Simulation Modeling Using Agents For Mass Customization
2004
Reconfigurable enterprises and production networks — virtual structures of manufacturing enterprises that coalesce and vanish in response to a dynamic marketplace — are one of the main enabler paradigm for mass customizable production. The design and coordination of production networks to changing market dynamics are challenging tasks. Simulation provides the ability to develop prototypes of such complex systems cost effectively and in shorter duration. This Chapter describes how simulation can be utilized in conjunction with multi agent system techniques to develop realistic prototypes of complex decision support systems for the design of coordination strategies in large-scale mass customi…
An ecological dynamics framework for the acquisition of perceptual-motor skills in climbing
2016
Uncertainty in extreme sports performance environments, like rock and ice climbing, provides considerable psycho-emotional and physiological demands which challenge the acquisition of perceptual-motor skills. An ecological dynamics theoretical framework adopts concepts and tools of nonlinear dynamics and ecological psychology to investigate and model the relationships that emerge in extreme sports between athletes and their performance environments. In this relation, the interactions of athletes with key objects, surfaces, events and significant others during a sport like climbing emerge from interdependent personal, task and environmental constraints on performance. Performance behaviours …
Event Reconstruction
2014
Event reconstruction is one of the most important step in digital forensic investigations. It allows investigators to have a clear view of the events that have occurred over time. Event reconstruction is a complex task which requires exploration of a large amount of events due to the pervasiveness of new technologies nowadays. Any evidence produced at the end of the investigative process must also meet the requirements of the courts, such as reproducibility, verifiability, validation, etc. After defining the most important concepts of event reconstruction, a survey of the challenges of this field and solutions proposed so far is given in this chapter. Irish Research Council Science Foundati…
RF-based node system for blind navigation in running activities
2008
The system presented is oriented for use by blind adults or children in running activities at a stadium or an analogical large space. The system dynamically provides a blind person with navigation related information. Radio signal strength measurements are used in localization task. The system makes a blind person more independent in sport, eliminating the need in explicit human assistance.
Embedding “roadside equipment” in the environmental assessment of transportation system: the case of safety barriers
2014
The work arises from the consideration that the environmental impact of a road cannot be limited to the analysis of its constituent materials, even if correctly analyzed in their life cycle. In fact, a given road not only consists of the pavement and subgrade, but also includes several different components and accessories (e.g., road marking, drainages, safety barriers, etc.) that contribute to set a road infrastructure in operative condition. As a matter of fact, only limited attention has been paid in the scientific literature to roadside components, unlike pavement and traffic flow. In the present work, the environmental burden of one of these components, i.e., the safety barrier has bee…
Time reduction for completion of a civil engineering construction using fuzzy clustering techniques
2017
In the civil engineering field, there are usually unexpected troubles that can cause delays during execution. This situation involves numerous variables (resource number, execution time, costs, working area availability, etc.), mutually dependent, that complicate the definition of the problem analytical model and the related resolution. Consequently, the decision-maker may avoid rational methods to define the activities that could be conveniently modified, relying only on his personal experience or experts’ advices. In order to improve this kind of decision from an objective point of view, the authors analysed the operation correction using a data mining technique, called Fuzzy Clustering. …
2019
This article analyses the design, implementation, and evaluation of a nation-wide project to create a common digital solution for university teaching staff’s pedagogical training in Finland. During three years, eight universities collaborated in developing an online learning platform called UNIPS, the University Pedagogical Support system. The areas to develop were A) a learning platform based on technical design principles, B) pedagogical principles, and C) broadening the scope of offered studies. The results have been promising. With a carefully planned timetable, all participating universities were able to produce, test, and offer UNIPS modules in collaboration with other universities …
Effects of Task-Irrelevant Cars on Judgments of Deceleration and Time-to-Contact During Car-Following
2012
Rear-end collisions represent over 25% of crashes with other moving vehicles (NHTSA, 2005). Factors that potentially contribute to such accidents include a driver’s ability to respond to a lead car’s deceleration and to estimate how much time remains until a collision would occur (DeLucia & Tharanathan, 2009). Prior research (Oberfeld & Hecht, 2008) showed that time-to-contact (TTC) judgments of approaching objects were influenced by task-irrelevant distractor objects. This finding has implications for rear-end collisions when drivers must detect a lead car’s deceleration amidst surrounding cars. However, Oberfeld and Hecht simulated a stationary observer rather than a moving obser…
Research the Opportunities a Foreign Languages’ Competence for Professional Project Management in Latvia
2015
In the current competitive working environment time has become the key resource therefore universities must be able to satisfy higher education needs by enabling students to obtain as many professional skills and knowledge as possible. One of the solutions is to develop online studies by organising the language courses on the internet and by supplementing in-class courses with online study materials. The goal of this work is to research the opportunities a foreign languages’ competence for professional project management in Latvia. Research materials on foreign language teaching methods and applicable IC technological aspects were gathered, and a survey was completed and its results analyse…
Service-oriented Architecture Projects in Practice: A Study of a Shared Document Service Implementation
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Procedia Technology. Also available on Science Direct: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.protcy.2014.10.017 This paper reports on a case study focusing on service-oriented architecture (SOA) projects in practice. The aim of these projects has been to develop a shared document service supporting different business divisions in a large Norwegian governmental institution. The research question guiding this research is: How are SOA projects carried out in practice? What are the challenges of developing shared services in service-oriented architecture? SOA projects are accompanied by a complex socio-technical system development environment. In the presen…
