Homomorphisms and composition operators on algebras of analytic functions of bounded type

2005

Abstract Let U and V be convex and balanced open subsets of the Banach spaces X and Y, respectively. In this paper we study the following question: given two Frechet algebras of holomorphic functions of bounded type on U and V, respectively, that are algebra isomorphic, can we deduce that X and Y (or X * and Y * ) are isomorphic? We prove that if X * or Y * has the approximation property and H wu ( U ) and H wu ( V ) are topologically algebra isomorphic, then X * and Y * are isomorphic (the converse being true when U and V are the whole space). We get analogous results for H b ( U ) and H b ( V ) , giving conditions under which an algebra isomorphism between H b ( X ) and H b ( Y ) is equiv…

On Codimension Growth of Finitely Generated Associative Algebras

1998

Abstract LetAbe a PI-algebra over a fieldF. We study the asymptotic behavior of the sequence of codimensionscn(A) ofA. We show that ifAis finitely generated overFthenInv(A)=limn→∞  c n (A) always exists and is an integer. We also obtain the following characterization of simple algebras:Ais finite dimensional central simple overFif and only ifInv(A)=dim=A.

Ordering and Convex Polyominoes

2005

We introduce a partial order on pictures (matrices), denoted by ≼ that extends to two dimensions the subword ordering on words. We investigate properties of special families of discrete sets (corresponding to {0,1}-matrices) with respect to this partial order. In particular we consider the families of polyominoes and convex polyominoes and the family, recently introduced by the authors, of L-convex polyominoes. In the first part of the paper we study the closure properties of such families with respect to the order. In particular we obtain a new characterization of L-convex polyominoes: a discrete set P is a L-convex polyomino if and only if all the elements Q≼P are polyominoes. In the seco…

Reconstruction of L-convex Polyominoes.

2003

Abstract We introduce the family of L-convex polyominoes, a subset of convex polyominoes whose elements satisfy a special convexity property. We develop an algorithm that reconstructs an L-convex polyomino from the set of its maximal L-polyominoes.

The Bishop–Phelps–Bollobás property for operators from c0 into some Banach spaces

2017

Abstract We exhibit a new class of Banach spaces Y such that the pair ( c 0 , Y ) has the Bishop–Phelps–Bollobas property for operators. This class contains uniformly convex Banach spaces and spaces with the property β of Lindenstrauss. We also provide new examples of spaces in this class.

The Fixed Point Property in Banach Spaces with the NUS-Property

1997

Abstract In this paper, we show that the weak nearly uniform smooth Banach spaces have the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings.

Strict u-ideals in Banach spaces

2009

We study strict u-ideals in Banach spaces. A Banach space X is a strict u-ideal in its bidual when the canonical decomposition X = X X ? is unconditional. We characterize Banach spaces which are strict u-ideals in their bidual and show that if X is a strict u-ideal in a Banach space Y then X contains c0. We also show that '1 is not a u-ideal.

Radon–Nikodym Property and Area Formula for Banach Homogeneous Group Targets

2013

We prove a Rademacher-type theorem for Lipschitz mappings from a subset of a Carnot group to a Banach homogeneous group, equipped with a suitably weakened Radon-Nikodym property. We provide a metric area formula that applies to these mappings and more generally to all almost everywhere metrically differentiable Lipschitz mappings defined on a Carnot group. peerReviewed

Henstock–Kurzweil–Pettis integrability of compact valued multifunctions with values in an arbitrary Banach space

2013

Abstract The aim of this paper is to describe Henstock–Kurzweil–Pettis (HKP) integrable compact valued multifunctions. Such characterizations are known in case of functions (see Di Piazza and Musial (2006)  [16] ). It is also known (see Di Piazza and Musial (2010)  [19] ) that each HKP-integrable compact valued multifunction can be represented as a sum of a Pettis integrable multifunction and of an HKP-integrable function. Invoking to that decomposition, we present a pure topological characterization of integrability. Having applied the above results, we obtain two convergence theorems, that generalize results known for HKP-integrable functions. We emphasize also the special role played in …

Property (M) and the weak fixed point property

1997

It is shown that in Banach spaces with the property (M) of Kalton, nonexpansive self mappings of nonempty weakly compact convex sets necessarily have fixed points. The stability of this conclusion under renormings is examined and conditions for such spaces to have weak normal structure are considered.
