Background. A single‐institution, prospective, randomized open trial was performed to compare ondansetron and granisetron in the prevention of chemotherapyrelated nausea and vomiting. summary Objectives: Adjunctive techniques like DNA image cytometry (DNA-ICM) have been attributed to enhance the diagnostic performance of oral brush biopsies. The aim of the study was an evaluation of brush biopsies, analysed according to morphological criteria and by DNA-ICM vs. histological findings in a blinded prospective trial. The nucleoside 5-fluoro-2-deoxyuridine is a pyrimidine analogue accumulating in proliferative cells. We prospectively evaluated biodistribution of the PET tracer [(18)F]5-fluoro-2-deoxyuridine (FdUrd), its value for imaging malignant tumors, and its correlation to both [(18)F]2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG)-PET findings and histological proliferation indices. Frequency and Indications of Parenteral Nutrition in an Acute Palliative Care Unit

The aim of this study was to estimate the use of parenteral nutrition (PN) in advanced cancer patients enrolled in an acute pain relief and palliative care unit of a comprehensive cancer center and the appropriateness of the criteria to select patients for PN. Fourteen out of 750 patients (1.8%) admitted to an acute palliative care unit were administered PN. Patients were referred from various settings. The mean age was 58 yr (range 37-79), and 9 were males. The mean hospital stay was 7.7 days (range 3-14), and the mean Karnofsky level was 35 (range 10-50). Costimulatory molecules have complementary effects on T-cell activation and their balance may control the development of oral cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the relevance of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4), CD28 and inducible costimulator (ICOS) polymorphisms in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Dynamics of BCR-ABL mRNA expression in first-line therapy of chronic myelogenous leukemia patients with imatinib or interferon alpha/ara-C.

We sought to determine dynamics of BCR-ABL mRNA expression levels in 139 patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in early chronic phase, randomized to receive imatinib (n=69) or interferon (IFN)/Ara-C (n=70). The response was sequentially monitored by cytogenetics from bone marrow metaphases (n=803) and qualitative and quantitative RT-PCR from peripheral blood samples (n=1117). Complete cytogenetic response (CCR) was achieved in 60 (imatinib, 87%) vs 10 patients (IFN/Ara-C, 14%) after a median observation time of 24 months. Diagnosing and staging of pancreatic carcinoma-what is necessary?

The aim of the present prospective observational study was to diagnose and stage pancreatic carcinoma with a minimum of diagnostic procedures. Our experiences in 307 patients with a histologically confirmed pancreatic carcinoma show that for diagnosing pancreatic carcinoma sonography and computed tomography are sufficient in 95% of the cases. The combination of both has a sensitivity equal to that of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP; 96.8 vs. 98.7%; n.s., χ<sup>2</sup> test).
