Argon plasma coagulation in the treatment of post-radiotherapy rectal bleeding
2012
Introduction: Chronic radiation proctitis is often associated to radiotherapy for treatment of pelvic cancer. The most common side effect of this pathological condition is rectal bleeding but despite the great number of clinical approaches and techniques that have been employed no consensus for the management of it is available. Although prospective randomized trials about hemorrhagic radiation proctitis are still lacking, endoscopic approach delivering an Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC) seems to be a successful and available option. Patients and Methods: Sixteen patients suffering from post-radiotherapy rectal bleeding were followed. In the nine cases presenting a rectum ulcerative colitis …

Proctitis and constipation: A symptom of food allergy?
2015
Abstract Allergic proctitis can occur in infants and children. It is expressed by feces streaked with blood without other apparent signs. More than 50% of these patients are being breast-fed. Recently, it has been found that a particular symptom of allergic proctitis is constipation, and it is a major cause of consultations in pediatric gastroenterology departments. We carried out a study, which included a series of patients who were seen for chronic constipation that had not responded to the usual therapy. We found that the majority of these patients had a reduction in the layer of mucus coating the rectum, and this sign was associated with intolerance to cow's milk protein and also to oth…
ANTINFLAMMATORY EFFECT OF LEVORAG (THD) EMULGEL ON RADIATION PROCTOCOLITIS AROUND A COLO-ANAL ANASTOMOSIS: AN INNOVATIVE CASE REPORT
2020
Post-radiation proctitis (PRP) is one of most common complications after abdominal and pelvic radiotherapy for different malignancies. Chronic radiation proctitis (CRP) usually develops 90 days or more after radiation. The present study aimed to show the employment of Levorag Emulgel® (THD S.p.A Correggio, Reggio-Emilia, Italy) as off-label topical treatment, by instillation, to resolve the acute phase of PRP around a coloanal anastomosis, in a patient undergone surgery for an adenocarcinoma of the low rectum, then treated with the Gatekeeper® methodic to resolve fecal incontinence as consequence of the first surgical rectal resection. In conclusion, we can affirm that our methodic could re…
