OWL Orthogonal Extension
2012
It is critical for knowledge bases to capture the reality in direct and intuitive way. OWL ontology language was designed for this goal. In this paper we study the limitations of the OWL open world semantics for the task of knowledge capture and retrieval. We propose a new mechanism based on the closed world semantics that alleviates part of the limitations. Further we describe a system where both OWL and the new mechanisms interoperate together. Finally, we outline some immediate applications and further research directions.
A innovative semi-immergible USV (SI-USV) drone for marine and lakes operations with instrumental telemetry and acoustic data acquisition capability
2015
The proposed project shows the results obtained in the implementation and testing in lacustrine and marine environment of a nautical remote controlled vehicle with surface navigation and innovative features Semi-Immersible (SI-USV). This vehicle is based on a pending patent belonging to Palermo University (Patent Pending RM2012A000209 and RM2012A000209) concerning innovative semi-immersible vehicles (SI-Drone), that can be remotely controlled from the ground, air, satellite and sea also during the semi-immersible operation. The vehicle with electric power is coupled with a jet propulsion, given the low draft, makes it possible to navigate in shallow waters or coastal shipping or sandbars. T…
An Analytic Hierachy Process for Ranking Operating Costs of Low Cost and Full Service Airlines
2009
This paper develops an application of the analytic hierarchy process to rank the operating cost components of full service and low cost airlines. It takes into account the financial balance sheets and answers to a questionnaire submitted to the managers of selected airlines. The results suggest that the analytic hierarchy process can be appropriately used to obtain the ranking of the costs taking into account different views: financial, management and operative. Rental, office equipment and other supplies costs show the highest importance in the cost ranking, both for full services and low cost airlines. The robustness of the results is tested by Monte Carlo analysis.

An academic performance indicator using flexible multi-criteria methods
2021
Composite indicators are a very useful tool for conveying summary information on the overall performance of institutions and facilitating decision-making. Increasingly, there is a demand for indicators that allow performance to be assessed after the implementation of a strategy. This has several difficulties, and in this paper, we address three of them: how to evaluate at different points in time, how to estimate the weighting of the criteria and how to normalize the data. Our proposal is based on multicriteria techniques, using a recent method, uwTOPSIS, and is applied to data collected from 2975 students enrolled in the first year of science and engineering at the Industrial University of…
Transparent boundary condition for acoustic propagation in lined guide with mean flow
2008
A finite element analysis of acoustic radiation in an infinite lined guide with mean flow is studied. In order to bound the domain, transparent boundary conditions are introduced by means of a Dirichlet to Neumann (DtN) operator based on a modal decomposition. This decomposition is easy to carry out in a hard‐walled guide. With absorbant lining, many difficulties occur even without mean flow. Since the eigenvalue problem is no longer selfadjoint, acoustic modes are not orthogonal with respect to the L2‐scalar product. However, an orthogonality relation exists which permits writing the modal decomposition. For a lined guide with uniform mean flow, modes are no longer orthogonal but a new sca…

Eigenvectors of k–ψ-contractive wedge operators
2008
Abstract We present new boundary conditions under which the fixed point index of a strict- ψ -contractive wedge operator is zero. Then we investigate eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of k – ψ -contractive wedge operators.
A pre-processing technique based on the wavelet transform for linear autoassociators with applications to face recognition
1997
In order to improve the performance of a linear autoassociator (which is a neural network model), we explore the use of several preprocessing techniques. The gist of our approach is to store, in addition to the original pattern, one or several pre-processed (i.e. filtered) versions of the patterns to be stored in a neural network. First, we compare the performance of several pre-processing techniques (a plain vanilla version of the autoassociator as a control, a Sobel operator, a Canny-Deriche operator, and a multiscale Canny-Deriche operator) on an example of a pattern completion task using a noise degraded version of a face stored in an autoassociator. We found that the multiscale Canny-D…
Cameras: Forms of Interaction
2010
This essay examines the material design of cameras. The author argues that design plays a central role in the interaction between Operator and Spectator (R. Barthes) and, furthermore, that it entails significant effects on photographic aesthetics. Finally, the author also considers some of the design differences between traditional emulsion cameras and digital cameras.
