ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF SHORT-TERM DECISIONS IN WINEGROWING FARMS

The majority of small sized Sicilian winegrowing farms are placed in the first part of the supply chain. In this way they are subjected to the grapes prices fixed by the wineries, becoming price takers. This situation determines marginal revenues lower than average costs and in short-term a reduction of farmer income that it can allow to farm bankruptcy. In this context farmer should adopt economic strategies in order to obtain higher profit in a more and more competitive market. The aim of this paper is to understand whether, decreasing labor cost in short-term by means of process innovation, average costs of small sized Sicilian winegrowing farm do not exceed marginal revenues.

The proitability of microalgae biomass farming in Mediterranean environments

The aims of the present study was to assess the economic sustainability of microalgae cultivation in PBRs, ascertain in what conditions of productivity and price it is possible to achieve similar results to those of the irst case, and assess the impact that the results of plant management could have on the balance sheets of farms which may have an interest in expanding their production. Our results show shows that, while prospects are encouraging, there is a need to develop structured supply chains able to confer greater stability to the market and to ensure a higher degree of certainty to stakeholders.

Yield and profitability of modified spanish bush and Y-trellis training systems for peach

Peach trees trained to modified Spanish bush (MSB) and Y-trellis (Y) were evaluated and compared in the Mediterranean settings of Southern Italy. The observations included two peach (Rich May and Summer Rich) and two nectarine (Big Bang and Nectaross) cultivars. In the MSB system, trees were spaced at 4.5 x 2.5 m (888 trees/ha), whereas in the Y system, trees were spaced at 5.5 x 2 m (909 trees/ha). Costs at planting, yield per tree, fruit size grade, unit price of sold peaches for each size grade, amount and cost of materials and labor for cultural management, and grower's profit were quantified throughout all six years from planting and at full crop (year 4-6). The settlement on Profitis Ilias and Armi Hills, located 500 m east of Gortyn acropolis, probably developed at the end of the Bronze age and was abandoned at the secondhalf of 7th century BC. Is constitutes a very important point of observation to reconstruct the complex dinamics of Gortyn's region, between the end of the Minoan culture and the Birth of the polis. The excavations, on yhe high Southern slopes of Profitis Ilias hill, involved a partof the built-up area dated to 8th - 7th century BC, set on terraces and crossed by an East-West Street.
