Guanosine Protects Glial Cells Against 6-Hydroxydopamine Toxicity

2014

Increasing body of evidence indicates that neuron-neuroglia interaction may play a key role in determining the progression of neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s disease (PD), a chronic pathological condition characterized by selective loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra. We have previously reported that guanosine (GUO) antagonizes MPP+-induced cytotoxicity in neuroblastoma cells and exerts neuroprotective effects against 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) and beta-amyloid-induced apoptosis of SH-SY5Y cells. In the present study we demonstrate that GUO protected C6 glioma cells, taken as a model system for astrocytes, from 6-OHDA-induced neurotoxicity. We show tha…

Experimental Hyperthermia during Cardiac Arrest and CPR Is Associated with Severe Spontaneous Hypothermia in Mice

2012

Background: Since genetically engineered mice are becoming more and more available, these animals become of high interest to study physiologic and pathophysiologic pathways of brain ischemia. The aim of this study was to examine body temperature (Tb), physical activity variation and neurohistopathology in mice exposed to normothermic and hyperthermic cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CA/CPR). Methods: Male C57Bl/6 mice weighing 22 - 27 g were implanted intraperitoneally with a radio telemeter and subjected to 10 min cardiac arrest followed by cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Normothermia (37.5°C) or hyperthermia (39.0°C) was induced by controlling pericranial temperature durin…

The neuroprotective actions of corticotropin releasing hormone

2005

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) modulates the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and has a key role in mediating neuroendocrine effects that occur in response to stressful stimuli. Disruption of the CRH system however has been shown to be closely associated with the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and these observations prompted an investigation into the potential neuroprotective effects of the hormone. In addition to its regulatory affects on the molecular processes that underlie AD i.e., amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing and potentially tau phosphorylation, evidence is provided that the neuroprotective effects of CRH are mediated by a number…

Immigrati e diritti sociali: parità di trattamento e tutela multilivello

2017

Environmental impact of antifouling technologies: state of art and perspectives

2001

1. Marine fouling affects most man-made surfaces temporarily or permanently immersed in the sea, resulting in significant (or substantial) economic costs. Intense research is aimed at preventing or reducing fouling. 2. The most widespread solution to avoid fouling formation is to make surfaces unsuitable for settlers, coating them with antifouling (AF) paints containing toxic compounds. Most AF agents (e.g. tributyltin, (TBT)) have undesirable effects on non-target species, including commercially important organisms. 3. To date, the use of TBT in AF paints has been restricted (but not prohibited) in a number of countries and new biocides are in use. 4. The environmental problems posed to ma…

Methylprednisolone neutralizes the beneficial effects of erythropoietin in experimental spinal cord injury

2005

Inflammation plays a major pathological role in spinal cord injury (SCI). Although antiinflammatory treatment using the glucocorticoid methyprednisolone sodium succinate (MPSS) improved outcomes in several multicenter clinical trials, additional clinical experience suggests that MPSS is only modestly beneficial in SCI and poses a risk for serious complications. Recent work has shown that erythropoietin (EPO) moderates CNS tissue injury, in part by reducing inflammation, limiting neuronal apoptosis, and restoring vascular autoregulation. We determined whether EPO and MPSS act synergistically in SCI. Using a rat model of contusive SCI, we compared the effects of EPO [500-5,000 units/kg of bod…
