Mercury and chlorinated hydrocarbons in zoobenthos of Lake Päijänne, Finland

1979

The average amounts of mercury, PCBs, and sigma DDT (primarily DDE), found in macrozoobenthos, on the wet basis, in Lake Päijänne, Finland, for the time period 1972-1974, were 79 ng/g, 29 ng/g, and 8 ng/g, respectively. Lindane was found in negligible amounts in only 2% of the samples examined; aldrin was present in 10% of the samples; no dieldrin was detected. Mercury and PCB concentrations varied regionally in the lake. PCB and sigma DDT concentrations were greater in the predatory bottom animals than in the herbivores or detritus feeders, and the amounts of chlorinated hydrocarbons were greater in profundal animals than in littoral animals. No significant correlation was apparent between…

Paleoenvironmental evolution of the Pliocene Villarroya Lake, northern Spain. A multidisciplinary approach

2002

The Pliocene Villarroya basin fill consists of lacustrine and alluvial deposits over 100 m thick. The lacustrine deposits, up to 30 m thick, comprise three sequences. The two lower sequences consist of profundal, laminated deposits formed by mostly terrigenous facies that are overlain by charophytic carbonates and varves. The uppermost, third sequence made up of massive bioturbated mudstones corresponds to a very shallow lacustrine-palustrine environment. Bulk mineralogy comprises carbonates, clay minerals, quartz and feldspars. The carbonates are: exogenic, biogenic calcite and biogenic aragonite. Biogenic calcite constitutes ostracod shells and charophyte stem encrustations, whereas arago…

Spatial and temporal variation in denitrification and in the denitrifier community in a boreal lake

2011

We investigated the spatial and temporal variation in denitrification rates (isotopepairing technique, IPT) and in the denitrifier community (examination of gene nirK by denaturinggradient gel electrophoresis [DGGE] of microbial DNA) in the sediments of a boreal, clear-water, eutrophic lake using samples collected from shallow littoral, deep littoral and shallow profundal sediments during early summer, mid-summer, autumn and winter. The measured denitrification rates (44 to 613 μmol N m−2 d−1) are among the lowest ever reported from lacustrine sediments. Denitri fi cation rates varied both spatially and temporally, being highest in the profundal zone during midsummer and in the littoral zon…

Dietary plasticity of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) facilitates coexistence with competitively superior European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus)

2011

–  Habitat use and diet of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) coexisting with European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) and grayling (Thymallus thymallus) were studied in one deep and two relatively shallow subarctic lakes in northern Norway. Stomach content and stable isotope analyses revealed clear and temporally stable resource partitioning between the species in all three lakes. Arctic charr had a wide and flexible trophic niche and was the only piscivorous species. In contrast, whitefish and grayling had remarkably stable planktivorous and benthivorous niches, respectively. In the deepest lake, Arctic charr together with grayling mainly utilised littoral benthos, while piscivory was more…

Spatial community concordance of summer phytoplankton and profundal macroinvertebrates in boreal lakes

2014

Reliance of profundal benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages on epilimnetic algal production — a key element of pelagic–benthic coupling — is a well-recognized phenomenon in the literature but the details are still poorly understood. In particular, the importance of taxonomic composition of algal communities and associated qualitative aspects of the settling material to benthic invertebrates is poorly known. We addressed this issue by investigating concordance of summer phytoplankton and profundal macroinvertebrate community composition using data from 47 boreal lakes. We examined community variation and environmental correlates of phytoplankton and macroinvertebrates with nonmetric multidi…

Diversity of meiofauna in the lacustrine profundal zone: Bathymetric differences and influence of environmental factors

1993

The diversity and species richness of total meiofauna, Harpacticoida and Oligochaeta in relation to depth and other environmental variables were studied at nine stations and in two profundal depth zones in Lake Paijanne which includes both oligotrophic and eutrophicated or organically loaded areas.

Recent environmental history of a large, originally oligotrophic lake in Finland: a palaeolimnological study of chironomid remains

1993

The sedimentary chironomid stratigraphy in short-core samples covering approx. the past 150 years was studied in the northernmost basin of Lake Paijanne, southern Finland (62° 11′ N, 25° 48′ E). The basin has received effluent loading from the wood-processing industry and municipal waste water. Four developmental stages were distinguished based on the changes in chironomid assemblages: 1. Pre-industrial stage (dated by the210Pb method as covering approximately the period 1838–1936), 2. Stage of increasing pollution (approx. 1944–1973), 3. The ‘black decade’, or the period of worst pollution (approx. 1973–1983), and 4. Water protection stage (approx. 1983 onwards). During the first stage the…

Can lake restoration by fish removal improve the status of profundal macroinvertebrate assemblages?

2013

Summary Removal of fish to restore lake pelagic food webs and water quality has been shown to increase the abundance of benthic invertebrates in shallow areas due to decreased predation pressure, while responses of profundal macroinvertebrate assemblages are less well documented. We used multivariate analyses and a Before-After-Control-Impact design to assess the impacts of fish removal (in total 101 000 kg of percid and cyprinid fish) on profundal macroinvertebrate species composition and abundance and ecological status in two basins of a eutrophic boreal lake. In the deeper main basin, macroinvertebrate community composition and classification of ecological status were not affected by fis…

Inter-annual variation in macroinvertebrate communities in a shallow forest lake in eastern Finland during 1990–2001

2003

As a part of the Integrated Monitoring (IM) Programme of Air Pollution Effects on Ecosystems, the macroinvertebrate community of a pristine forest lake was monitored from 1990 up to the present. Lake Iso Hietajarvi is a small and shallow, weakly stratified oligotrophic headwater lake situated in Patvinsuo National Park, eastern Finland. Benthic macroinvertebrates were sampled annually, once in autumn at depths of 3 - 4 m (sublittoral zone) and at 7 m (profundal zone). The water quality of the lake and meteorological characteristics in the area were monitored during the same period. The inter-annual variation in macroinvertebrate abundance and taxonomic composition in the lake unaffected by …

Effects of temperature and sediment properties on benthic CO2production in an oligotrophic boreal lake

2010

Summary 1. Temperature and many other physical and chemical factors affecting CO2 production in lake sediments vary significantly both seasonally and spatially. The effects of temperature and sediment properties on benthic CO2 production were studied in in situ and in vitro experiments in the boreal oligotrophic Lake Paajarvi, southern Finland. 2. In in situ experiments, temperature of the water overlying the shallow littoral sediment varied seasonally between 0.5 and 15.7 °C, but in deep water (≥20 m) the range was only 1.1–6.6 °C. The same exponential model (r2 = 0.70) described the temperature dependence at 1.2, 10 and 20 m depths. At 2.5 and 5 m depths, however, the slopes of the two re…
