Continuous-time portfolio optimization under terminal wealth constraints

1995

Typically portfolio analysis is based on the expected utility or the mean-variance approach. Although the expected utility approach is the more general one, practitioners still appreciate the mean-variance approach. We give a common framework including both types of selection criteria as special cases by considering portfolio problems with terminal wealth constraints. Moreover, we propose a solution method for such constrained problems.

Un procedimiento de fuerte reducción de las dimensiones del RCPS/π

2009

Recently, in the field of project scheduling problems the concept of partially renewable resources has been introduced. Theoretically, it is a generalization of both renewable and non-renewable resources. From an applied point of view, partially renewable resources allow us to model a large variety of situations that do not fit into classical models, but can be found in real problems in timetabling and labour scheduling. When modelling real problems, the problem of project scheduling with partially renewable resources, as many other combinatorial problems, gets such large dimensions that it is quite difficult to apply solution procedures. In this paper, we describe some powerful preprocessi…

A multi-objective approach for a project scheduling problem with due dates and temporal constraints infeasibilities

2014

In this paper, we study a multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) which considers time and work generalised precedence relationships with minimal and maximal time lags and due dates where each activity requires only one unit of resource (e.g. a worker, a machine, etc.). To find a feasible solution for this problem is NP-hard and therefore for instances where a feasible solution has not been found, an appropriate real-life approach would consist of providing the decision-maker with a collection of quality solutions with a trade-off between due dates and temporal constraints violations. We propose a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm for the generation of an app…

Project duration evaluated using affine arithmetic

2016

A civil engineering work can be performed by organizing the available resources (manpower, equipment and materials) in many different ways. Each different configuration results in a realization time and a cost that a building company has to bear. To produce reliable duration forecasts and money savings, it is essential to take into account all the uncertainties involved in the project operations. Generally, since it is impractical to process numerous uncertain variables - also undefined from a statistical point of view -, traditional probabilistic methods involve application difficulties for complex environments such as construction sites. To properly handle this issue, the authors propose …

A simulation/optimization model for selecting infrastructure alternatives in complex water resource systems

2010

The paper introduces a simulation/optimization procedure for the assessment and the selection of infrastructure alternatives in a complex water resources system, i.e. in a multisource (reservoirs) multipurpose bulk water supply scheme. An infrastucture alternative is here a vector X of n decision variables describing the candidate expansions/new plants/water transfers etc. Each parameter may take on a discrete number of values, with its own investment cost attached. The procedure uses genetic algorithms for the search of the optimal vector X through operators mimicking the mechanisms of natural selection. For each X, the value of the objective function (O.F.) is assessed via a simulation mo…

Approximation of the Feasible Parameter Set in worst-case identification of Hammerstein models

2005

The estimation of the Feasible Parameter Set (FPS) for Hammerstein models in a worst-case setting is considered. A bounding procedure is determined both for polytopic and ellipsoidic uncertainties. It consists in the projection of the FPS of the extended parameter vector onto suitable subspaces and in the solution of convex optimization problems which provide Uncertainties Intervals of the model parameters. The bounds obtained are tighter than in the previous approaches. hes.

A double genetic algorithm for the MRCPSP/max

2011

This paper presents a heuristic solution procedure for a very general resource-constrained project scheduling problem. Here, multiple execution modes are available for the individual activities of the project. In addition, minimum as well as maximum time lags between different activities may be given. The objective is to determine a mode and a start time for each activity such that the temporal and resource constraints are met and the project duration is minimised. Project scheduling problems of this type occur e.g. in process industries. The heuristic is a two-phased genetic algorithm with different representation, fitness, crossover operator, etc., in each of them. One of the contribution…

An Island Strategy for Memetic Discrete Tomography Reconstruction

2014

In this paper we present a parallel island model memetic algorithm for binary discrete tomography reconstruction that uses only four projections without any further a priori information. The underlying combination strategy consists in separated populations of agents that evolve by means of different processes. Agents progress towards a possible solution by using genetic operators, switch and a particular compactness operator. A guided migration scheme is applied to select suitable migrants by considering both their own and their sub-population fitness. That is, from time to time, we allow some individuals to transfer to different subpopulations. The benefits of this paradigm were tested in …

GRASP and path relinking for project scheduling under partially renewable resources

2008

[EN] Recently, in the field of project scheduling problems the concept of partially renewable resources has been introduced. Theoretically, it is a generalization of both renewable and non-renewable resources. From an applied point of view, partially renewable resources allow us to model a large variety of situations that do not fit into classical models, but can be found in real problems in timetabling and labor scheduling. In this paper, we develop some preprocessing techniques and several heuristic algorithms for the problem. Preprocessing significantly reduces the dimension of the problems, therefore improving the efficiency of solution procedures. Heuristic algorithms based on GRASP an…
