Diabetes Mellitus and Ramadan: Physiopathological, Clinical and Therapeutic Aspects

2017

Fasting from dawn to sunset during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus are predisposed to major metabolic risks. Another problem is the reluctance of diabetic patients in taking their medications during the fast; therefore the timing and the dosage of anti-diabetic drugs must be adapted for each patient. It is important for diabetic patients who wish to fast during …

Personalised Medicine in National Cancer Plans: How Can Innovation Be Translated Into Policy?

2014

ABSTRACT Stratified, precision or personalised medicine (PM) is emerging as one of the most important areas of clinical innovation in cancer care. Yet, implementing policies to translate these innovations to practice entails deep changes, including in how patient information is treated, how funding is allocated, how diagnostic tests are validated and carried out, how care is organised, how clinical trials are conducted and how new drugs are approved. National Cancer Control Programmes (NCCPs), for their part, have emerged as the primary instrument to coordinate the range of cancer control policies within individual countries, and virtually all European countries have adopted one. This means…

Re-Thinking the Use of Conscientious Objection by Health Professionals: A Regulatory Proposal Based on Legal Abortion Practices in Argentina

2019

“Ninety percent of health-care practitioners will not perform abortions,” warned physicians in Chaco, a province in north-eastern Argentina, during the debate in Argentina’s Senate to extend the legalization of abortion in July 2018. Around this same time, in a nearby province, Misiones, every physician in one hospital declared that they would register as conscientious objectors should the legislation prove successful.
