Manifattura Tabacchi

2015

L'edificio…

Artificial Neural Networks to assess energy and environmental performance of buildings: An Italian case study

2019

Abstract Approximately 40% of the European energy consumption and a large proportion of environmental impacts are related to the building sector. However, the selection of adequate and correct designs can provide considerable energy savings and reduce environmental impacts. To achieve this objective, a simultaneous energy and environmental assessment of a building's life cycle is necessary. To date, the resolution of this complex problem is entrusted to numerous software and calculation algorithms that are often complex to use. They involve long diagnosis phases and are characterised by the lack of a common language. Despite the efforts by the scientific community in the building sector, th…

Recent Development on Self-Cleaning Cementitious Coatings

2013

The recent improvements in nano-technologies applied to building coatings are reported, starting from the historical origins of the research on photocatalysis. The description of the main air pollutants and the chemical mechanism of photocatalysis introduce to self-cleaning surfaces and the super-hydrophilic and hydrophobic attitude. Self-cleaning cementitious surfaces, due to nano-structured photocatalysts, mainly titanium dioxide, show environmental benefit in reduction of air pollutants and many experimental evidences are reported together with several applications on building construction. International standards and main spectroscopic techniques aim to evaluate the benefit in terms of …

Photocatalytic properties of cement-based plasters and paints, containing mineral pigments

2010

Innovative cement-based pre-mix products, for surface coating of buildings, possessing photocatalytic activity, arouse great interest due to achievable results in terms of reduction of the air pollution and in the maintenance of aesthetics. The photoactivity is induced by the presence of a photocatalyst, titanium dioxide, which can accelerate the oxidation processes of air pollutants, particularly nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), mainly produced by incomplete combustion of fuel and present in urban environment through the exhaust gases of motor vehicles. The surfaces which are coated with these products acquire a self-cleaning characteristic (maintenance of origin…

Ceramica da cucina dalla "Zona Mura" a Marsala. Le importazioni africane

2014

Object of this written are African cooking ware pieces found during the excavations of the so-called “Zona Mura” in the Archaeological Park of Marsala. Supported by the Soprintendenza BB.CC.AA. of Trapani, research in collaboration with the Universities of Hamburg and Palermo on the topic of “Lilybaeum Archaeological Project” are still in course of making. The stratified kitchen pottery considered was carried out nearby the fortifications’ north-west sector, which showed the remains of structures of Roman age that probably belong to some fortification walls and also to three insulae set in the southern part of the surveyed area. The dynamic pattern of relations between ceramics of different…
