Innovative Industrial Technologies for Preventive Anti-Graffiti Coating
2017
Graffiti is the main issue in terms of acts of vandalism with public transport. Hardly any suburban train, commuter train or goods train, hardly any engineering building, station or noise barrier wall escape graffiti spraying. This means enormous expenses every year which one would rather use to the benefit of its customers. Furthermore, the temporary and permanent anti-graffiti protection systems used up to now do not ensure adequate graffiti protection. The costs for the application of graffiti protection and/or graffiti removal to a large part depend on the circumstances of the individual case in question, i.e. on the size of the surface, the type and size of the ground, the accessibilit…
Heat Stress Induces Extended Plateau of Hsp70 Accumulation - A Possible Cytoprotection Mechanism in Hepatic Cells
2015
The relevance of heat preconditioning resides in its ability to protect cells from different kinds of injury by induction of heat shock proteins, a process in which the intensity of heat stress (HS) and duration of subsequent recovery are vital. This study evaluates the effects of moderate HS (45 min/43°C) and the time-dependent changes during recovery period of HSP70, Bcl-2 and p53 gene and protein expression in HepG2 cells. We also evaluated the effects of 0.4 mM aspirin (ASA) as a potential pharmacological co-inducer of HSP, both alone and in a combination with HS (ASA + HS). HS alone and ASA + HS caused a major up-regulation of HSP70 mRNA in the first 2 h, while HSP70 protein increased …

Report of the COSPAR Mars special regions colloquium
2010
International audience; In this paper we present the findings of a COSPAR Mars Special Regions Colloquium held in Rome in 2007. We review and discuss the definition of Mars Special Regions, the physical parameters used to define Mars Special Regions, and physical features on Mars that can be interpreted as Mars Special Regions. We conclude that any region experiencing temperatures > -25 degrees C for a few hours a year and a water activity > 0.5 can potentially allow the replication of terrestrial microorganisms. Physical features on Mars that can be interpreted as meeting these conditions constitute a Mars Special Region. Based on current knowledge of the martian environment and the conser…
Vegetation fire emissions and their impact on air pollution and climate
2009
Gaseous and particulate emissions from vegetation fires substantially modify the atmospheric chemical composition, degrade air quality and can alter weather and climate. The impact of vegetation fire emissions on air pollution and climate has been recognised in the late 1970s. The application of satellite data for fire-related studies in the beginning of the 21th century represented a major break through in our understanding of the global importance of fires. Today the location and extent of vegetation fires, burned area and emissions released from fires are determined from satellite products even though many uncertainties persist. Numerous dedicated experimental and modeling studies contri…
How effective are the vegetated surfaces for the CO2 sequestration? Analyzing parameters and methods
2021
Human activities are severe sources of greenhouse gases and, particularly, of CO 2 . This trend, according with the highly demanding criteria released by the international institutions, must be suitably cut, in order of turning the pollutant emissions within limits that will guarantee a sustainable and environmentally safe development of the human species. Apart the measures that are since long time usually implemented in the technological systems, other interventions should be properly adopted in supporting the sustainability of the anthropic activities. These actions mainly apply to the so-called bioclimatic and passive measures and, particularly, could usefully refer to the plantation of…
The security of mobile business applications based on mCRM
2020
A development of mobile technologies, and their common use in business, creates new challenges for people dealing with data security in the organization. This paper explores the types and nature of threats to the enterprise that result from the widespread use of business applications on smartphones (e.g. mobile CRM). The analysis has been focused on smartphones and tablets running on the Android operating system. We used STRIDE - a threat modeling technique commonly used to detect vulnerabilities in software security. We propose its modification to better design and implement solutions for the security of mobile devices. We also used the Data Flow Diagram and the Attack Tree concept to anal…
Protectionism through legislative layering: Implications for auditors and investors
2021
AbstractProtectionism is on the rise. Although it tends to be associated with tariffs on imports, governments are increasingly applying other mechanisms to influence international business. Import substitution initiatives have been used to replace purchases from foreign producers with local alternatives. Russia implemented import substitution through legislative layering where layers of regulation created requirements targeting different industries and companies. Following sanctions imposed in 2014 on Russia, the government responded with additional import substitution efforts. We are interested in effects of such measures on the Big 4, global professional service firms, and the choice of a…
SVET, AFM and AES study of pitting corrosion initiated on MnS inclusions by microinjection
2003
As pitting is a random phenomenon, it is difficult to predict where a pit will appear on the surface and consequently the use of local probes is rendered difficult. In this work, a new method to study pitting corrosion on a MnS inclusion on 316L stainless steel is proposed. It consists in modifying locally the chemistry in its vicinity by injecting with a microcapillary an aggressive solution of NaCl, H2SO4 or HCl. Once a pit appears, scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) is used to follow the current fluctuations over and around the pit when the metal is polarized at a passive potential. In another series of experiments the effect of local activation of MnS inclusion was studied ex…
Using continuous user authentication to detect masqueraders
2003
Nowadays computer and network intrusions have become more common and more complicated, challenging the intrusion detection systems. Also, network traffic has been constantly increasing. As a consequence, the amount of data to be processed by an intrusion detection system has been growing, making it difficult to efficiently detect intrusions online. Proposes an approach for continuous user authentication based on the user’s behaviour, aiming at development of an efficient and portable anomaly intrusion detection system. A prototype of a host‐based intrusion detection system was built. It detects masqueraders by comparing the current user behaviour with his/her stored behavioural model. The m…
