128 Development of a job-exposure matrix (JEM) to describe pesticide exposure in Spanish workers (1996–2005)

2013

Objectives Pesticides are intensively used in Spain in a wide range of economic activities such as agriculture, farming, wood treatments or pest control, reaching in 2005 a consumption of more than 100,000 ton/year. Exposure to these substances has been proven to have negative effects on human health. However, there is little information available regarding the levels and frequency of exposure for workers, or the job titles associated with the worst exposure indicators. This study aimed to collect the available information on occupational pesticide exposure in Spain as a job-exposure matrix (JEM). Methods The work was carried out in the context of MatEmESp Project, which aims to build a Spa…

Investor Protection in Times of Crisis of Financial Institutions in Spain in Light of EU Regulations

2016

The objective of this paper is to explore selected strategies of countering the financial crisis in Spain, with a special focus on the issue of investor protection. I will attempt to highlight good solutions and the most significant mistakes made in the struggle to tackle the crisis, based on comments provided by experts in the field - both scholars and practitioners. Owing to the great complexity of the subject, in this work I focus on aspects connected with the restructuring of Spanish banking institutions and with the deposit guarantee system, and I discuss the efforts to overcome the financial crisis in Spain within the context of new challenges to public law (especially in light of the…

Ultraviolet radiation protection by a beach umbrella.

2010

A beach umbrella intercepts all direct UV irradiance, but only part of the diffuse component. Using a simple sky view factor model, we have determined the fraction of the hemispheric diffuse irradiance that is not intercepted by the umbrella. Assuming a sensor at the surface and close to the center of the umbrella, isotropic diffuse irradiance and for an umbrella of 80 cm radius and 100 cm high, our results show that approximately 34% of the incident horizontal irradiance is not intercepted by the umbrella. These results agree with irradiance measurements conducted with and without the umbrella. The model is next extended to examine receipt of UV radiation by a human figure in a vertical po…

Security of information in IT systems

2005

The aim of the paper is to increase human awareness of the dangers connected with social engineering methods of obtaining information. The article demonstrates psychological and sociological methods of influencing people used in the attacks on IT systems. Little known techniques are presented about one of the greater threats that is electromagnetic emission or corona effect. Moreover, the work shows methods of protecting against this type of dangers. Also, in the paper one can find information on devices made according to the TEMPEST technology. The article not only discusses the methods of gathering information, but also instructs how to protect against its out-of-control loss.

Integrated reporting: The mediating role of the board of directors and investor protection on managerial discretion in munificent environments

2018

Is there a relationship between managerial discretion in munificent environments and the propensity to disclose an integrated reporting? Is this relationship contingent on the board of directors and investor protection? For an international sample for 2006–2014, this paper supports the assertion that managers are more able to extract superior perquisites when the level of accumulated cash holding is higher; that is, in munificent contexts. Because of the greater managerial discretion in these contexts, managers show a lower incentive to disclose voluntary information through an integrated report, which decreases the firm's transparency. Nonetheless, the board of directors and the level of i…

The Multi-Fibre Arrangement—A hydra of protectionism?

1981

Talks are at present in progress in Geneva among 51 industrialised and developing countries on a renewal of the Multi-Fibre Arrangement (MFA) which expires at the end of 1981. The preliminaries of the negotiations have already revealed the existence of massive conflicts of interest not only between the industrialised countries on the one hand and the developing countries on the other but also within the two groups. The talks are moreover overshadowed by threats from individual industrialised countries to resort to unilateral protectionist measures unless a result satisfactory to them is achieved. This situation is the more explosive as the outcome of the negotiations is regarded worldwide a…

Endogenous Agents That Contribute to Generate or Prevent Ischemic Damage

2012

From single to multicellular organisms, protective mechanisms have evolved against endogenous and exogenous noxious stimuli. Over the past decades numerous signaling pathways by which the brain senses and reacts to such insults as neurotoxins, substrate deprivation and inflammation have been discovered. Research on preconditioning is aimed at understanding endogenous neuroprotection to boost it or to supplement its effectors therapeutically once damage to the brain has occurred, such as after stroke or brain trauma. Another goal of establishing preconditioning protocols is to induce endogenous neuroprotection in anticipation of incipient brain damage. Currently several endogenous neuroprote…
