Growth differentiation factor 15 and geriatric conditions in acute coronary syndrome
2019
Abstract Background Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is a marker of cell senescence. Age is a well-known determinant of GDF-15 levels, yet no study has analyzed the relationship between geriatric conditions and GDF-15. We hypothesize that geriatric conditions reflecting biological age might be stronger determinants of GDF-15 than chronological age in elderly patients with acute coronary syndrome. Methods A total of 208 patients (mean age = 78.3 ± 7.0 years) were included. Prior to discharge, a thorough geriatric assessment was performed and GDF-15 measured. Predictors of GDF-15 (transformed by its natural logarithm) were determined with linear regression. Furthermore, Cox regressio…
Effect of acute heart failure following discharge in patients with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome on the subsequent risk of death or acute …
2010
Little is known about how prognosis is influenced by readmission for acute heart failure (AHF) following non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTEACS). The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic effect of a first admission for AHF on the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or death in patients who survived an episode of high-risk NSTEACS.The study involved 972 consecutive patients with high-risk NSTEACS who survived after hospital admission. Readmission for AHF was selected as the main exposure variable, and its association with subsequent AMI or all-cause death was assessed using Cox proportional hazards models for time-dependent covariates that also included …
Midregional Proadrenomedullin for Prediction of Cardiovascular Events in Coronary Artery Disease: Results from the AtheroGene Study
2011
Abstract BACKGROUND Midregional proadrenomedullin (MR-proADM) is a newly identified prognostic marker in heart failure. We evaluated the prognostic impact of MR-proADM in a cohort of patients with symptomatic coronary artery disease according to their clinical presentation. METHODS We measured baseline MR-proADM concentrations in 2240 individuals from the prospective AtheroGene study and evaluated the prognostic impact on future fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events during a follow-up period of 3.6 (1.6) years. RESULTS The sample comprised 1355 individuals with stable angina pectoris (SAP) and 885 with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). A cardiovascular event occurred in 192 people. Individu…
Handgrip strength and its prognostic value for mortality in Moscow, Denmark, and England.
2017
BACKGROUND: This study compares handgrip strength and its association with mortality across studies conducted in Moscow, Denmark, and England.MATERIALS: The data collected by the Study of Stress, Aging, and Health in Russia, the Study of Middle-Aged Danish Twins and the Longitudinal Study of Aging Danish Twins, and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing was utilized.RESULTS: Among the male participants, the age-standardized grip strength was 2 kg and 1 kg lower in Russia than in Denmark and in England, respectively. The age-standardized grip strength among the female participants was 1.9 kg and 1.6 kg lower in Russia than in Denmark and in England, respectively. In Moscow, a one-kilogram …
Associations of handgrip strength with all-cause and cancer mortality in older adults: a prospective cohort study in 28 countries.
2022
Abstract Background mixed evidence exists on the association between muscle strength and mortality in older adults, in particular for cancer mortality. Aim to examine the dose–response association of objectively handgrip strength with all-cause and cancer mortality. Study Design and Setting data from consecutive waves from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe comprising 27 European countries and Israel were retrieved. Overall, 54,807 men (45.2%; 128,753 observations) and 66,576 women (54.8%; 159,591 observations) aged 64.0 (SD 9.6) and 63.9 (SD 10.2) years, respectively, were included. Cox regression and Fine-Grey sub-distribution method were conducted. Results during the f…
Visual Acuity and Mortality in Older People and Factors on the Pathway
2008
To examine vision as a predictor of mortality in older people and the role of mobility, depressed mood, chronic diseases, body mass index, physical activity and injurious accidents in this possible association.223 persons aged 75 and 193 persons aged 80 years at the baseline participated in visual acuity measurements. Visual acuity (VA) of0.3 in the better eye was defined as visual impairment, VA ofor = 0.3 butor = 0.5 as lowered vision and VA0.5 as normal VA. Death dates were received from the official register. Cox regression models were used to determine the relative risks of mortality and to study what factors lie on the pathway from poor vision to mortality.Over the 10-year follow-up, …
Age-dependency in mortality of family caregivers : a nationwide register-based study
2021
Abstract Background Evidence on family caregivers' health is conflicting. Aim To investigate all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Finnish family caregivers providing high-intensity care and to assess whether age modifies the association between family caregiver status and mortality using data from multiple national registers. Methods The data include all individuals, who received family caregiver's allowance in Finland in 2012 (n = 42,256, mean age 67 years, 71% women) and a control population matched for age, sex, and municipality of residence (n = 83,618). Information on dates and causes of death between 2012 and 2017 were obtained from the Finnish Causes of Death Register. Results F…
Polypharmacy in people with dementia: Associations with adverse health outcomes
2018
Polypharmacy has been linked to higher risks of hospitalisation and death in community samples. It is commonly present in people with dementia but these risks have rarely been studied in this population. We aimed to investigate associations between polypharmacy and emergency department attendance, any and unplanned hospitalisation, and mortality in patients with dementia. Using a large mental health care database in South London, linked to hospitalisation and mortality data, we assembled a retrospective cohort of patients diagnosed with dementia. We ascertained number of medications prescribed at the time of dementia diagnosis and conducted multivariate Cox regression analyses. Of 4668 pati…
Motor speed and lower extremity strength as predictors of fall-related bone fractures in elderly individuals.
2006
Background and aims: The purpose of this prospective population-based study was to examine the combined effects of motor speed and knee extension strength on risk of fall-related bone fractures in elderly individuals over a 10-year period. Methods: Participants were 307 men and women aged 75 or 80 years at baseline, who visited the research laboratory at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. Multi-choice motor speed tests and maximal isometric knee extension strength tests were carried out at baseline. Information on fractures was collected from hospital and health center records. The presence of impairment was defined as a score in the lowest tertile of sex- and age-stratified distribution…
The effect of body mass index, lower extremity performance, and use of a private car on incident life-space restriction: a two-year follow-up study
2018
Background: The purpose of the study was to explore the single and combined contributions of body mass index (BMI) and lower extremity performance as modifiable physical factors, and the influence of use of a private car as an environmental factor on prevalent and incident life-space restriction in community-dwelling older people. Methods: Community-dwelling people aged 75–90 years (n = 823) participated in the Life-Space Mobility in Old Age (LISPE) two-year follow-up study. Participants who reported that the largest life-space area they had attained, without aid from any device or another person, was the neighborhood or less were considered to have life-space restriction. Incident life-spa…
