Polyester vascular prostheses coated with a cyclodextrin polymer and activated with antibiotics: Cytotoxicity and microbiological evaluation
2008
Abstract Polyester (PET) vascular grafts are used to replace or bypass damaged arteries. To minimize the risk of infection during and after surgical interventions, a PET vascular prosthesis (Polythese®) was functionalized with cyclodextrin polymers (PolyCDs) in order to obtain the controlled release of antibiotics (ABs: ciprofloxacin, vancomcyin and rifampicin). An epithelial cell line (L132) was used to determine the viability of the antibiotics, and human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMEC) were used for cell proliferation by cell counting and cell vitality with Alamar Blue fluorescent dye. Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Enteroccocus sp. were used to determine t…
Short implants (8mm) versus longer implants (≥8mm) with lateral sinus floor augmentation in posterior atrophic maxilla: A meta-analysis of RCT`s in h…
2019
Background One of the greatest challenges that dentists face today is to rehabilitate severe atrophied alveolar ridges in partially and completely edentulous patients with implants. Despite the high survival rate of implants placed next to sinus elevation, this technique presents complications that can be avoided by placing short implants, an option that also presents high survival rates. For this reason, the aim of this study is to compare the survival rate, marginal bone loss and complications associated with short implants (<8 mm) versus longer implants (≥8mm) placed with lateral sinus floor elevation in posterior atrophic maxillae. Material and Methods A literature search was conducted …
Clinical outcomes of patients with diabetes mellitus treated with Absorb bioresorbable vascular scaffolds: a subanalysis of the European Multicentre …
2017
Background Data on the clinical performance of bioresorbable scaffolds in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) are still limited. The present study reported 1-year clinical outcomes associated with the use of everolimus-eluting bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (Absorb BVS; Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, CA) in DM patients. Methods and Results This was a subanalysis from the GHOST-EU (Gauging coronary Healing with biOresorbable Scaffolding plaTforms in Europe) multicenter retrospective registry including patients treated with Absorb BVS between November 2011 and September 2014. In this study, a comparative analysis stratified according to DM was performed. The primary endpoint was target lesi…
Everolimus eluting bioresorbable vascular scaffolds in patients with acute coronary syndromes: Two‐year results from the German‐Austrian ABSORB regis…
2021
Abstract Objectives To identify potential differences in 2‐year outcome between patients who underwent coronary revascularization using bioresorbable vascular scafffolds (BVS) in stable coronary artery disease (CAD) and acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Background Data from randomized trials suggest a significantly higher event rate following coronary revascularization using everolimus‐eluting BVS as compared to new generation drug eluting stents. Whether particular patient subgroups are at increased risk for scaffold thrombosis and target lesion failure (TLF) has not clearly been demonstrated. Methods German‐Austrian ABSORB RegIstRy is a prospective all‐comer multi‐center observational study…
Analysis of the possible benefits of aspheric intraocular lenses: review of the literature.
2008
We reviewed recently published studies that analyzed the visual and optical quality in eyes with different spherical and aspheric intraocular lenses (IOLs). Recent studies focused on visual quality metrics, such as visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, under photopic and mesopic lighting conditions and optical metrics, such as wavefront aberrations, especially spherical aberration. The results in this review were used in an attempt to understand whether there is a visual and/or optical benefit of implanting aspheric IOLs over implanting spherical IOLs.
In vitro optical performance of a new aberration-free intraocular lens
2014
To assess the optical performance of the new EnVista intraocular lens (IOL). Four aspheric IOLs were evaluated; the new EnVista is one amoung them. This IOL, similarly to the Z-Flex HB and the Bi-Flex 1.8 667AB ones, has a neutral aspheric design, whereas the fourth IOL under test (AcrySof IQ IOL SN60WF) presents a negative spherical aberration (SA). The IOL’s aberration patterns were measured in vitro, by setting them up on an optical bench. From these aberration-pattern data, the modulation transfer function (MTF), the average modulation values, and the points spread function (PSF) were calculated. Furthermore, in order to assess the potential optical quality that these IOLs would yield o…
Optical quality comparison between 2 collagen copolymer posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens designs
2014
Purpose To compare the optical quality in vitro of 2 designs of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) for different powers and optical apertures. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods The Nimo TR1504 deflectometry device was used to measure the V4c pIOL, which has a smaller optic diameter, and the V5 pIOL, which has a larger optic diameter. The pIOLs were measured for −3.00 diopters (D), −6.00 D, −9.50 D, and −10.50 D at different optical apertures from 3.00 to 6.00 mm depending on the IOL power and model. The root mean square of higher-order aberrations (RMS HOAs) was analyzed. The Strehl ratio, point-spread functi…
In vitro optical performance of nonrotational symmetric and refractive-diffractive aspheric multifocal intraocular lenses: impact of tilt and decentr…
2012
Purpose To evaluate the optical quality of Acrysof Restor SN6AD1 refractive–diffractive +3.00 D and Lentis Mplus LS-312 nonrotational symmetric +3.00 D aspheric multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) and analyze the effect of tilt and decentration. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, and University of Murcia, Murcia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods An artificial model eye was used to measure wavefront aberrations of both IOL models. The modulation transfer function (MTF) and point-spread function (PSF) were calculated for a 5.0 mm pupil and under 5 situations: centered, 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm decentered, and 2 degrees and 4 degrees tilted. Results The refractive–diffractive IOL had…

GECKILI, ONUR/0000-0002-7852-3915; dayan, suleyman cagatay/0000-0003-3081-9618; Bilhan, Hakan/0000-0003-1787-3003 WOS:000460131200015 PubMed ID: 30818319 Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicians' experience on maintaining the primary stability of implants with aggressive threads belonging to a novel dental implant system. Material and Methods: Three hundred implants with aggressive threads were inserted in fresh bovine ribs mimicking Type IV bone by five clinicians which were classified according to their previous experience of total number of implant insertion. An independent examiner measured the primary stability of all implants after insertion by using resonan…
Assessing osseointegration of metallic implants with boronized surface treatment
2020
Background Modification of endosteal implants through surface treatments have been investigated to improve osseointegration. Boronization has demonstrated favorable mechanical properties, but limited studies have assessed translational, in vivo outcomes. This study investigated the effect of implant surface boronization on bone healing. Material and Methods Two implant surface roughness profiles (acid etched, machined) in CP titanium (type II) alloy implants were boronized by solid-state diffusion until 10-15µm boron coating was achieved. The surface-treated implants were placed bilaterally into 5 adult sheep ilia for three and six weeks. Four implant groups were tested: boronized machined …
