Special Issue “Smart Urban Lighting Systems”
2020
The design and operation of multifunctional infrastructures for public lighting as well as their impact on the urban environment and citizens’ life is today of great interest. The cost of energy for public lighting is often an issue for the budget of municipalities. Furthermore, researchers’ and designers’ attention is increasingly focused on aspects of public lighting not directly valuable through economic factors. Starting from the “quality” of the light environment, looking at citizens’ visual comfort, the light has to be considered as an instrument to improve the urban context and objects therein (including buildings). Indeed, urban degradation (lack of infrastructures, maintenance, ser…
Evolution of the Amygdala in Vertebrates
2007
The main aim of this article is to identify the homologues of the different components of the mammalian amygdala in the cerebral hemispheres of non-mammals using, primarily, a topological/embryological perspective. Thus, we first consider two main divisions of the amygdala of mammals, namely the pallial and subpallial (striatopallidal) amygdala. The pallial amygdala includes derivatives of both the lateral and ventral embryonic pallium that in the adult conform layered, superficial areas usually called cortical amygdala, and deep nuclei that conform the basolateral division of the amygdala plus the amygdalohippocampal area (AHA). The components of the subpallial amygdala are usually grouped…
Sequence and context for the Cocina cave neolithic pottery: An approach from social networks analysis
2023
Cocina cave has been considered one of the main sites when explaining the transition from Mesolithic to Neolithic in the Iberian Mediterranean façade. But the current review of its stratigraphy has evidenced important post-depositional disturbances affecting those layers where Neolithic pottery is present. These taphonomic problems question the usefulness of this record in any detailed approach to a potential process of acculturation of the local Mesolithic groups. Despite this negative preservation, and using decorative traits as a proxy, we have isolated two ceramic contexts with inner coherence. Over these contexts, we have developed a Bayesian approach to compare them with other well-da…
Horse exploitation at the Late Upper Palaeolithic site of Oelknitz (Thuringia, Germany) with special reference to canine modifications
2012
Abstract The faunal assemblage from Structure 5 of the Magdalenian settlement Oelknitz (Thuringia, Germany) was analyzed. The fauna is dominated by horse. All stages of butchery from skinning to marrow extraction were performed within the horse assemblage. In addition to this, various stages of organic artifact production could be documented. Two fragmentary equid canine teeth were of particular interest. They are the only documented canines from Structure 5, which otherwise contained a large amount of teeth. Both canines show traces of human modification. They were cut out of the jaw while still in the alveole. On both canines, lateral incisions were performed at the cervix dentis and the …
Special Issue of Journal of Manufacturing Processes on Advancing Manufacturing Processes Research at NAMRC 46
2018
During the refereeing process of papers submitted to NAMRC 46 this year, nine high-quality papers have been selected and fast-tracked to a special issue of Journal of Manufacturing Processes (JMP) entitled “Advancing Manufacturing Processes Research at NAMRC 46”. The selection of the fast-track papers was based on authors’ preferences, quality of the papers, reviewers’ recommendations, Track Chairs’ picks, pre-selection by the Chair of NAMRI/SME Scientific Committee, and final approval by the JMP Editor. The nine papers published in JMP are therefore excluded from the Proceedings of NAMRC 46 in Procedia Manufacturing. Nevertheless, these papers are presented in person at NAMRC 46. Details o…

Stochastic Vulnerability Assessment of Masonry Structures: Concepts, Modeling and Restoration Aspects
2019
A methodology aiming to predict the vulnerability of masonry structures under seismic action is presented herein. Masonry structures, among which many are cultural heritage assets, present high vulnerability under earthquake. Reliable simulations of their response to seismic stresses are exceedingly difficult because of the complexity of the structural system and the anisotropic and brittle behavior of the masonry materials. Furthermore, the majority of the parameters involved in the problem such as the masonry material mechanical characteristics and earthquake loading characteristics have a stochastic-probabilistic nature. Within this framework, a detailed analytical methodological approac…
Comparison of approaches for generation of fully non-stationary artificial accelerograms
2019
The modelling of the seismic input is a critical aspect when non-linear time-history analyses (NLTHAs) are carried out. As a matter of fact, seismic response of structures is very sensitive to the input excitation time history. The present work aims to highlight the differences in the input modelling and the assessment of seismic response of three r.c. structures employing four generation methods of fully non-stationary artificial accelerogram sets at a given construction site. For each method, seven accelerograms are generated and employed to perform NLTHAs on three r.c. structures having irregular mass and stiffness distributions. The original contribution of the paper relies in the crite…
Prediction of surface treatment effects on the tribological performance of tool steels using artificial neural networks
2019
The present paper discussed the development of a reliable and robust artificial neural network (ANN) capable of predicting the tribological performance of three highly alloyed tool steel grades. Experimental results were obtained by performing plane-contact sliding tests under non-lubrication conditions on a pin-on-disk tribometer. The specimens were tested both in untreated state with different hardening levels, and after surface treatment of nitrocarburizing. We concluded that wear maps via ANN modeling were a user-friendly approach for the presentation of wear-related information, since they easily permitted the determination of areas under steady-state wear that were appropriate for use…
Dynamiques urbaines en Asie du Sud-Est
2014
