Evidence for and Against Hypoxia as the Primary Cause of Tumor Aggressiveness

In clinical trials, tumor hypoxia has consistently been associated with tumor aggressiveness. The evidence for an association between hypoxia and metastasis and more rapid tumor progression and death is seen in uterine cervical cancer, and sarcoma of soft tissue. Evidence is building in prostate, vulva, head and neck, and breast cancers. A major question is whether hypoxia precedes tumor aggressiveness or whether aggressive tumors incidentally are also hypoxic.

The waiting time for prostate cancer treatment in Italy: analysis from the PROS-IT CNR Study.

Background Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common neoplasm in male patients. To date, there's no certain indication about the maximum waiting time (WT) acceptable for treatment beginning and the impact on oncological and functional outcomes has not been well established. Methods Data from the National Research Council PCa monitoring multicenter project in Italy (Pros-IT CNR) were prospectively collected and analyzed. Automatic classification of tissues using T1 and T2 relaxation times from prostate MRI: a step toward generation of PET/MR attenuation map

This paper presents a new methodology providing the first step towards generating attenuation maps for PET/MR systems based solely on MR information. The new method segments and classifies the attenuation-differing regions of the patient's pelvis based on acquired T 1 - and T 2 -weighted MR data sets and anatomical-based knowledge by computing the tissue specific T 1 and T 2 relaxation times, using a robust implementation of the weighted fuzzy C-means algorithm and applying a novel process to detect bones.
