Polyhedrality and decomposition

2018

Abstract The aim of this note is to present two results that make the task of finding equivalent polyhedral norms on certain Banach spaces, having either a Schauder basis or an uncountable unconditional basis, easier and more transparent. The hypotheses of both results are based on decomposing the unit sphere of a Banach space into countably many pieces, such that each one satisfies certain properties. Some examples of spaces having equivalent polyhedral norms are given.

Factors Differentiating Rural and Urban Population in Determining Anxiety and Depression in Patients with Chronic Cardiovascular Disease: A Pilot Stu…

2021

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to analyze selected variables differentiating rural from urban populations, as well as identify potentially increased levels of depression and anxiety in patients with chronic cardiovascular disease. The study was carried out in 193 patients. The study used the Camberwell Assessment of Need Short Appraisal Schedule (CANSAS), the Health Behavior Inventory Questionnaire (HBI), the WHOQOL-BREF Quality of Life Questionnaire, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale–Modified Version (HADS-M). Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient test and logistic regression were used for analyses. In rural patients, we observed a relationship between anxiety and …

Searching for the measure

2020

In the Sixties of last century Manfredo Tafuri presented its city layout based on a linear relation binding the words urban planning - town design – architecture on Casabella’s pages. This progression, underlain by the concept of scale proposed by the Modernist Movement, resulted from the interpretation of the urban project as confined between the boundlessness of urban planning and the finiteness of buildings. The studies and research connected with some Italian practices searching for the utility of the architectural project in terms of synthetic transdisciplinary intersection, focused essentially on this contradiction. In 1959 the competition for Barene di San Giuliano in Mestre divided …

Reggio Calabria-Istanbul. A Project for Galata. International Urban Design Workshop 2019. URBAN FAÇADE: ISTANBUL WATERFRONT

2020

The object of study is the disappeared Rione Conceria inside the Historical Center of Palerm…

The urban project as a project of modification

2015

The essay “The urban project as a project of modification” focuses on three different aspects: the architecture as a disciplinary corpus of spatial composition of the space, the city as Carlo Cattaneo describes it, as: "the principle of all histories" and finally the definition following the concept of creativity, as modification of the existing (Vittorio Gregotti). This triad of key words - that has connoted the title of the Summer School, edition 2014 - reflects on the relationship that has been developed in the twentieth century between architectural design and urban planning, but above all concentrating on a possible new relationship in response to the growing needs of the cities and se…

2023

The essay critically traces some exempla of public residential housing that have characterised the development of the urban periphery of 20th century Italian cities. There are many experiences that describe the close union that existed throughout the last century between the suburbs and the construction of new public housing in our country. In this regard, three different historical thresholds that mark as many significant moments in the urban history of Italian cities are identified. The different periods correspond with the promulgation of likewise laws. The first one in chronological order was the Luzzati Law, which tried to respond to the industrial city needs for new housing through th…

Urban shrinkage became a central issue in both the scientific debate and the political agenda of several European cities. According to EUROSTAT data (2019) about 40% of European cities with more than 200000 inhabitants are losing population. A shrinkage that is more explicit in a progressive underutilization of the built heritage as well as in the concomitant increase of abandoned areas. In this controversial framework of structural mutation of the city urban policies in Europe try to decline the degrowth as a strategic opportunity to invest in green areas in order to increase urban quality and to act simultaneously on the development of local economies. With respect to the above framework this contribution focuses on the evaluation of the effects that the project of new public green spaces have generated on some sample areas on the outskirts of the city of Palermo. An urban context where according to the latest Svimez Report (2019) the phenomenon of urban shrinkage represents a constantly growing trend and on which the new Master Plan operates through a revival of interventions on environmental capital and urban green areas of the city.Settore ICAR/21 - Urbanistica

Analysis of the impact on tourism of the megaproject-based urban development strategy. The case of the city of Valencia

2017

Rethinking practices of assessment for learning: Tablet technology supported assessment for learning mathematics

2013

This article discusses assessment for learning in mathematics subjects. It is challenging for teachers of large classes to regularly assess students' mathematics in order to help them improve their learning achievement. Given the complexity of assessing and providing feedback for learning, a new approach to assessment for learning was suggested. Media tablet technology supported assessment processes were devised and user studies were conducted in Norway and Rwanda. There are indications that students like to be involved in assessing each other's mathematics work. Students expect to get learning gains by providing and obtaining feedback to/from their peers using technology supported tools.
