Marginal adaptation of three-unit interim restorations fabricated by the CAD-CA systems and the direct method before and after thermocycling
2020
Background Limited information is available regarding the marginal adaptation of three-unit interim restorations fabricated by different techniques from different materials. Also, the efficacy of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) systems for their fabrication is still questionable. This study aimed to assess the marginal adaptation of three-unit interim restorations fabricated by the CAD-CAM systems and the direct method from different materials before and after thermocycling. Material and Methods A sound mandibular second premolar and a second molar were prepared for a three-unit all-ceramic restoration. Metal dies were fabricated to simulate a case of mandibular…
Immediate prosthesis over implants retained using abutments with flexible screws: A preliminary study
2017
Background Immediate loading protocols for the rehabilitation of edentulous or partially edentulous patients have become very popular, due to the conveniences they afford in comparison with conventional loading techniques. Material and Methods A preliminary study was carried out with 8 patients subjected to dental implant treatment with an immediate loading protocol involving a novel system of abutments with flexible screws. Implant survival was analyzed, together with marginal bone loss and patient and dentist satisfaction. Results A total of 35 implants were subjected to immediate loading using the abutments with flexible screws. The mean patient and dentist satisfaction score was 9.1 and…
Proximal contact alterations between implant-supported restorations and adjacent teeth in the posterior region: A 3-month prospective study
2021
Background Interproximal contact loss (ICL) is a multifactorial implant complication. The aims of this prospective clinical study were to evaluate proximal contact alterations between implant-supported fixed prostheses (IFPs) and adjacent teeth and to identify potential contributing factors. Material and Methods This study was conducted from April to September 2019 at the Department of Prosthodontics. Forty-three patients (23 females and 20 males, age range 31-70) treated with 43 posterior IFPs were recruited for this study. All proximal contacts (64) were checked visually and radiographically. Proximal contact tightness (PCT) was clinically evaluated using dental floss and measured during …
Marginal bone loss around cement and screw-retained fixed implant prosthesis
2018
Background Implant-supported fixed restorations are considered as the standard treatment for replacement of missing teeth. These can be either screw or cement retained. The success or failure of implant restorations depend upon amount of marginal bone loss (MBL). The present study is to determine the MBL around cement and screw-retained implant prosthesis and to determine various predictors of the MBL. Material and Methods A retrospective charts review was conducted at the dental clinics, Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi from February 2017 to June 2017 in which 104 implants restorations were assessed using periapical radiographs. MBL was calculated at baseline and at 12 months and the …
Immediate placement of single implant simultaneously with immediate loading in a fresh socket associated to periapical infection: a clinical case rep…
2015
Early restoration of the masticatory function, phonatory and aesthetics is some of the current goals of the therapy based on endosseous implants. Facing the classic protocols of implant insertion, which recommend a period of several months between extraction and implant placement, alternatives have been developed that demonstrate that immediate implant placement after tooth extraction permits adequate osseointegration, even in those cases where there is a periapical disease. The immediate restoration of implants after placement is a possibility where aesthetic requirements are high. This article presents a case with immediate implant placement and immediate loading of a first upper premolar…
The all-on-four treatment concept: Systematic review
2017
Objectives To systematically review the literature on the "all-on-four" treatment concept regarding its indications, surgical procedures, prosthetic protocols and technical and biological complications after at least three years in function. Study design The three major electronic databases were screened: MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library of the Cochrane Collaboration (CENTRAL). In addition, electronic screening was made of the 'grey literature' using the System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe - Open Grey, covering the period from January 2005 up to and including April 2016. Results A total of 728 articles were obtained from the initial screening process. O…
Quality of life in irradiated patients with head and neck cancer: A preliminary study about the impact of prosthetic rehabilitation
2021
Background Oral quality of life is of great importance in head and neck cancer, where each patient combines functional, social and esthetic needs. Our study aimed to evaluate the influence of prosthetic and/or maxillofacial rehabilitation on patients’ perceived oral quality of life. Material and Methods The General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) was used in 28 patients with head and neck cancer who had undergone radiotherapy, recruited at La Timone University Hospital, Marseille, France, and who required prosthetic rehabilitation. The questionnaire was completed at three timepoints in the study: before insertion of the prosthesis (T0), then one week (T1) and three months after inserti…
The impact of oral rehabilitation with implants in nutrition and quality of life: A questionnaire-based survey on self-perception
2019
Background The association between tooth loss and masticatory problems may influence on food choices and consequently impact nutrition and quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate impact of oral rehabilitation with implants in nutrition and quality of life. Material and Methods A prospective study was performed. The Questionnaire for Healthy Habits (QHH) and the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) tools were used to assess nutrition and oral health status, respectively. Oral implants were placed and the adjacent the bone was radiographically assessed. The mean outcomes of the QHH between pre- and post-rehabilitation periods were assessed with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test. The OHIP…
Four-year outcomes of full-arch fixed dental prostheses using CAD/CAM frameworks : a retrospective review of 15 cases
2018
The aim of this report is to analyze the clinical performance of 20 full-arch implant-supported titanium frameworks using CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing) technology. One hundred and four implants were placed in 15 patients using a one-stage protocol. After planning the location of all implants via 3-dimensional software (NobleClinician), 4-8 implants were placed in each edentulous arch based on anatomical measurements. Twenty edentulous arches were treated with full arch implant-supported fixed dental prostheses utilizing CAD/CAM milled titanium frameworks . All patients were followed up for 48±4 months. Clinical performance of the implants and restorations …
In vitro assessment of the antifungal effects of neem powder added to polymethyl methacrylate denture base material
2018
Background Denture with antimicrobial activities is desirable to prevent Candida albican adhesion subsequently decreasing the susceptibility of denture stomatitis incidence. Azadirachta Indica, commonly known as Neem powder has antimicrobial effect but the effect of its addition to acrylic denture base on C. albicans adhesion has not been investigated. The aim of this study was determine whether adding neem powder to acrylic denture base materials could reduce Candida albicansadhesion. Material and methods One hundred and twenty acrylic resin denture specimens were fabricated and divided into heat-polymerized (n=60) and auto-polymerized (n=60) groups. Each group was further divided into 6 g…
