The estimation of steatosis in a liver graft is mandatory prior to liver transplantation, as the risk of graft failure increases with the level of infiltrated fat. Cowden's syndrome (CS), also known as multiple hamartoma syndrome, is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis first described in 1963. It has a high penetrance in both sexes and variable phenotypes. Its origin is a PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homologue) gene mutation and affects multiple organs of endodermal, ectodermal, and mesodermal origin, resulting in the development of hamartomatous mucocutaneus lesions and an increased risk for malignancies in breast, thyroid, endometrium, kidney, colon, rectum, among other organs. Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) has long been considered a congenital disorder that occurs due to environmental alterations during gestation. Recently, several mutated genes have been discovered that are thought to be responsible for the malformations observed in ToF. These genetic mutations, which are microdeletions, are sporadic and are frequently also present in trisomy 21 patients. The ToF malformations can be lethal, but for the last 50 years, surgical repairs that place an artificial patch to repair the four features of ToF have improved the survival of patients with ToF. Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mineral density and/or poor bone microarchitecture leading to an increased risk of fractures. The skeletal alterations in osteoporosis are a consequence of a relative deficit of bone formation compared to bone resorption. Osteoporosis therapies have mostly relied on antiresorptive drugs. An alternative therapeutic approach for osteoporosis is currently available, based on the intermittent administration of parathyroid hormone (PTH). In recent years, there have been conclusive findings in the field of maintaining homeostasis following trauma, bleeding, nutritional and metabolic disturbances and infections. These findings can help save the lives of an increasing number of injured and sick by enlarging the therapeutic possibilities which have previously been unimaginable. This development has been made possible by the good cooperation of both basic research and clinical staff whose common aim was to achieve advances in this field of intensive care. The aim of the present study is to make a relevant theoretical and practical contribution to the widening possibilities and necessities in this field.

Transient receptor potential-vanilloid type-1 (TRPV1) is a ligand-gated cation channel with preference for divalent cations, especially Ca(2+) (sequence of conductances: Ca(2+)Mg(2+)Na(+) approximately/= K(+) approximately/= Cs(+)). In the present study, the two-electrode voltage-clamp technique was used on oocytes of Xenopus laevis expressing TRPV1 to evaluate whether human TRPV1 also conducts protons. In medium devoid of K(+), Na(+), Mg(2+), and Ca(2+), capsaicin 1 microM induced a significant inward current (62% of the current in physiological medium). Cholinesterase inhibitors are the only approved drug treatment for patients with mild to moderately severe Alzheimer's disease. Interestingly, the clinical potency of these drugs does not correlate well with their activity as cholinesterase inhibitors, nor is their action as short lived as would be expected from purely symptomatic treatment.
