The use of zoledronic acid in patients with bone metastases from prostate carcinoma: Effect on analgesic response and bone metabolism biomarkers

2005

Zoledronic acid is a bisphosphonate that is effective in the treatment of complications of metastatic bone disease. We have carried out a perspective study on 24 consecutive patients with prostate cancer metastatic to bone to verify the effect of zoledronic acid on analgesic response and a possible relationship with the levels of bone metabolism biomarkers. Eligibility for this study required prostate cancer patients with metastatic bone disease and pain not controlled by analgesics. Patients were excluded from the study if they were receiving cytotoxic chemotherapy or radiation therapy within three months. Eighteen patients (75%) were considered responder to acid zoledronic, only 6 patient…

Epidemiology, prevention and screening for prostate cancer.

1996

Prostate cancer is a growing social problem. The economical impact is high and is likely to become greater in future years, not only because the number of patients diagnosed with prostatic neoplasias is increasing steadily, but also because of the promotion of screening programmes and the rise in the number of surgical procedures available. It can be concluded that, at the present stage, widespread implementation of screening cannot be recommended. The answer to the question of screening can only be provided by large randomised trials, comparing either screening versus no screening, or early versus delayed treatment in patients in whom early cancer is detected by screening.

Regulation of cell-to-cell communication in non-tumorigenic and malignant human prostate epithelial cells.

2002

BACKGROUND Gap-junction-mediated intercellular communication (GJIC) is required for normal development and tissue homeostasis. However, the role of GJIC in human prostate carcinogenesis and progression remains ill-defined. METHODS The ability of hormones, anti-hormones, and the anti-hypertensive drug, forskolin, to restore GJIC in non-tumorigenic (RWPE-1 and PWR-1E) and malignant (RWPE-2, LNCaP, DU-145) human prostate epithelial cell lines, was examined by Scrape-Loading/Dye Transfer (SL/DT) and Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching (FRAP) methods using an Ultima laser cytometer. RESULTS Results from both assays show that PWR-1E, RWPE-2, LNCaP, and DU-145 cells have weak or absent GJIC…

Deep learning-accelerated T2-weighted imaging of the prostate: Reduction of acquisition time and improvement of image quality.

2021

Abstract Purpose To introduce a novel deep learning (DL) T2-weighted TSE imaging (T2DL) sequence in prostate MRI and investigate its impact on examination time, image quality, diagnostic confidence, and PI-RADS classification compared to standard T2-weighted TSE imaging (T2S). Method Thirty patients who underwent multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) of the prostate due to suspicion of prostatic cancer were included in this retrospective study. Standard sequences were acquired consisting of T1- and T2-weighted imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging as well as the novel T2DL. Axial acquisition time of T2S was 4:37 min compared to 1:38 min of T2DL. Two radiologists independently evaluated all imaging d…

Risk factors, complications and management of lymphocele formation after radical prostatectomy: A mini‐review

2019

Lymphocele formation is the most common adverse event of pelvic lymphadenectomy during radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. Previous studies failed to favor one surgical technique over the other in terms of minimizing its rate. Data on risk factors for its development are still conflicting and warranting further research. In this mini-review, we aimed to scrutinize available evidence on these aspects and outline current achievements in lymphocele prevention approaches.

Association between periodontal disease and prostate cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis

2021

Background Periodontal disease is a chronic infectious disease caused by bacterial infection which may lead to various systematic diseases. Recently, increasing studies have explored the correlation of periodontal disease with the risk of prostate cancer. However, the findings were inconsistent. Hence, this study aims to investigate the association between periodontal disease and the risk of prostate cancer by a meta-analysis. Material and Methods PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane were searched for publications up to July 17, 2020. Cohort and case-control studies evaluating the risk of prostate cancer in patients with periodontal disease were included. A fixed or random-effect model was used to …

Radiomics analysis of 18F-Choline PET/CT in the prediction of disease outcome in high-risk prostate cancer: an explorative study on machine learning …

2021

Objective: The aim of this study was (1) to investigate the application of texture analysis of choline PET/CT images in prostate cancer (PCa) patients and (2) to propose a machine-learning radiomics model able to select PET features predictive of disease progression in PCa patients with a same high-risk class at restaging. Material and methods: Ninety-four high-risk PCa patients who underwent restaging Cho-PET/CT were analyzed. Follow-up data were recorded for a minimum of 13 months after the PET/CT scan. PET images were imported in LIFEx toolbox to extract 51 features from each lesion. A statistical system based on correlation matrix and point-biserial-correlation coefficient has been impl…

Individualized Comprehensive Lifestyle Intervention in Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy with Curative or Palliative Intent: Who Participates?

2015

Objective Knowledge about determinants of participation in lifestyle interventions in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, particularly with palliative intent, remains poor. The objective of the present study was to identify determinants of participating in a 12 month individualized, comprehensive lifestyle intervention, focusing on diet, physical activity, mental stress and smoking cessation, in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy with curative or palliative intent. The secondary objective was to identify participation determinants 4 months into the study. Methods Newly diagnosed cancer patients starting chemotherapy at the cancer center in Kristiansand/Norway (during a 16 month inc…

Zoledronic acid induces a significant decrease of circulating endothelial cells and circulating endothelial precursor cells in the early prostate can…

2012

Purpose: Published data demonstrated that zoledronic acid (ZOL) exhibits antiangiogenetic effects. A promising tool for monitoring antiangiogenic therapies is the measurement of circulating endothelial cells (CECs) and circulating endothelial precursor cells (CEPs) in the peripheral blood of patients. Our aim was to investigate the effects of ZOL on levels of CECs and CEPs in localized prostate cancer. Methods: Ten consecutive patients with a histologic diagnosis of low-risk prostate adenocarcinoma were enrolled and received an intravenous infusion of ZOL at baseline (T0), 28 days (T28) and 56 days (T56). Blood samp…
