Introduction: Purpose and Scope of this Volume, and Some General Comments
2002
In recent years the method of “computer simulation” has started something like a revolution of science: the old division of physics (as well as chemistry, biology, etc.) into “experimental” and “theoretical” branches is no longer really complete. Rather, “computer simulation” has become a third branch complementary to the first two traditional approaches.
Future directions in solid state chemistry: report of the NSF-sponsored workshop
2002
Abstract A long-established area of scientific excellence in Europe, solid state chemistry has emerged in the US in the past two decades as a field experiencing rapid growth and development. At its core, it is an interdisciplinary melding of chemistry, physics, engineering, and materials science, as it focuses on the design, synthesis and structural characterization of new chemical compounds and characterization of their physical properties. As a consequence of this inherently interdisciplinary character, the solid state chemistry community is highly open to the influx of new ideas and directions. The inclusionary character of the field’s culture has been a significant factor in its continu…
Merging Visible-Light-Photoredox and Nickel Catalysis
2015
A new combination: The merging of visible‐light‐photoredox catalysis and nickel catalysis has been successfully achieved for cross‐coupling reactions. The synthetic scope and limitations of the combination of nickel and photoredox catalysis for Csp3-Csp2 cross‐coupling reactions is discussed.
Conscious Machines: A Possibility? If So, How?
2020
The scope of the paper is to encourage scientists and engineering to avoid to do what Einstein pointed out as being the hallmark of folly. Machine consciousness scholars must be brave enough to step out of the beaten path. There must be some big recurrent conceptual mistakes that prevent science and technology from addressing machine consciousness.
Opinia prawna w sprawie uprawnień informacyjnych oraz rektyfikacyjnych członków związków wyznaniowych w odniesieniu do danych osobowych przetwarzanyc…
2017
W opinii przedstawiono standardy krajowe w zakresie uprawnień informacyjnych i rektyfikacyjnych członków związków wyznaniowych, jakie polski ustawodawca określił w ustawie z dnia 29 sierpnia 1997 r. o ochronie danych osobowych.
On the Link between Urban Location and the Involvement of Knowledge-Intensive Business Services Firms in Collaboration Networks
2013
Herstad S. J. and Ebersberger B. On the link between urban location and the involvement of knowledge-intensive business services firms in collaboration networks, Regional Studies. Knowledge-intensive business services firms can play a key role in modern economies by linking localized collaboration networks to global knowledge flows, and by actively serving in support of knowledge diffusion across institutional and sectoral divides. The extent to which they do is dependent on the resources available locally. This paper uses the unique establishment-level innovation data available in Norway to investigate whether location in urban labour market regions influences the geographical scope of col…
Reflections on the Proposed Definition and Scope of Behavioral Medicine
2016
Purpose To respond to comments on our proposal for an update of the definition and scope of behavioral medicine. Methods We identify common themes in the comments and provide a response. Results We discuss the relationship of behavioral medicine to other disciplines and fields, the scope of behavioral medicine, and issues related to the application of behavioral medicine. Conclusion Based on the comments of our esteemed colleagues and our reflection on those comments, we now offer the following refined definition and scope of behavioral medicine. ‘Behavioral medicine can be defined as the field characterized by the collaboration among multiple disciplines concerned with the development and …
The Architecture of a Complex System: The Oradea Metropolitan Area in Romania
2017
This chapter approaches the experience of inter-municipal cooperation in the metropolitan area corresponding to one of Romania’s largest cities. It shows that, in a national context not yet ready for the notion of metropolitan authority, making metropolitan cooperation work and achieving palpable results in terms of economies of scale and scope in service delivery require the setting up of a very complex structure. This complexity poses challenges in terms of decision-making and inter-sectoral coordination, while at the same time creates favourable premises for the political accountability of inter-municipal cooperation arrangements. This complexity has also proven to be the seed for volunt…
Plataformas digitales y concepto de trabajador: una propuesta de interpretación finalista
2019
There is consensus in the labor law doctrine that the concept of worker must be interpreted according to the social reality of the moment in which it should be applied. The present work analyzes what this affirmation means in the current moment of expansion of digital platforms and autonomous work in general. For that, i) the existing proposals in the comparative doctrine of extension of the subjective scope of Labor Law are analyzed; ii) the aims of labor law; iii) the latest interpretations of the Supreme Court of the concept of worker. Based on this analysis, a purposive interpretation proposal is made of the concept of worker that allows to include all those who provide services without…
