The paper presents the results of a campaign of non-destructive and minimally invasive tests that were conducted in the former mother church of Santa Margherita di Belice (Agrigento, Sicily), damaged during the earthquake in 1968 and now re-used as a “Museum of Memory”. It includes a summary of the refl ections that arose during the preliminary surveys and instrumental tests, and reasons that supported the choice of investigations to be performed and methods to be specifi cally applied for the conservation of the architectural heritage. Soil gas prospection of He,222Rn and CO2: Vulcano Porto area, Aeolian Islands, Italy

Abstract In March 1994, soil gases were sampled in the area of Vulcano Porto, on the island of Vulcano, using a grid of about 200 points/km 2 . Analysed gases were CO 2 , He and 222 Rn and, over a smaller area, H 2 S. Some of the samples were also analysed for the isotope composition of CO 2 C. Three anomalous CO 2 degassing areas were identified: Grotta dei Palizzi, the area near the Telephone Exchange, and the area near the beach fumaroles. The behaviour of He and 222 Rn is different in these 3 areas. Kamarina, located in southern Sicily (Italy), was an important Greek colony since its foundation in the sixth century BC. Archaeological excavations, carried out since the twentieth century, uncovered only limited portions of the site so far. Despite the importance of the Greek colony, the presence of remarkable buildings that archaeologists expected to bring to light has not found fully correspondence in the archaeological excavations. The relationship between alluvial dynamics and control parameters such as climate are well known and understood at plurimillennial and pluriannual time-scales. But it is not really the case at multicentennial and multidecennal time-scales compatible with human society settlement time-scales.
