive model. The clay particle was modeled as a perfect hexagonal platelet, with an "ideal" crystal structure. The only fitting parameters used are the intrinsic equilibrium constants (pK(0)) for the protonation/deprotonation reactions of the broken-bond sites on the lateral faces of the clay particles, silanol, =SiO(-) + H(+) --=…
Geochemical data and zircon ages for rocks in a high-pressure belt of Chu-Yili Mountains, southern Kazakhstan: Implications for the earliest stages o…
2011
Abstract The mechanism and age of Palaeozoic accretion in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt remain poorly constrained. One of the most complex belts extends from the Kokchetav area in northern Kazakhstan to the Kyrgyz northern Tianshan. It represents an assemblage of small blocks with Palaeoproterozoic continental crust, intervening slivers containing early Palaeozoic ophiolites and/or deep-marine sediments, and a number of HP and UHP metamorphic complexes. The HP–LT metamorphic rocks provide important clues for reconstructions of the overall structure and evolution of the accretionary collage. This study is aimed to constrain the metamorphic age and tectonic implications of HP garnet pyroxen…
Ubendian basement and its late Mesoproterozoic and early Neoproterozoic structural and metamorphic overprint in northeastern Zambia
2004
The Palaeoproterozoic basement in the Muyombe and Luwumbu River areas of northeastern Zambia comprises a WNW‐ESE (to E‐W) trending cordierite‐garnet‐sillimanite granulite unit with numerous enderbite bodies and an amphibolite-facies migmatite unit. Zircons from a biotite metatonalite intruding the granulites were dated at 1960.7±0.4 Ma, and this is time-equivalent with the Nyika granite in adjacent Malawi. Mesoproterozoic intrusions into this basement are represented by a nepheline syenite at Mivula Hill (zircon age: 1360.1±0.8 Ma) and the porphyritic Ntendele biotite metagranite (zircon age: 1329.1±0.6 Ma). The Ntendele granite attains plutonic dimensions north of Muyombe. The Mesoproteroz…
A comparison of deontic matrices, maps and activity diagrams for the construction of situational methods
2007
Several approaches have been proposed to support situational method engineering (SME), each of them providing different techniques and using different basic concepts. In this work, we propose a framework for comparing SME approaches based on a generic SME process model. Three approaches are presented and compared by using this framework.
The electronic spectrum of pyrrole
1999
The electronic spectrum of pyrrole has been investigated by performing calculations using a hierarchy of coupled-cluster models consisting of CCS, CC2, CCSD, and CC3. Basis-set effects have been investigated by carrying out calculations using correlation-consistent basis sets augmented with functions especially designed for the description of Rydberg states. Oscillator strengths, excited state dipole moments, and second moments of the electronic charge distributions have been used to characterize the electronic transitions and final states. Structures and vibrational frequencies have been calculated for a few selected states, and the importance of distinguishing between vertical and adiabat…
An adaptive-PCA algorithm for reflectance estimation from color images
2008
This paper deals with the problem of spectral reflectance estimation from color camera outputs. Because the reconstruction of such functions is an inverse problem, stabilizing the reconstruction process is highly desirable. One way to do this is to decompose reflectance function on a basis functions like PCA. The present work proposes an algorithm making PCA adaptive in reflectance estimation from a color camera output. We propose to adapt the PCA basis derivation by selecting, for each sample, the more relevant elements from the training set elements. The adaptivity criterion is achieved by a likelihood measurement. Finally, the spectral reflectance estimation results are evaluated with th…
Reflectance-based surface saliency
2017
In this paper, we propose an original methodology allowing the computation of the saliency maps for high dimensional RTI data (Reflectance Transformation Imaging). Unlike most of the classical methods, our approach aims at devising an intrinsic visual saliency of the surface, independent of the sensor (image) and the geometry of the scene (light-object-camera). From RTI data, we use the DMD (Discrete Modal Decomposition) technique for the angular reflectance reconstruction, which we extend by a new transformation on the modal basis enabling a rotation-invariant representation of reconstructed reflectances. This orientation-invariance of the resulting reflectance shapes fosters a robust esti…
Some Effects of Individual Learning on the Evolution of Sensors
2001
In this paper, we present an abstract model of sensor evolution, where sensor development is only determined by artificial evolution and the adaptation of agent reactions is accomplished by individual learning. With the environment cast into a MDP framework, sensors can be conceived as a map from environmental states to agent observations and Reinforcement Learning algorithms can be utilised. On the basis of a simple gridworld scenario, we present some results of the interaction between individual learning and evolution of sensors.
