Revisión del sistema pronominal español

2002

This article offers a critical review of the Spanish pronominal system (personal, possessive and demonstrative pronouns) as described in Nebrija's works and in those of the 16th and 17th century grammarians. These texts show that the history of grammatics is frequently a history of errors. In fact, the methodology conveniences they chose to establish regular models, led grammarians to false the reality of the language. Quite frequently also, as they intended to develop the grammatical thinking establishing certain categories or divisions among them, these authors originated errors that have been perpetuated in their texts. From my point of view, that is the case for pronouns. As has been de…

An Overview of Business Writing: Challenges and Solutions

2019

Abstract Bad writing can affect individuals and companies alike. It can cause confusion and misunderstanding, waste important resources of time and money, erode credibility and trust. On the other hand, clear writing will increase productivity, promote goodwill, and cement relations. This article discusses some of the most common problems encountered in business writing, together with their causes and the solutions proposed in the literature. Using too many words, an abstract vocabulary, and passive constructions will obscure the message and tire the reader. Conversely, the elimination of clutter, the use of plain words and personal pronouns, and the construction of sentences with clear sub…

Il clitico soggetto di terza persona al in friulano centrale. Proposta per una nuova analisi

2018

This chapter discusses the syntactic properties of the subject clitici pronoun 'al' ('he.CL') in Central Friulian. The description is based on a comparison with Western Friulian, in which the clitic cluster 'a l' occurs. We show that the Central Friulian 'al' is syntactically different and should be analysed as a single clitic. In the cases in which 'al' does not occur (this happens when another clitic pronoun is present), or when it occurs in the form -l (only after negation: 'nol' 'not=he.CL) is due to phonology. Our proposal is also strengthened by considering data from aphasia: aphasic speakers of Central Friulian seem to conceive the 'al' as a single clitic.

Auditory Phenomena and Human Life: Phenomenological Experience

2018

The present study analyzes auditory phenomena from the point of view of hermeneutical phenomenology and shows their interconnectedness with the understanding of man, hearing and listening within the context of human life as the horizon of meaningful sonority and silence. The central questions to be answered in this study are these: What is experienced as sound and sonority? How does a human see himself in inclusion of his being from where he listens, understands, and speaks? The study explores the classical standpoints of Husserl’s phenomenology and other philosophical apprehensions which confirm that auditory phenomena is not to be apprehended solely as an isolated horizon but as being per…

The exceptional nature of the first person in natural story processing and the transfer of egocentricity

2018

Human language enables us to externalise self-internal information (e.g. emotions or beliefs that are not readily accessible to others). Thus, language bridges the gap between the self and the other (e.g. Frith and Frith, 2010) in a way that possibly no other communication system can provide. In many languages, the difference between the self and others is directly reflected in the distinction between first (“I”), second (“you”) and third person (“he, she”) marking. In the present study, we compared ERPs to first, second and third person pronouns during the comprehension of an audio-book version of The Little Prince. Our results revealed a strong P300 response following first person pronoun…

Microvariation in the Distribution of Resumptive Pronouns in the Left Dislocation Construction in Two Tyrolean Dialects of Northern Italy

2023

In this paper we document a so-far neglected case of microvariation involving resumptive pronouns in the left-dislocation construction in Meranese, spoken in South Tyrol, and Mòcheno, spoken in the Fersina valley (Trentino). While in standard German resumptive elements in this construction belong to the class of D-pronouns, the two Tyrolean dialects considered in the paper exhibit, as resumptive pronouns, both (i) D-pronouns and (ii) pronominal usages of the distal demonstrative formed by the definite article (D) and sèll corresponding to ‘that one’. We show that in both languages D+sèll forms overlap with German D-pronouns in most contexts, whereas D-pronou…

The "intimate enemies": Edward Dowden, W. B. Yeats and the formation of character

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Nordic Journal of English Studies. Also available from the publisher at: http://ojs.ub.gu.se/ojs/index.php/njes/article/view/2917 Open Access Stung by Edward Dowden's reluctance to endorse the Irish Literary Revival, W. B. Yeats distanced himself publicly from the TCD Professor. This act of distancing has largely been accepted by subsequent scholarship as a reflection of Dowden's lack of influence on Yeats. Despite obvious disagreements on some key points, this essay will argue that Yeats is close to Dowden on a number of issues, by tracing their intimate dialogue about the writings of George Eliot, Shakespeare and Goethe. The concept of forma…

A third space: discursive realizations of immigrant identity

2015

The relationship between additional language use and identity has long been of interest to scholars studying immigration and multilingualism. While oral language is frequently examined as a site for the negotiation of identity, written texts can also be studied for information about how language learners position themselves within their receiving culture. This study looks at the relationship between pronoun choice and identity in additional language academic writing by first generation immigrants in Norway, arguing that language learners signal solidarity with certain subject positions through their use of pronouns. Examining English-language texts discussing themes related to language pres…
