Appropriate technology in a Solovian nonlinear growth model

We propose a Solovian growth model with a convex-concave production function and international technological spillovers. We test the empirical implications of the model, analysing the effects of the productivity slowdown that followed the oil shocks of the 1970s. We argue that this slowdown, altering the world income distribution, affected the pattern of international technological spillovers, taking the poorest countries further away from the technological leaders, and therefore unable to exploit their technologies. The result is the emergence of a poverty trap for low-income countries.

Wastewaters generated by crude oil extraction processes, called “produced waters” (PWs), are complex solutions that contain organic compounds, mainly hydrocarbons, and often exhibit high salinity. The large amounts of PWs represent a global issue because of their environmental impact. An approach widely used in the oil industry is the reinjection of this wastewater into the extraction wells after a suitable treatment. This study is based on an inventory of iron knives dated from the 8th to the 5th centuries BC and discovered in funerary and settlement sites in the South-West of France. The corpus consists of 608 artefacts. We established a typology allowing us to present a chronological and spatial distribution of each type. We then tried to determine the functions of the knives according to their type and their length. For those discovered in graves other objects in the grave assemblage were used as an additional criterion. When the funerary context was very clearly defined, we tried to determine the function, in the grave itself, of the knives.

An extensive economics and regional science literature has discussed the importance of social capital for economic growth and development. Yet, what social capital is and how it is formed are elusive issues, which require further investigation. Here, we refer to social capital in terms of “civic” capital and “good culture,” as rephrased by Guiso, Sapienza, and Zingales and Tabellini. Centrality-Dependent Modification of Jet-Production Rates in Deuteron-Gold Collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV

Jet production rates are measured in p þ p and d þ Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV recorded in 2008 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Jets are reconstructed using the R ¼ 0.3 anti-kt algorithm from energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and charged tracks in multiwire proportional chambers, and the jet transverse momentum (pT ) spectra are corrected for the detector response. Spectra are reported for jets with 12 < pT < 50 GeV=c, within a pseudorapidity acceptance of jηj < 0.3. The nuclear-modification factor (RdAu) values for 0%–100% d þ Au events are found to be consistent with unity, constraining the role of initial state effects on jet product…
Measurement of the production of charm jets tagged with D0 mesons in pp collisions at √s = 5.02 and 13 TeV

The measurement of the production of charm jets, identified by the presence of a D0 meson in the jet constituents, is presented in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 5.02 and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The D0 mesons were reconstructed from their hadronic decay D0 → K−π + and the respective charge conjugate. Jets were reconstructed from D0 -meson candidates and charged particles using the anti-kT algorithm, in the jet transverse momentum range 5 < pT,chjet < 50 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |ηjet| < 0.9 − R, and with the jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6. Effect of different co-solvents on biodiesel production from various low-cost feedstocks using Sr–Al double oxides

The main objective of the present paper comprises the investigation of biodiesel production from low-cost feedstock such as lard oil and waste cooking oil (WCO) using Sr-Al double oxides. Nanocatalyst was characterised FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, BET and XPS. The Sr:Al with 3:1 molar ratio showed the best catalytic activity in the conversion of both oils to fatty acid methyl ester. The effect of acetone and tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a co-solvent for transesterification were compared and the best result was obtained with 5 % THF.
