The Anti Nuclear Litany
2012
Can nuclear energy become a viable alternative to fossil fuels? Almost all of French electricity is generated in nuclear plants, as is half of the electricity in Ukraine, Sweden and Belgium, a third in Finland and South Korea and a fifth in many other countries, among them Spain, Germany, the UK and the USA.
The lipid lowering drug lovastatin protects against doxorubicin-induced hepatotoxicity.
2012
Liver is the main detoxifying organ and therefore the target of high concentrations of genotoxic compounds, such as environmental carcinogens and anticancer drugs. Here, we investigated the usefulness of lovastatin, which is nowadays widely used for lipid lowering purpose, as a hepatoprotective drug following the administration of the anthracycline derivative doxorubicin in vivo. To this end, BALB/c mice were exposed to either a single high dose or three consecutive low doses of doxorubicin. Acute and subacute hepatotoxicities were analyzed with or without lovastatin co-treatment. Lovastatin protected the liver against doxorubicin-induced acute pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic stress respo…
The Substitutability of Unfair Contract Terms in Credit Agreements Denominated and Indexed to Foreign Currencies
2020
This contribution deals with the problem of the capacity of the court to replace the unfair term in the loan agreements with a supplementary provision of national law. The main aim of the contribution is to confirm the thesis, that the court is not entitled to change the condition for which it states that it is unfair despite the conscious and fixed will of the consumer himself. We have used formal – dogmatic approach for this text.
Economic crisis and child maltreatment in Spain: the consequences of the recession in the child protection system
2021
Purpose This study aims to examine the consequences of the last great recession on the child protection system (CPS) in Spain, to estimate whether there is any kind of relationship between the conditions of socio-economic crisis and its protective activity. Design/methodology/approach Data on child protection legal measures issued by the CPS and socio-economic data from 8 of the 17 regions of the country were cross-checked. Using the chi-square test, it was possible to determine the significance and intensity of the relationship between the different variables in each of the regions of the study. Findings During the crisis, the number of recorded cases fell most sharply in those regions wi…
Adolescentes del África Occidental: motivaciones y reflexiones del proceso migratorio. Un análisis comparado
2021
Iron‐Catalyzed Cross‐Couplings in the Synthesis of Pharmaceuticals: In Pursuit of Sustainability
2018
The scarcity of precious metals has led to the development of sustainable strategies for metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The establishment of new catalytic methods using iron is attractive owing to the low cost, abundance, ready availability, and very low toxicity of iron. In the last few years, sustainable methods for iron-catalyzed cross-couplings have entered the critical area of pharmaceutical research. Most notably, iron is one of the very few metals that have been successfully field-tested as highly effective base-metal catalysts in practical, kilogram-scale industrial cross-couplings. In this Minireview, we critically discuss the strategic benefits of using iron catalysts a…
Chemoprotective effect of carotenoids from Lycium barbarum L. on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells treated with beauvericin
2020
Goji berry has recently been introduced in Mediterranean diet and its consumption is increasing. This study aims to determine cytoprotection of lutein (LUT), zeaxanthin (ZEAX) and goji berry extract (GBE) rich in carotenoids against Beauvericin (BEA)-induced cytotoxicity on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. Both carotenoids and GBE showed cytoprotective effects. Cytoprotection was evaluated by simultaneous combination of the two xanthophylls LUT and ZEAX with BEA, as well as using pre-treatment assays. The highest protective effect occurred in 16%, 24% and 12% respectively for LUT, ZEAX and LUT + ZEAX incubating simultaneously with BEA, while by pre-treatment assay LUT showed a cytoprotection ef…
Cytoprotective effects of carotenoids-rich extract from Lycium barbarum L. on the beauvericin-induced cytotoxicity on Caco-2 cells.
2019
Abstract In this work, the cytotoxicity of Beauvericin (BEA), lutein (LUT), zeaxanthin (ZEAX) and goji berries extract (GBE) rich in carotenoids, was investigated, as well as cytoprotective effects of these carotenoids against BEA induced-cytotoxicity on Caco-2 cells. Cytotoxicity was carried out using MTT and protein content (PC) assays during 24 and 48 h of exposure. Only BEA showed cytotoxic effect obtaining a reduction in cell proliferation range from 6.5 to 92.8%. Simultaneous combination of LUT and ZEAX with BEA slightly increased cell proliferation compared to BEA tested alone. LUT, ZEAX and GBE showed cytoprotective effects against cytotoxicity induced by BEA on Caco-2 cells. Pre-tr…
Oestradiol or genistein rescues neurons from amyloid beta-induced cell death by inhibiting activation of p38.
2007
Oestrogenic compounds have been postulated as neuroprotective agents. This prompted us to investigate their mechanism action in neurons in primary culture. Cells were pretreated with physiological concentrations of 17-beta estradiol (0.2 nm) or with nutritionally relevant concentrations of genistein (0.5 microm), and 48 h later treated with 5 microm of amyloid beta (Abeta) for 24 h. We found that Abeta increased oxidative stress, measured as peroxide levels or oxidized glutathione/reduced glutathione ratio, which in turn, caused phosphorylation of p38 MAP kinase. Amyloid beta subsequently induced neuronal death. Inhibiting the MAP kinase pathway prevented cell death, confirming the role of …
Neuroprotection elicited by P2Y13 receptors against genotoxic stress by inducing DUSP2 expression and MAPK signaling recovery.
2014
AbstractNucleotides activating P2Y13 receptors display neuroprotective actions against different apoptotic stimuli in cerebellar granule neurons. In the present study, P2Y13 neuroprotection was analyzed in conditions of genotoxic stress. Exposure to cisplatin and UV radiation induced caspase-3-dependent apoptotic cell death, and p38 MAPK signaling de-regulation. Pre-treatment with P2Y13 nucleotide agonist, 2methyl-thio-ADP (2MeSADP), restored granule neuron survival and prevented p38 long-lasting activation induced by cytotoxic treatments. Microarray gene expression analysis in 2MeSADP-stimulated cells revealed over-representation of genes related to protein phosphatase activity. Among them…
