Age and ovarian development are related to worker personality and task allocation in the ant Leptothorax acervorum

2014

Abstract In social insects, workers of different morphological castes and age are known to act differently. Yet, it is unclear how body size and ovarian development influence worker personalities (i.e. consistent behavioral variation) and task allocation in similar aged ant workers of monomorphic species. Behavioral variation is thought to be a key element of division of labor, but few studies have linked worker personality to task allocation. We investigated individual behavior in Leptothorax acervorum ant workers at two time points during the first three months of their life and in two different settings. We observed worker behavior in the nest (i.e. task allocation) and in standardized a…

Blockchain applications in management: A bibliometric analysis and literature review

2021

Blockchain has gained substantial recognition for its ability to induce transformation and innovation in existing business models and frameworks. Consequently, the application of this technology to the management domain and its processes has attracted increasing interest from academia and industry. Although research addressing the use of blockchain in management has gained momentum, this field presents a discontinuous overview of the current scope and boundary of the knowledge thereon. This study addresses this lacuna using bibliometric analyses to synthesize the prior literature. Data from Scopus 586 articles, entailing contributions from 72 countries, 273 journals, 1016 organizations, and…

To successfully learn using open Internet resources, students must be able to critically search, evaluate and select online information, and verify sources. Defined as critical online reasoning (COR), this construct is operationalized on two levels in our study: (1) the student level using the newly developed Critical Online Reasoning Assessment (CORA), and (2) the online information processing level using event log data, including gaze durations and fixations. The written responses of 32 students for one CORA task were scored by three independent raters. The resulting score was operationalized as “task performance,” whereas the gaze fixations and durations were defined as indicators of “pr…

A concept for personal wellness management based on activity monitoring

2008

Lifestyle related health problems are increasing rapidly. Many of them could be prevented or alleviated by sufficient physical activity, enough sleep, and a balanced diet. Individual citizens have the main responsibility for their own health and wellness management in their daily lives. Motivational tools based on modern technologies can support people in this task. Vivago Personal Wellness Manager (PWM) is a concept for personal wellness management, based on continuous activity monitoring with a wrist-worn device combined with immediate feedback on daily activity, e.g., sleep and physical activity. The concept allows long-term monitoring of activity patterns and includes PC software for de…

Exploiting Semantic Trajectories Using HMMs and BIM for Worker Safety in Dynamic Environments

2020

International audience; Understanding dynamic behaviors of moving objects using positioning technologies for construction safety monitoring is still an open research issue. One task; that is a small subset in the widespread field of objects dynamics is the enrichment of the location data of users with the semantic information for studying their mobility patterns in the context of the environment. However, incorporating the semantics related to the environment gets complex in case of the dynamic construction sites where the site spaces are kept evolving with time. For instance, new walls and infrastructure supports are added often on sites, while others are detached. Similar situations open …

Integration of cloud computing tools and knowledge bodies for the management of programming projects

2018

A Body of Knowledge (BOK) is a set of concepts and skills that represent the knowledge of a specific area of engineering or scientific discipline and ensure their common understanding [1]. A BOK can include technical terms and theoretical concepts as well as best practices [2] so in this document we will focus on the context of software engineering specifically in Software Project Management. In addition, Cloud Computing will is becoming the best way to deliver solutions that meet the current need for greater collaboration between companies, education and society. In this context, the learning of Software Project Management is important during the professional life of Informatica since it e…

Integrating Social Skills in Task-Oriented 3D IVA

2005

This paper presents a set of mechanisms oriented to incorporate social information into the decision taking of task-oriented 3DIVA. The aim of this approach is to integrate collaborative skills in different character's roles (seller/buyer, worker, pedestrian, etc.) in order to enhance its behavioral animation. The collective intelligence expected in this kind of multi-character domains (e.g. storytelling, urban simulation, interactive games, etc.) requires agents able to dialogue/interact with other characters, to autonomously group/ungroup (according to their goals), or to distribute tasks and coordinate their execution for solving possible conflicts. The social model implemented follows t…

An inductive inference approach to classification

1994

Abstract In this paper we introduce a formal framework for investigating the relationship of inductive inference and the task of classification. We give the first results on the relationship between functions that can be identified in the limit and functions that can be acquired from unclassified objects only. Moreover, we present results on the complexity of classification functions and the preconditions necessary in order to allow the computation of such functions.

Multi-functional Protein Clustering in PPI Networks

2008

Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) networks contain valuable information for the isolation of groups of proteins that participate in the same biological function. Many proteins play different roles in the cell by taking part in several processes, but isolating the different processes in which a protein is involved is often a difficult task. In this paper we present a method based on a greedy local search technique to detect functional modules in PPI graphs. The approach is conceived as a generalization of the algorithm PINCoC to generate overlapping clusters of the interaction graph in input. Due to this peculiarity, multi-facets proteins are allowed to belong to different groups correspondi…
