The read-out processors of the Aleph time projection chamber and their performance

1990

The Aleph detector is installed on the LEP electron-positron storage ring. Its central tracking detector, a time projection chamber (TPC), has about 50000 channels of sampling electronics. The digitized signals are processed by 72 double-width Fastbus modules built around an MC 68020 processor. The time projection processor is described, and the solutions, both hardware and software, adopted to run and manage such a complex system in a Fastbus-VAX environment are discussed. Practical experience with the system is reported. >

Energetic collisions of charged projectiles with atomic bound states

1998

Abstract Use of the multiple-scattering expansion of the three-body amplitude for atomic direct and exchange reactions requires the evaluation of multidimensional integrals involving the two-body Coulomb T-operator. We present here numerical results for the first-order terms, both for the attractive and repulsive case. Furthermore, easy-to-calculate approximations are described which in their domain of validity (i) reproduce the exact amplitudes to high accuracy, and (ii) also serve to derive interesting theoretical results.

Angular momentum projection of cranked Hartree-Fock states: Application to terminating bands inA~44nuclei

2007

We present the first systematic calculations based on the angular-momentum projection of cranked Slater determinants. We propose the Iy --> I scheme, by which one projects the angular momentum I from the 1D cranked state constrained to the average spin projection of =I. Calculations performed for the rotational band in 46Ti show that the AMP Iy --> I scheme offers a natural mechanism for correcting the cranking moment of inertia at low-spins and shifting the terminating state up by ~2 MeV, in accordance with data. We also apply this scheme to high-spin states near the band termination in A~44 nuclei, and compare results thereof with experimental data, shell-model calculations, and res…

The zero-point energy for rotation

1978

The Gaussian overlap approach (GOA) becomes inappropriate for describing the rotation of weakly deformed systems. A modification is proposed which allows to maintain the GOA for small deformations. The zero-point energy subtraction, derived from it, provides a simple and reliable approximation for angular momentum projection. It becomes obvious, however, that the projection complicates the equations which determine the motion along the deformation path. These effects are studied in some simple models and the results are condensed into a simple interpolation formula for the total zero-point energy.

New experimental stopping power data of 4He, 16O, 40Ar, 48Ca and 84Kr projectiles in different solid materials

2018

Abstract New experimental data on energy loss of 4 He, 16 O, 40 Ar, 48 Ca and 84 Kr ions in thin, self-supporting foils of C, Al, Ni, Ag, Lu, Au, Pb and Th are presented. The measurements, using the TOF-E method, were done in a very broad energy range around the stopping power maximum; typically from 0.1 to 11 MeV/u. When available, the extracted stopping power values are compared with the previously published data. The overall agreement is good although a fair comparison is difficult as the covered energy range is much larger than in previous measurements. The small error bars and a broad coverage allowed us to test the predictions of theoretical codes: PASS, CasP, and semi-empirical progr…

Coulomb excitation of $^{78}$Kr

2006

Expérience à JYFL cyclotron (Jyväskylä, Finlande); The Kr isotopes are considered to be among the best cases for shape coexistence studies in the mass A$\sim$70 region. Our campaign to investigate in detail the development of the shape coexistence in the neutron deficient Kr isotopes was started with the stable nucleus $^{78}$Kr. To obtain the information about the intrinsic shape, Coulomb excitation experiments were performed. A total of 26 matrix elements were determined for $^{78)$Kr. Simple geometrical and algebraic models do not reproduce all details of the electromagnetic structure. A good interpretation of the complex structure of the nucleus with competing oblate and prolate shapes …

The new element 111

1995

The new element 111 was produced and unambiguously identified in an experiment at SHIP, GSI Darmstadt. Three nuclei of the isotope272111 were observed in irradiations of209Bi targets with64Ni projectiles of 318 MeV and 320 MeV energy. The cross-sections are (1.7 −1.4 +3.3 ) pb and (3.5 −2.3 +4.6 ) pb, respectively. The nuclei decay by a emission into the new and so far the heaviest isotopes of the elements 109 and 107 with mass numbers A=268 and A=264. Theα-decay chains were followed down to the known nuclei260105 and256Lr.
