Developmental dyslexia: Visual abnormalities during ocular rotation

2005

Purpose: Most of the studies dealing with visual perception disabilities in children suffering from developmental dyslexia have been done in orthophoric position. The objective of the present study is to explore the visual perception during eye movements. Methods: Sixty male patients (11.8 ± 1.8 years) were examined by neuropsychologists to evaluate reading difficulties. Visual perception during ocular rotation was assessed with a Clement Clarke synoptophore with G3–G4 slides, in primary gaze, then laterally at 20, 30 and 40° in dim light. Results: Three main abnormalities were found. • Isolated perception abnormalities with intermittent shading of the image, central, p…

Sedimentology and vertebrate fossils of the Frasnian Ogre Formation, Gurova outcrops, eastern Latvia

2020

Combined sedimentological and palaeontological study of the siliciclastic sequence of the Ogre Formation in the easternmost area of its distribution in Latvia was aimed at the facies analysis of the deposits and at detailed observation of the taxonomical and taphonomical peculiarities of the fossil vertebrate assemblage. Two facies associations, tidally-influenced fluvial channels and lateral tidal bars, have been identified in exposures along the Gurova River. Sedimentological evidences suggest that the studied deposits were formed in the fluvial environment with strong tidal influence. The sedimentary concentrations of vertebrate remains, dominated by the antiarch Bothriolepis maxima, por…

Depositional environment of the tidally-dominated transgressive succession: Rēzekne and Pärnu regional stages, Baltic devonian basin

2013

Exploiting Data Analytics and Deep Learning Systems to Support Pavement Maintenance Decisions

2021

Road networks are critical infrastructures within any region and it is imperative to maintain their conditions for safe and effective movement of goods and services. Road Management, therefore, plays a key role to ensure consistent efficient operation. However, significant resources are required to perform necessary maintenance activities to achieve and maintain high levels of service. Pavement maintenance can typically be very expensive and decisions are needed concerning planning and prioritizing interventions. Data are key towards enabling adequate maintenance planning but in many instances, there is limited available information especially in small or under-resourced urban road authorit…

La suprema giurisdizione nella Sardegna moderna. Travagli della Real Audiencia (1564-1651)

2019

The institution of the Real Audiencia in the kingdom of Sardinia since the 1560s is part of a wider process which saw the rise and development of royal supreme courts of justice in several European countries of the early modern period. In fact, major State formation processes all around Europe required that monarchs increased their control on local authorities and that new increasingly centralised systems of judicial review gained precedence over all particular jurisdictions, feudal as well as municipal. This brought about a dramatic transformation in the field of criminal law enforcement and administration of justice.

Revisiting the Solid Flux Theory

2022

Several variations of the basic activated sludge process and of the related design procedures for final clarifiers have been developed, which are frequently based on the well-known solid flux theory (SFT). In this paper, by using the Lambert W function and a “virtual” solid flux corresponding to the Vesilind parameters’ ratio, the SFT is reformulated, and dimensionless groups are detected, which highly reduce the number of parameters that are involved in the final clarifiers’ design procedure. The derived dimensionless relationships and the corresponding plots have general validity since they can be applied to all the possible design/verification parameter combinatio…

Empirical Study on the Relationship between the Cross-Correlation among Stocks and the Stocks' Volatility Clustering

2013

In this paper we discuss univariate and multivariate statistical properties of volatility with the aim of understanding how these two aspects are interrelated. Specifically, we focus on the relationship between the cross-correlation among stock's volatilities and the volatility clustering. Volatility clustering is related to the memory property of the volatility time-series and therefore to its predictability. Our results show that there exists a relationship between the level of predictability of any volatility time-series and the amount of its inter-dependence with other assets. In all considered cases, the more the asset is linked to other assets, the more its volatility keeps memory of …

Flexible space-time process for seismic data

2009

Point processes are well studied objects in probability theory and a powerful tool in statistics for modelling and analyzing the distribution of real phenomena, such as the seismic one. Point processes can be specified mathematically in several ways, for instance, by considering the joint distributions of the counts of points in arbitrary sets or defining a complete intensity function. The conditional intensity function is a function of the point history and it is itself a stochastic process depending on the past up to time t. In this paper some techniques to estimate the intensity function of space-time point processes are developed, by following semi-parametric approaches and diagnostic m…

Chemical Composition and Free Radical Scavenging Activity of the Essential Oil of Achillea ligustica Growing Wild in Lipari (Aeolian Islands, Sicily)

2013

In the present study the chemical composition of the essential oils from aerial parts and flowers of Achillea ligustica All., collected in Lipari (Aeolian Islands) was evaluated by GC and GC-MS. ( Z)-Chrysanthenyl acetate was the most abundant component of both oils (29.6% in A1 and 27.8% in F1), followed by viridiflorol (16.8% in A1 and 21.6% in F1), bornyl acetate (8.7% in A1 and 11.6% in F1) and 1,8-cineole (7.4% in A1 and 9.3% in F1). A comparison was made of the composition of the different populations studied so far. Futhermore, the free radical scavenging activity of the oil was determined by DPPH and ABTS methods.
