Professionalization as Status Adaptation: The Nobility, the Bureaucracy, and the Modernization of the Legal Profession in Finland

1991

In contrast to Anglo-American lines of professional development, the central agent of professionalization in many Continental countries was the state bureaucracy. The importance of the legal profession initially to the state bureaucracy, and subsequently to the nobility, explains its social prominence and its future development. An …

The views of English and Finnish teachers concerning the ways in which changes in practice, pay and working conditions affected their perception of teaching as a profession are contrasted. The crucial factors discouraging teachers from remaining in teaching were work intensification, low pay, deteriorating pupil behaviour and a …

Fascist Unionization and the Professionalization of Midwives in Italy: A Sicilian Case Study

1994

In the 19th century, Italian midwives (then called levatrice) began to organize in an attempt to resist encroachments being made on their practice by obstetricians. Licensed midwives formed professional societies, organized national congresses, and published journals. By the fascist period (1922–43), with the foundation of the first national state-sanctioned union and the institution of an obligatory professional register (Albo), midwifery achieved the status of a recognized profession. The professionalizing practices of midwives, however, combined with a new state interest in their activities and a broader role for the medical profession in defining the proper place of midwives, held Itali…
