Well-Defined Multi-Amino-Functional and Stimuli-Responsive Poly(propylene oxide) by Crown Ether Assisted Anionic Ring-Opening Polymerization

2017

Multi-amino-functional poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) copolymers were synthesized by the anionic ring-opening copolymerization (AROP) of N,N-diethyl glycidyl amine (DEGA) and propylene oxide (PO). A solvent free synthesis route using potassium counterions and crown ether for the AROP enabled controlled (co)polymerization with full conversion. The strategy provided access to PPO-b-PDEGA block copolymers, statistical PPO-co-PDEGA copolymers, and, for the first time, PDEGA homopolymer. Molecular weights in the range of 1400 to 4200 g/mol (Mn) and dispersities (Mw/Mn) below 1.1 were obtained. Both the kinetics and resulting microstructure of the statistical copolymerization were investigated by in…

Micropolarity and Order in the Reverse Micelles of L62 and L64 Pluronic Copolymers, As Studied by Molecular Probe Techniques

1998

The reverse micelles of triblock copolymers poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) EO6PO36EO6 (Pluronic L62) and EO13PO30EO13 (Pluronic L64) in ternary (copolymer/o-xylene/water) and binary (copolymer/water) systems with different water contents were evidenced and investigated by fluorescence, absorption, and spin probe techniques. The spectral parameters of the polarity sensitive probes, 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonic acid (ANS), dansylhexadecylamine (Dansyl), pyrenesulfonic acid (PSA), 4-nitropyridine N-oxide (NP) and 4-(N,N‘-dimethyl-N-alkyl)ammonium 2,2‘,6,6‘-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl iodide (CAT n), were related to the local hydration and polari…

Amino-functional polyethers: versatile, stimuli-responsive polymers

2020

Due to the increasing demand for “smart” materials and systems e.g. for actuators, microvalves, but also for drug delivery, electrooptical devices and many other applications, multi-stimuli responsive materials such as amino-functional polymers are attracting increasing attention in recent years. The hydrophilic character and excellent biocompatibility of the polyether backbone, in combination with multi-stimuli responsive amine moieties, offer intriguing opportunities for a wide range of applications, such as bioconjugation, stimuli-responsive drug delivery and surface modification. Furthermore, the controlled introduction of amino-functionalities at the polyether backbone via copolymeriza…

Aggregation in aqueous media of tri-block copolymers tuned by the molecular selectivity of cyclodextrins

2009

The water + cyclodextrin + poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) mixtures have been investigated to explore the temperature effect on the aggregation of the copolymer in the presence of cyclodextrins (CDs). The CDs with different cavity sizes were chosen because they may include either the hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxides) block or both kinds of blocks. The differential scanning calorimetry and viscosity experiments straightforwardly evidenced that the critical micellar temperature is shifted to larger values by adding a CD which is able to include the middle poly(propylene oxide) block while it is not influenced by the presence of CD which is selective to the poly…

Laponite clay in homopolymer and tri-block copolymer matrices

2007

Macromolecule/laponite nanomaterials were studied by DSC and X-ray diffraction techniques. The matrices are poly(ethylene) glycols at various molecular masses and poly(ethylene oxides)-poly(propylene oxides)-poly(ethylene oxides) tri-block copolymers. The latter were tuned by modulating the molecular masses, at constant hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio, and the hydrophilicity. For all the investigated systems, the enthalpy of melting (ΔH m) is nearly constant up to a given composition thereafter it increases monotonically reaching the value of the pure macromolecule. We proposed a model to interpret the DSC data. Briefly, it was invoked a mechanism of interaction following which some segments …

Highly cross-linked imidazolium salt entrapped magnetic particles – preparation and applications

2012

Magnetic particles entrapped into highly cross-linked imidazolium salts were synthesized using a straightforward approach by radical polymerization of bis-vinylimidazolium salts in the presence of superparamagnetic iron oxide particles. Potential applications for these new materials as (i) catalysts for conversion of propylene oxide to propylene carbonate, (ii) supports for organocatalysts, and (iii) scavenger materials for palladium removal are outlined.

Linear-dendritic nonionic poly(propylene oxide)–polyglycerol surfactants

2003

Abstract A new type of linear-hyperbranched surfactant has been prepared by anionic ring-opening multibranching polymerization of glycidol onto an end-functional poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) macroinitiator. A hyperbranched, highly hydrophilic polyglycerol block is obtained as the polar segment of the structure. Molecular weights of the nonionic amphiphiles obtained were in the range of 390 to 8,600 g/mol. For comparison, initiators bearing a C16 alkyl chain have also been employed. Furthermore, hyperbranched polyglycerol homopolymers were investigated with respect to amphiphilic properties. All linear-dendritic amphiphiles have been characterized by SEC, DSC, 13 C and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. A…

Neutron scattering characterization of homopolymers and graft-copolymer micelles in supercritical carbon dioxide

1996

Abstract Superficial fluids (SCF) are becoming an attractive alternative to the liquid solvents traditionally used as polymerization media [1]. As the synthesis proceeds, a wide range of colloidal aggregates form, but there has hitherto been no way to measure such structures directly. We have applied small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to characterize such systems, and although SCF polymerizations are carried out at high pressures, the penetrating power of the neutron beam means that typical cell windows are virtually transparent. Systems studied include polymers soluble in CO 2 such as poly(1,1-dihydroperfluorooctyl acrylate) (PFOA), poly(hexafluoropropylene oxide) (PHFPO) and poly(dimet…

Thermodynamics of Aqueous Poly(ethylene oxide)−Poly(propylene oxide)−Poly(ethylene oxide)/Surfactant Mixtures. Effect of the Copolymer Molecular Weig…

2004

A calorimetric study was performed to focus attention on the interactions between copolymers and anionic surfactants in aqueous solutions. Three aspects were analyzed: (1) the hydrophobicity of the surfactant, (2) the change of the copolymer molecular weight, and (3) the nature of the hydrophilicity of the copolymer. To this purpose, the family of sodium alkanoates (sodium octanoate through sodium dodecanoate) and the triblock copolymers EO76PO 29EO76 (F68), EO103PO39EO 103 and EO132PO50EO132 were investigated. Comparing F68 and EO13PO30EO13 (L64), previously studied by us, provided information on the effect of the copolymer hydrophilicity. The experimental data were analyzed by means of a …

Hyperbranched Poly(propylene oxide): A Multifunctional Backbone-Thermoresponsive Polyether Polyol Copolymer

2012

Backbone-thermoresponsive hyperbranched poly(propylene oxide)-based polyether polyols have been synthesized by anionic ring-opening copolymerization of glycidol and propylene oxide. The number of functional hydroxyl end groups and the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) can be readily adjusted by varying the comonomer ratio. Molecular weights in the range of 1200-2000 g/mol were achieved. Hyperbranched polyether polyols with LCST values between 24 and 83 °C can be obtained in a convenient one-step reaction.
