Maintenance Planning For The Reliability Maximization In A Large System With Vagueness In The Reliability Values Of Some Components
2015
This paper tackles the problem to single out the maintenance actions to be executed on a production system during the planned stop of given length. In detail, from a reliability viewpoint the system is assimilated as a series-parallel multi-component system and the maintenance actions need to maximize the system reliability up to the next planned stop. Moreover, it is assumed that some components reliability values are affected by vagueness within a given range. To solve the considered problem, an exact dynamic programming algorithm suitable to quickly point out the maintenance scheduling is developed and, moreover, it is formulated a proper parameter able to express the robustness of the o…
Flexibility of grid interactive water heaters: The situation in the US
2023
Among different solutions to increase flexibility of electricity system, grid interactive water heaters (GIWHs) can make a large contribution, against a relatively low cost. They can advantageously be used within a single building, a local energy community or within an entire distribution grid, thanks to the very fast response time, low cost, highly distributed resource and widely demonstrated technology. In the near future, the flexibility potential of GIWHs will certainly increase, thanks to the advantageous flexibility programs that have been implementing in some area of the world, with the aim of coordinating several million of GIWHs with the electricity network. In this study, we asses…
MAC–Engine: a new architecture for executing MAC algorithms on commodity WiFi hardware
2011
In this demo, we prove that the flexibility supported by off–the–shelf IEEE 802.11 hardware can be significantly ex- tended if we move the control of the MAC programming interface from the driver to the firmware, i.e. from the host CPU to the card CPU. To this purpose, we introduce the concept of MAC–Engine, that is an executor of Pro- grammable Finite State Machines (PFSM) implemented at the firmware level: we show how the card itself can support different protocol logics thanks to PFSM bytecode repre- sentations that can be dynamically injected inside the card memory at run-time without incurring in down time issues or network disconnect events. We provide different PFSM examples in order…
Supporting code mobility and dynamic reconfigurations over Wireless MAC Processor Prototype
2014
Mobile networks for Internet Access are a fundamental segment of Internet access net- works, where resource optimization are really critical because of the limited bandwidth availability. While traditionally resource optimizations have been focused on high effi- cient modulation and coding schemes, to be dynamically tuned according to the wireless channel and interference conditions, it has also been shown how medium access schemes can have a significant impact on the network performance according to the application and networking scenarios. This thesis work proposes an architectural solution for supporting Medium Access Con- trol (MAC) reconfigurations in terms of dynamic programming and c…
Efficient FPGA Implementation of a Knowledge-Based Automatic Speech Classifier
2005
Speech recognition has become common in many application domains, from dictation systems for professional practices to vocal user interfaces for people with disabilities or hands-free system control. However, so far the performance of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems are comparable to Human Speech Recognition (HSR) only under very strict working conditions, and in general far lower. Incorporating acoustic-phonetic knowledge into ASR design has been proven a viable approach to rise ASR accuracy. Manner of articulation attributes such as vowel, stop, fricative, approximant, nasal, and silence are examples of such knowledge. Neural networks have already been used successfully as dete…
Application of EαNets to Feature Recognition of Articulation Manner in Knowledge-Based Automatic Speech Recognition
2006
Speech recognition has become common in many application domains. Incorporating acoustic-phonetic knowledge into Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems design has been proven a viable approach to rise ASR accuracy. Manner of articulation attributes such as vowel, stop, fricative, approximant, nasal, and silence are examples of such knowledge. Neural networks have already been used successfully as detectors for manner of articulation attributes starting from representations of speech signal frames. In this paper, a set of six detectors for the above mentioned attributes is designed based on the E-αNet model of neural networks. This model was chosen for its capability to learn hidden acti…
A Reconfigurable Neural Environment on Active Networks
2000
This paper proposes the deployment of a neural network computing environment on Active Networks. Active Networks are packet-switched computer networks in which packets can contain code fragments that are executed on the intermediate nodes. This feature allows the injection of small pieces of codes to deal with computer network problems directly into the network core, and the adoption of new computing techniques to solve networking problems. The goal of our project is the adoption of a distributed neural network for approaching tasks which are specific of the computer network environment. Dynamically reconfigurable neural networks are spread on an experimental wide area backbone of active no…
An Embedded Module for Iris Micro-Characteristics Extraction
2009
In this paper a new approach, based on iris micro-characteristics, has been used to make possible an embedded biometric extractor. This recognition approach is based on ophthalmologic studies that have proven the existence of different micro-characteristics as well as fingerprint minutiae. These micro-characteristics are permanent and immutable and they can be used to create strong and robust identification systems.Biometric recognition systems are critical components of our everyday lives. Since such electronic products evolve to software intensive systems, where software, becoming larger, more complex and prevalent, introduces many problems in the development phases. The development of em…
Inferring Business Rules from Natural Language Expressions
2014
This paper proposes a mapping technique for automatically translating rules expressed in a format based on natural language, i.e. Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR) standard, into production rules that can be executed by a computer (i.e. Rule engine). The proposed approach achieves a twofold purpose: on the one hand non IT skilled people (i.e. Domain expert) can effectively focus on business rules definition by using statements in natural language, and on the other hand the IT staff will have to manage business rules in a format ready to be executed by a rule engine. The main goal is to overcome some weaknesses in the software development process that could produce i…
